Mike, I frequently visit Kuala Lumpur... In my estimation, these days, more than 80% of Muslim women in Malaysia wear head covering (hijab/jilbab)... I am 100% sure that in 1961, 99.99% of Muslim women in Malaysia did NOT wear any head covering (hijab/jilbab).
They do in the deeper part of Malaysia, it's not too-too popular with younger people but 30s and above age woman have started wearing scarfs first, remember, the city is always different than the village everywhere, the 60s til 70s are still in the growing stage, it's in the 80s that the hijab movement grew stronger, with influences from outsiders and films, the continuing war of America and Middle East since the 80s also is a huge factor is in this movement In fact between the 60s til the 80s Malaysia films, you can see the changes in narrative, in the 80s, any sort of aggressive religious teaching is frowned upon thus it reflects in the films of their time, then it started becoming acceptable as times goes on
I'm a cinematographer. I was traveling from Japan to Europe by freighter. The freighter called on Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, where I took movies which were shown on Dutch television.
Terima kasih.. thank you in Malay! Guess you understand it. The clip is so amazing. You have kept it so well and thanks for sharing. I was born in 1969, Kuala Lumpur, although the clip was before me, most of the scenes look so familiar to me and it brings me such a wonderful feeling, I love my homeland. How i hope there will be a Time Machine that can bring me back to 1961, maybe I can appear in front of your camera... Haha! You have really enjoyed your life! Again, thanks for sharing.
Brings back so many happy memories of my childhood growing up in K.L. in those times (1957-1970.) I quickly identified every location that you filmed. Many thanks for the nostalgia.

Thank you Michael Rogge for uploading this vintage video footage of KL in 1961. That was 14 years before I was born. During my stay in London in the 1981-1983 my family went for Holidays in Amsterdam. We loved the Holland cheese, windmill scenery and those miniature cities.
Thanks a lot sir for sharing this classical piece of video. Post modern kuala lumpur developed a lot, but seeing this video makes me wonder how modest and simple was life back then....
I was born in 1967. The earliest I can remember watching on TV was the transfer of Kuala Lumpur from Selangor to Fed Gov. I watched on TV the then Sultan signing the instrument of transfer. I remember asking my father why the sultan was emotional and teary eyes. My father told me the Sultan was emotional as he was renouncing his sovereignty over KL.

Lovely to see KL looking so clean and attractive, and so wholesome. My parents were in Malaya, pre-WW2 and again for a few years after it, so I like to imagine I'm seeing at least something a little like the scenes they knew. Your clips of the Far East are a priceless record of how things used to be.
MichaelRogge I'll follow up on your helpful suggestion - thank you. I've read virtually all that Somerset Maugham wrote by way of short stories set in the Far East - they too provide, in their way, an insight into life out there, more especially for the Europeans.
I wonder how it feels to be a traveller who travelled around the world back in the day without the advanced technology like we have now. The innocence of the people, the laid-back atmosphere, the untouched scenery... This was the era of my grandparents, my dad was born one year after this footage was taken. This is something that my old folks will reminisce dearly. This will take them wayyyy back into their younger days. We Malaysians will treasure this masterpiece for years to come. Thank you Sir. :)
It's a humbling experience watching these videos. You're there today, but you don't think about the people who walked and stood at the same place before years ago. These glimpses of the past reminds you of that, and puts the present and time in perspective.
oh man, what memorable clips, malays moving around in tradisional costume, lot of bicycles and tricycles, this clips never being shown at any local tv stations beside when celebrating indipendent day...sorry my english is not quite good, but thanks all your vid sir, thanks so much from my heart.
Mr Rogge, you captured reality way back then in all its glory and grace. What a simple and beautiful way of living! It seems as though you made time travelling possible!!
Thank you so much for the video, Kuala Lumpur now have change so much and becoming one of the most busy city in the world. If you (admin) still alive, please stay healthy and stay safe.
That beautiful building is Sultan Abdul Samad... I love to watch this building especially at night... This place is so romantic n fill with colorful light everywhere...
That was how the original architect envisaged the space around the railway station. Plenty of greenery and walkways. Sadly today tall buildings impinge on the station making it less grandiose.
Yes That's how I remember KL of old. Life was slower and simpler. With all the traffic, building construction, energy consumption, removal of vegetation, I observe the average temperature of KL has risen by at 6 degC or so in the last 40 years.
man at 0:20 is where i lived and its great to see my own town back in the day, to the people of other country at 0:20 at the bottom right corner is now a light railway train station today, i usually pass by the station to get the train to my school every morning :)
It reminds me of my childhood days. KL at that period of history wasn't a bad place to grow up in. People, generally, were friendly and interact easily and cordially. I'd say there's harmony within diversity. Of course, less crowded, less traffic and a pretty safe environment for people to move about as you can see in the video. Thank you for posting this old gem.
Thank you so much for sharing this piece of historic coverage of our cultural diversity. The videos were honest, colourless, raceless coverage of Malaysia when few Malaysian failed to do so. They are so priceless.Very appreciate it.
Taman Tun township was not opened in 1961. It was opened in 1977. I know this because I'm living here since 1977 till now. Jalan abang haji openg was the 1st phase and the price my father purchased it that time was RM45,000.00 during 1981-1987 my father was stationed overseas London and Singapore. The property was rented out that time. Came back from overseas in 1988 and lived here since.

I spent four years in K.L. with my job and have a million happy memories. I rented an apartment at Desa Kudalari and worked in UBN Tower, at the corner of Jalan P.Ramlee. Spent many an evening at a little restaurant on Jalan Heng Lakir in China town. Wonderful days, wonderful people and wonderful food.
