1970's I was just a small boy living in Kuala Terengganu town...still remember the post office, the duyong island, seberang takir, such a nostalgic view...wish could turn back the time...

I have to differ with you on this. Photos from the 1960s and early 1970s may look nostalgic and lovely to you today but during those years, there was widespread poverty across the land. Majority of the people earned low incomes as the economy was heavily dependent on agriculture, rubber and tin mining with very little industries. Many towns had primitive sewage disposal system and human waste was collected from bucket latrines at the back of houses and shops. Infectious diseases like tuberculosis and cholera were rampant, killing thousands annually. Most people grew their own vegetables, fruits and reared livestock in their gardens to supplement their meagre diet. If you were a student in those days, you could expect to receive corporal punishments like caning or being slapped by the teachers over trivial offences. If you asked me whether I would want to go back to those days, it will be a resounding NO from me.

They are the ones building , your skyscrapers , your roads , your apartments , office blocks , cleaning your roads and taking out your rubbish . They are also in your factories providing cheap labour and learning skills and services faster then our lazy locals , some of whom look for a free ride from government handouts . In another thirty years most of the skilled labour will be from them and the local lads have to learn from them . They work hard through much pain , sorrow and sacrifice . They are a human being just like you . People in general want to feel big and important ... but forget we are all just a flicker in the Universe and we are all struggling to come to terms with these truths . My parent's childhood years. What I noticed most is their skin color, dulu semua ramai main panas. Keluar rumah. Panas panas pun rilek je. Sekarang lama kelamaan kulit melayu makin putih and terang. As if the celluloid had never been passed through the projector more than 5 times. Pic very crisp and clean. I suspect, this is a personal collection of an enthusiast. Most shots are handheld. Sharp focusing was not prioritised. But as an archive, this is a superb. The guy who shot this footage knew these shots will be a historic record.

Coming back from school I remember the times I had in 1970.The World Cup finals in Mexico with Pele,Gordon Banks,Riveira,Bobby Charlton and Beckenbauer.Then those TV series Time Tunnel,Night Gallery,Banana Split,Monster from Outer Space,Ultra Man(in English) and those Cowboy movies shown on Saturday afternoon. And there was the 1970 Thomas Cup finals which was beamed live featuring Malaysia and the Asian Games at Bangkok.

Yes those were the days in circa 1970.RTM only had two channels then and transmission started only at 6.00 p.m in the evening during the week days.But on Saturday and Sunday TV transmission started much earlier at 3.00 p.m.Popular TV programmes then were Ultraman,Banasplit,Monster from Outerspace,Night Gallery,the Black and White Minstrel Show,Man from UNCLE and many more.There was even a live telecast of the 1970 Thomas Cup final matches. Yes that was 1970 nearly half a century ago.We did not have many TV stations such as Astro then.The cinema then was another entertainment outlet but tickets were very cheap for Third Class.

🥳🍻🎉 Reminiscing ......memory lane for the seniors: * Recycled Good old days * 😄😁😃😜🤣 "Rose Chan was our favourite performer. Wong Peng Soon was our favourite badminton player. We reared Siamese fighting fishes, the seller was our idol. Driving license renewal was by pasting an additional slip at the back of a small red booklet. Susu lembu was house delivered by our big friendly and strong Mr KK Singh, on his bicycle is a stainless steel container. And the container cap served as a funnel. Kacang puteh man came peddling, walking and balancing on his head 6 compartments of different types of kacang and muruku ... and we barter our old exercise books for a paper cone of kacang puteh. F&N orange was served in wooden crates and displayed on tables during festivals like Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, etc. Eating chicken was rare and was a treat during festivals. M&M's was called Treets ... We always carry a one ringgit note at night in case we were stopped by *mata mata* for not having tail lights on our bicycles. *Chow kway teow* was only 20-30 cents and some brought their own eggs. One *roti canai* cost 10 cents and a banana for 5 cents. Tick-Tock man will take order n deliver kway-Teow mee soup for 20 cents We bought *bangkali* bread from KK the Indian roti man who paddled his bicycle around the neighbourhood with the familiar ringing sound. At times we bought Cold Storage bread wrapped in waxed paper. Spread the bread with butter and kaya, wrapped back with the same waxed paper and take to school. A crew cut haircut by the travelling Indian and Hokchew barber was only 30 cents; all the way to the top. Reason:- easy to dry when *curi-curi* swimming in the river or in the sea. Mostly with no swimming trunks, only birthday suits. On Sunday mornings, listen to *Kee Huat* radio facts and fancies and Saturday nights *Top of the Pops* by DJ Patrick Teoh. Saturday mornings entertained ourselves with cheap matinees, usually cowboy or Greek mythology movies like Hercules. Father gave 70 cents for the Cheap Matinee screening at 10.30am on Saturday/Sunday; 50 cents for ticket, 20 cents for return bus fare, kacang putih or *kua chi*. Nobody pays 1 dollar for the reserve seats. Sometimes 1 ticket admission for 2 persons. Iced *angtau* was 10 cents. Iced ball was only 5 cents with half red sugar, the other half black sugar or sarsi. Never, never, never talked or mixed with girls until Form 5. Learned the waltz, cha-cha, rhumba, foxtrot and offbeat cha cha from a classmate's sister. First time dancing with a girl nearly froze; heart went *botobom, botobom* ... We survived with mothers who had no maids. They cooked /cleaned /washed and took care of us at the same time... singlehandedly. We took aspirin, candy floss, fizzy drinks, shaved ice with syrups ... and diabetes were rare. Salt added to Pepsi or Coke was remedy for fever. Tonic water was taken at the first hint of malaria. As children, we would ride with our parents on bicycles/ motorcycles for 2 or 3. Richer ones in cars with no seat belts or air bags. The first time, well not all but mostly, used a modern toilet by squatting on it; only know the bucket system. Our children will not know the danger of visiting the outdoor toilet at night nor jumping in fright when the man collected the bucket while we were still doing our business. Toilet paper was torn up newspapers on a hook which we have to crumble first before using. White toilet paper is an unknown luxury. Riding at the back of a taxi was a special treat. We went to the jungle to catch spiders without worries of Aedes mosquitoes. The worst disease one could get was a *lock jaw* caused by a rusty nails. With a mere 5 pebbles (stones) it would be an endless game. With a ball (tennis ball best), we boys, would run like crazy for hours. We caught guppies in drains / canals and when it rained, we swam there. We ate salty, very sweet & oily foods, candies, bread and real butter and drank condensed milk coffee/ tea, ice kacang, but we weren't overweight because we ran and ran and cycled all day only returning home at sunset or when hungry. We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and we still continued the stunts. Boh kia si ...!!! Most of us never had birthday parties till we were 21. Some don't even know what's so big about 21st birthday... haha !! We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and just yelled for them! When parents found out that we were caned in school, it's certain we would get another round of caning. Parents always sided with the teachers. We flew kites with string coated with pounded glass powder and horse glue and at times cut our fingers/hands on the string. Happiness was winning a kite fight with a local samseng. We also have to make our own kites to suit our *fighting styles*. We were the last generation to know how to use logarithm tables and slide rulers... bravo !!! AND I believe this generation produces the best parents because we remember the hard times. *CONGRATULATIONS!* You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids! And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how their parents lived." And we are still here 😄😁😃😄😁😃👍👌

1970's I was just a small boy living in Kuala Terengganu town...still remember the post office, the duyong island, seberang takir, such a nostalgic view...wish could turn back the time...

I have to differ with you on this. Photos from the 1960s and early 1970s may look nostalgic and lovely to you today but during those years, there was widespread poverty across the land. Majority of the people earned low incomes as the economy was heavily dependent on agriculture, rubber and tin mining with very little industries. Many towns had primitive sewage disposal system and human waste was collected from bucket latrines at the back of houses and shops. Infectious diseases like tuberculosis and cholera were rampant, killing thousands annually. Most people grew their own vegetables, fruits and reared livestock in their gardens to supplement their meagre diet. If you were a student in those days, you could expect to receive corporal punishments like caning or being slapped by the teachers over trivial offences. If you asked me whether I would want to go back to those days, it will be a resounding NO from me.

My parent's childhood years. What I noticed most is their skin color, dulu semua ramai main panas. Keluar rumah. Panas panas pun rilek je. Sekarang lama kelamaan kulit melayu makin putih and terang. Putih tu sampai ada yang tak natural. Betapa lajunya beauty standards bertukar, semua orang nak jadi putih. I think the asian tan aka our natural skin color is beautiful as it is! Yes those were the days in circa 1970.RTM only had two channels then and transmission started only at 6.00 p.m in the evening during the week days.But on Saturday and Sunday TV transmission started much earlier at 3.00 p.m.Popular TV programmes then were Ultraman,Banasplit,Monster from Outerspace,Night Gallery,the Black and White Minstrel Show,Man from UNCLE and many more.There was even a live telecast of the 1970 Thomas Cup final matches.
Yes that was 1970 nearly half a century ago.We did not have many TV stations such as Astro then.The cinema then was another entertainment outlet but tickets were very cheap for Third Class.
You had to have a license for a TV during that time, I think my grandma paid RM25/month.

"Rose Chan was our favourite performer. Wong Peng Soon was our favourite badminton player.
We reared Siamese fighting fishes, the seller was our idol.
Driving license renewal was by pasting an additional slip at the back of a small red booklet.
Susu lembu was house delivered by our big friendly and strong Mr KK Singh, on his bicycle is a stainless steel container. And the container cap served as a funnel.
Kacang puteh man came peddling, walking and balancing on his head 6 compartments of different types of kacang and muruku ... and we barter our old exercise books for a paper cone of kacang puteh.
F&N orange was served in wooden crates and displayed on tables during festivals like Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, etc. Eating chicken was rare and was a treat during festivals.
M&M's was called Treets ...
We always carry a one ringgit note at night in case we were stopped by *mata mata* for not having tail lights on our bicycles.
*Chow kway teow* was only 20-30 cents and some brought their own eggs. One *roti canai* cost 10 cents and a banana for 5 cents. Tick-Tock man will take order n deliver kway-Teow mee soup for 20 cents
We bought *bangkali* bread from KK the Indian roti man who paddled his bicycle around the neighbourhood with the familiar ringing sound. At times we bought Cold Storage bread wrapped in waxed paper. Spread the bread with butter and kaya, wrapped back with the same waxed paper and take to school.
A crew cut haircut by the travelling Indian and Hokchew barber was only 30 cents; all the way to the top. Reason:- easy to dry when *curi-curi* swimming in the river or in the sea. Mostly with no swimming trunks, only birthday suits.
On Sunday mornings, listen to *Kee Huat* radio facts and fancies and Saturday nights *Top of the Pops* by DJ Patrick Teoh.
Saturday mornings entertained ourselves with cheap matinees, usually cowboy or Greek mythology movies like Hercules. Father gave 70 cents for the Cheap Matinee screening at 10.30am on Saturday/Sunday; 50 cents for ticket, 20 cents for return bus fare, kacang putih or *kua chi*. Nobody pays 1 dollar for the reserve seats. Sometimes 1 ticket admission for 2 persons.
Iced *angtau* was 10 cents. Iced ball was only 5 cents with half red sugar, the other half black sugar or sarsi.
Never, never, never talked or mixed with girls until Form 5. Learned the waltz, cha-cha, rhumba, foxtrot and offbeat cha cha from a classmate's sister. First time dancing with a girl nearly froze; heart went *botobom, botobom* ...
We survived with mothers who had no maids. They cooked /cleaned /washed and took care of us at the same time... singlehandedly. We took aspirin, candy floss, fizzy drinks, shaved ice with syrups ... and diabetes were rare. Salt added to Pepsi or Coke was remedy for fever. Tonic water was taken at the first hint of malaria.
As children, we would ride with our parents on bicycles/ motorcycles for 2 or 3. Richer ones in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
The first time, well not all but mostly, used a modern toilet by squatting on it; only know the bucket system. Our children will not know the danger of visiting the outdoor toilet at night nor jumping in fright when the man collected the bucket while we were still doing our business. Toilet paper was torn up newspapers on a hook which we have to crumble first before using. White toilet paper is an unknown luxury.
Riding at the back of a taxi was a special treat.
We went to the jungle to catch spiders without worries of Aedes mosquitoes. The worst disease one could get was a *lock jaw* caused by a rusty nails.
With a mere 5 pebbles (stones) it would be an endless game. With a ball (tennis ball best), we boys, would run like crazy for hours.
We caught guppies in drains / canals and when it rained, we swam there.
We ate salty, very sweet & oily foods, candies, bread and real butter and drank condensed milk coffee/ tea, ice kacang, but we weren't overweight because we ran and ran and cycled all day only returning home at sunset or when hungry.
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and we still continued the stunts. Boh kia si ...!!!
Most of us never had birthday parties till we were 21. Some don't even know what's so big about 21st birthday... haha !!
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and just yelled for them!
When parents found out that we were caned in school, it's certain we would get another round of caning. Parents always sided with the teachers.
We flew kites with string coated with pounded glass powder and horse glue and at times cut our fingers/hands on the string. Happiness was winning a kite fight with a local samseng. We also have to make our own kites to suit our *fighting styles*. We were the last generation to know how to use logarithm tables and slide rulers... bravo !!!
AND I believe this generation produces the best parents because we remember the hard times.

Aku yang lahir pertengahan tahun 70 an pun rasa seronok hidup pada tahun 1980, apatah lagi hidup awal lagi zaman ni. Yg aku ingat, zaman ni semua kaum rapat dan x de rasa syak wasangka antara satu sama lain macam yg dah jadi sekarang.
