There's no need to fight because everyone is eating and the path too success is way clearer. Before there was limited spots for people to truly eat of music so it was in your best interest to grab the mic. ESPECIALLY if you are literally standing next to your competition on radio.
Also the UK music industry has become world wide now so its easier to shine then before even though some of the contents nowadays are not as good as like 5- 10 years ago
MrLondonStrong I hear what your saying the need for it isn't there. It's more about people trying to claim their the best but won't step in a ring and show it Grime was about wanting to compete to show they are the best but still was happy for the other artist to make music and blow in there own right look at Kano and Wiley. Wiley himself admitted Kano won there's no animosity Kano even said in3 wheels up saying "Me and Wiley in a clash that's a real mc" rap is meant to be competitive to an extent but can't let your ego take over trying to out rap someone is meant to be a fun experience. Also filters out the weak from the strong in a lot of cases now everyone is a goat cause no one gets humbled.
This was a great episode. There are many things that you both touched on which the scene as a whole are too afraid to address. We speak about artists dumbing down their music but so too are podcasters, presenters, TH-camrs etc - everyone wants to make money and therefore start moving corporate and the authenticity in everyone fades. Here you were more honest but even still you have to hold back in fear of upsetting people. We need more conversations like these! Subscribed!
@KC 187 The UK scene is in danger of burning itself out, the creativity and authenticity was very high back in the days of Wiley, Kano, Ghetts, Wretch, Skepta etc It’s why they are still making bangers to this day and touring all over the place. There are some great new artists around in the UK and it’s pretty easy to spot who will be in it for the long haul, who will make a long career out of making music and gaining a reputation as a top class artist. I get the “chasing the bag” mentality and I get that there is some serious money to be made from shows etc, but many music careers will be over sooner rather than later if the production quality of a lot of UK artists isn’t taken to the next level.
Nah the playlist ting is very important now.. i was devastated when i realised u have to pitch a tune to the DSP's weeks before.. i cant wait to pitch my album with detailed descriptions of all songs..
I love Poets in the barbershop analogy. Its so true. Now you see this big corporate machine of labels, agencies, all these other people who didn’t give a fuck about the “scene” 5 years ago, all of a sudden everywhere and all over these artists, when they probably couldn’t name a grime or UK rap song pre 2014.
Absolutely true or absolutely correct?...every rapper has a different journey and a reason why they rap. There are different types of rappers. However MCs are the ones that will always fight to be the best MC. That's why freestyle platforms like Daily Duppy on GRM Daily, Hardest Bars on Linkup TV and FITB with Charlie Sloth do so well. SBTV need to bring back F64
why do you think the top MCs in the UK are the Skeptas, the Kanos, the Ghetts etc etc - its cos in order for them to be respected they had to be the best MC in the room every single time they stepped in, and if they weren't they'd go home and make sure they were for the next time - personally think when those old skool grime vets stop making tunes it'll be a long time before someone else even comes close to their level, death of pirate radio killed the competitve aspect of the scene I know they'll be people saying theres still MCs spitting on pirate but it's not the same is it if we're being honest
The grind is what sustains them now. These rappers coming up have it easy; record in the bedroom, upload to TH-cam, and make a little change. They wasn’t there when these man had to roll to the studio and spit with *heart* in front of man they knew, didn’t know and didn’t wanna know lmao the few who made it consistently proved themselves. The mic was earned, never given.
sets are just songs now. the competition still exists, but it happens in the booth now. you can tell sometimes an MC has stepped up the levs purely because of the artists featured on the track. shits just different now I guess.

These man are right alot of the new youts dont care about the craft of baring . I cant see much of them loosing sleep over thier bars . Were as a man like ghetts i can tell if the bars are sub standard he wont rest.
Rappers aren’t MCs anymore. Rap has become almost all about success instead of displaying skill. You can blame Drake for that. Our generation clocked that being out there trying to be the best rapper doesn’t get you paid like trying to get on the radio.
It's definitely not drakes fault. Drake might have popularised introducing melody but he has always cared about his bars. I just blame it on atlanta rappers in general
@@umt6429 it’s definitely Drakes fault, Kanye and Cudi already made melodies popular before Drake. Lil Wayne was the father of birthing that Atlanta movement. The problem exactly is that Drake had bars, but since the beginning of his rap career he toed the lines between rapper and pop star. Everyone thought you needed to have a foundation as an emcee till he had the beef with meek mill and the world realized ppl don’t even care anymore if you write your own bars. If someone that was considered a top 5 rapper could be accused of that cardinal sin and get bigger from it the industry realized that being a rapper isn’t that important. Now rap is pop music, singers are rapping and rappers are singing, and their all getting richer from it. The most successful was Drake.
Considering rappers have popularised the term opps and recently Chip sent for Stormzy and even Stormzy sent back to Wiley in the beginning of 2020. Then Dot Rotten dissed everyone a few responded and that was at the top of 2020. This question really don't make sense. And that's just on the clashing side. But then you have features. Take a listen to features like Dave on Giggs new mixtape. He clearly stepped in the booth knowing he wants to be the best on the Mic.
What Poet said explains perfectly why men fall out of love, because initially we fall in love with women because of novelty and if they don't maintain that novelty we fall out of love
Nevermind the new age and their new way BUT we need the cyphers or whatever word you use for it today. On the block and rapping will and should never stop as clashing and being known as the best or one of he best is only for a few. That is why the industry is trying to move from that because the people they want to put on high may not look or act like you. Keep the initial training ground as underground and you will always be running the artistry, allow it to the start to be taken over by execs and the others and you will regret it but it will be too late. The new inventors need to remember that they come from the old inventors, respect should be given to all who respects the music.

Yup.. Especially this day n age.. Apparently, sales means you're the best.. Ive seen movies, music, and games sell great but be critically shit AF. Also why I don't understand why Kano don't receive more love here in the UK compared to a bloody Headie One or Dutchavelli... 94% of UK wrappers (yes, I meant to spell with a w) are the same, flow the same and spit the same crud talk and suck Drake off.
Rant Radio Agree. Though Kano gets his props from his era if that makes sense, before the metrics for judging rappers changed. These days, it’s judged by how involved you are off the mic. The clout has nothing to do with the musical ability so when rappers defend their name it’s gonna be by doing stuff off the mic. The new Grime era is the most jarring compared to the old cos clashing/sound clashing is a big big part of the ting. You take that out then what do you have...I will be disappointed if Stormzy don’t reply becah you can’t move like the King Of Grime coming @ Wiley coming @ chip (artists who would die on that hill) and not defend your castle with..Grime. Drill, arguably is more one foot in one foot out so the metrics make more sense there. Eventhough it’s mad how real human lives can be devalued in that music.
Blank facts. US urban scene particularly the hip hop side stays true to the fundamentals and gives a platform for skill, not just views.. Funk Flex is a big example of that. If Bhad Barbie was from the U.K. she’d be getting a Fire in the Booth and everything 🤦🏾♂️. I was thinking, if you make bear money from music as an artist but you ain’t spittin’ like that call yourself a P Diddy. Nothing wrong with being diddy just about knowing ya Lane!

UK Scene is still light years behind what was being done in the 90s. Mcs are scared to be themselves and all sound the same. Same flow, same lyrics, same delivery, same content. The scene will fade in a few years unless it envolves.
UK don't have any class acts other than: Kano, Ghetts, Wretch, Dave, Nines and Swiss and maybe Mist, imo.. Everybody else is just a carbon-copy of every other UK wrapper spitting the same boring crud talk.. That ain't skull or talent. Hell, even the music videos are ALL the same: rental cars on the rooftop of a multistorey carpark, rented mansion with swimming pool and somebody daughter doing the most wearing nothing, 20 mandem in face masks at night in some cruddy alleyway or dump site.. Very authentic and unoriginal 😒 90% of UK wrap should be dash-wey in the bin and restarted.
@@jonathanogundeji4342 Dave is a spitter in my books.. A breath of fresh air amongst the everyday crud and drill wrappers that surround him, plus he's a musician, being that he plays instruments. I rate him as a Flag runner for UK hip hop in the next 10yrs if he's still going hard
