A few tips from an unqualified individual: - You could get a PCI extender and lay the video card flat. - You could run the screen from the existing powersupply without having to use a wall-wart. - If you google the model number of the laptop screen you want to use, you can find tons of hdmi adapters for the proprietary connector. - Server power supplies are quite small compared to normal power supplies, might save you some room at the expense of noise. - You already have a mini PCI-E connector on your motherboard with some sort of adapter in it, replace it with a wifi adapter or wifi/bluetooth combo. This is a very very cool project, you'll still have heads turning, just for a different reason, my mouth dropped when you opened it up. I think I'm going to repackage my gaming pc into a briefcase now!
I cracked on one of these early 00's but the issue was getting a game-worthy LCD to chop up on zero budget. The design plan was something that could be run while standing up in closed form, LCD was to be stripped so it'd look like an additional dark panel from the outside with prayers I'd never need to do more than power the panel up. Had air-ducts made so all I/O was on the sides, tiny Compaq PSU. Fun little project. Then the guys all lost interest in LAN parties.. (VHS camcorder briefcase, forgot to add that. No raiser cards necessary with that beast!)
I would have done it differently. I would have put the monitor on the outside of the lid so it is upright when you open the lid. Then you would be able to get a bigger nicer monitor while having more space on the inside. It would also have the added benefit of looking less like a bomb and have more space inside for more powerful components.
This is some James Bond type stuff. I really like the creativeness, and how you tested power supply draw. I think you underestimated how much less power newer technology uses. I have a prebuilt Lenovo Thinkstation that has an i7-4790, 32 GB of RAM (4 DIMMs), an SSD, and a low profile GTX 1650. All of that runs on its 240 Watt power supply without issue.
@@raven4k998 i7-6700K was old West technology when I made the comment over two years ago. That CPU aged like milk and is still about $100 used. Worst CPU purchase you suggested. Also, my comment was explaining how he was overestimating power draw.

You can always use fps configs for tf2 which will make it effectively run on anything, stuff like mastercomfig etc. can boost your performance pretty heavily.
That's a fantastic project, bro! There is one thing I would suggest to improve usability - you could buy a pci-e riser cable and mount the graphics card horizontally near your monitor or near the power supply. This can help you keep the graphics card always plugged in, making operation of the 420-suitcase a lot easier:3
When you said about people making fun that its an old computer my first reaction was "that's the point". You built an old computer to play retro games on. A few tips and tricks. Open Steam, right click TF2 and go to Properties, click "Set Launch Options" and add "-console +fps_max 300" then click OK to save it. Then run the game and set everything back to low and start a bot match, your FPS will go as high as it possibly can (upto 300) which will give you a better idea of how much headroom you have above 60. Also while in game press tilde to open console, type "net_graph 3" then hit enter and it will give you all the info you could ever need to see. FPS, ping to the server, choke, packet loss, current interpolation rate (its called lerp in the graph) and more that I don't remember. Using these 2 you can really dial in the settings to get the game looking as nice as possible while keeping a good FPS. Obviously once you've finished you can remove them it you wish but it won't hurt anything t keep them there.
I remember seeing a lot of ads back when windows 7 was still supported about this kind of pc build inside a briefcase . I thought it was awesome and this one you put together is amazing.
You might try a small suitcase they would give you a little more headroom it would just be a little bit deeper like one of those ones the flight attendants use, plushy get wheels. Maybe a back kickstand to hold the lid up if you want with a rigged fabric case or maybe straps, I don't know. Hope to see more on this its pretty cool.
I once made a lanparty pc using a dead macbook. The keyboard and trackpad of the macbook are 100% usb, with only a different connector, I soldered the pins and put a common usb terminal. The screen, I bought on aliexpress a converter that transformed the display of the macbook into a common monitor with hdmi. So I set up a Core2Duo E8400 3Ghz (At the time, it was something like a ryzen 5 3600) with a video card similar to this one, all in an old dvd player housing. When I finished, I pasted the macbook on top of the DVD player housing using 3M double-sided tape, the setup was ingeniously nice to see. We played a lot of team fortress, cs source, and even half life deathmath
I forgot an important detail, the common power supply did not fit in the dvd player housing, so I researched for weeks, until I discovered that there is an HP computer that uses a small and thin source, similar to the classic xbox source, it was the source of an HP Slimline computer if I'm not mistaken. It was not very powerful, about 300w, but it served me perfectly. I used notebook HD to save energy, the motherboard was Mini ITX 775 DDR3, to use the video card, I used a cable that connected in the pci express slot to the video card, allowing me to use it lying on the motherboard . Another advantage of using the macbook, is that the keyboard is illuminated, the trackpad is multigesture.
it might not be the best guts money can buy, but it is complete, it works, and that's all that needs to be said about that. Congrats on the build, druaga!
At some point in 2016-2018, probably around the Jungle Inferno update, TF2 went through a major engine and graphics overhaul, in an attempt to improve visual fidelity @ 1080p and, more than anything else, address bugs and graphical issues with windows 10. Same thing happened to CS:GO, which also saw upgrades in regards to graphics and particles. However, this basically cut my framerates by 30-40% and my first computer, a 2013 HP 2000 laptop with an i5-3340M and HD 4000 graphics, struggled at medium-low, going as high as 60 FPS in spawn and as low as 22-25 FPS in heavy action. And, on top of that, I built a shiny new gaming PC in December 2019 with, originally, a 3400G, only to find that TF2 and CS:GO suffered frametime and framerate dips at high settings. The same thing happened when I used an old Firepro M6100 laptop MXM card in my Dell precision m6600, which actually outperformed the Vega 11 at stock. Whether it's due to VRAM limitations I have no idea: all systems I had problems on had 2GB of VRAM. Maybe someone else has more info on this...
Nothing to spark another Druaga1 binge-watching session like a fresh Druaga1 video. I really like this build, it reminds me of those 80's luggable PC's. Slap DOSBox and Lotus 1-2-3 on that bad boy!
41:41 holy moly, I felt like watching big space ship landing on new planet. nice vid, something fun, diy and different. Maybe go with bigger suit case? So u can put in normal 550W atx psu and go crazy in future with it and put like 1050 or something and maybe ryzen 3100? Would love to see upgrade of this thing in future.
I believe you could get an older 15-17 inch display and strip it from all plastic body. Much cheaper and effective. These things are often 10 bucks per piece. EDIT: You could ditch the converter brick with the right model of the screen. Also, instead of a keyboard I recommend to get something called a speedpad. I got mine(Belkin/Razer Nostromo T52) for 15$ used since laptop keyboards are bad for games.
As for keyboards...you may want to look into a „minimal“ keyboard with mechanical switches. Many open hardware variants are out there, where you just order the PCBs, a couple parts, keycaps and switches, an Arduino Micro Pro or Nano or some Atmel chip and you’re in business. From the minimalistic and compact „Gherkin“ and the CRKBD, the different flavors of Planck all the way to a fullsize „battleship“ model there are countless options. I mean....you don’t use a great many keys on a standard keyboard anyway, so there is definitely some potential to shrink things down without really sacrificing comfort. Bonus: it would be another great build project where you can customize your experience to your heart‘s content. 😊
As someone who just spent a ton of money building a SFF pc, this reminds me of my original inspirations about portable gaming, but is definitely more of a budget execution.
I remember LAN parties... Mech Warrior 2, Quake. Unreal Tournament CTF... the other guys prolly had i7’s with 32 gigs. Oh! Win 10, that explains a lot- Vista manages all of the memory. Oh my! Nice suitcase!
Hey, I did this exact same thing a few months ago! It's actually a little disturbing because you have the same motherboard as me and the same standoff screws from the same company. Currently mine is just being used as a server, and I haven't installed a screen yet, but I have a nice 10.1" display off of an old macbook pro I've been meaning to hook up to an LCD driver. I even cut out slots in the sides for the i/o panel and put a power button and LEDs under the handle. Sadly, I haven't found a way to make the ragged cut leather and exposed wood look good. I'd love to redo it with a metal-backed case like you have, since it would certain look a hell of a lot cleaner when cut.
Honestly if all you're planning on playing is source games. Using linux instead could give you a bit of a boost. Valve did a really good job optimizing the linux builds to the point that they run better.
@@IoIxDhe could use even a taped cardboard in there tho. Like he does all the time with sd adapters. But he could probably put the gpu at the side of the motherboard where the mouse is stored, where there is a empty space with some cables there...
Some suggestions: Get a PCIe riser so that you can lay the GPU flat. Lay the PSU flat. Get a bigger and thinner screen. Use an ITX board to make more room for other components. With the PSU and GPU laying flat you should be able to fit a much bigger screen. Also I think a SFX power supply might be thinner and leave more room for the thickness of the screen once laid flat, plus they come in higher wattages. You can also get a thinner CPU cooler and maybe be able to fit a screen that covers the entire top half. And finally, cut/3D print a plastic piece or cut a piece of wood to cover up the mess (leaving holes for ventilation where needed) This has potential to be something great. With a slightly bigger suitcase you may even be able to fit a tray that holds your keyboard, mouse and power cable on the bottom half so it's all nicely self-contained without having to resort to a 60% size keyboard just laying loosely. As for using a laptop screen, that's not a bad idea. There are a few different standards which you can find driver boards for that allow you to plug a HDMI in, mostly intended for Raspberry Pis and similar, that you can find on eBay, and if the screen you have isn't suitable, a bare LCD screen compatible with one of those boards isn't that expensive either. You can even find them in kits with both the driver board and screen. In the end it's not worth spending much on improving the design if you're only intending to use obsolete hardware in it which many cheap laptops these days could probably beat. But you do have the potential of putting modern hardware in it and using it both as a LAN gaming PC, and as a desktop at home, just close it up and it's pretty much the same shape and size as a typical desktop anyway. That would be a really cool project.
I was looking into building one of those in a pelican knockoff case using an ITX board and a monitor that used 12v DC so I could power it from the SFX-l PSU. The pelican knockoff did have more room than a briefcase. I didn't because it would cost to much.
I already loved TF2, but thanks to this video I have now seen Not Quite Human and Not Quite Human 2 and eaten Cheetos. That's almost 1 more thing that I love now.
the core I5 uses much less power then the core 2 quad as it uses 77 watts were as the core 2 quad will use up to 105 watts so that's why the power draw drops with the i5 when he switch's lol so it's better for him to use the i5 over the core 2 quad for that reason alone
Okay: Your idea is appreciated but I have following improvements: - get yourself a PCIe riser cable because the slots will be a problem - get a little cable management (two or three zipties go a long way!) - for your SSD: just place it right and down to the display. There is some unused space - get yourself a connector for the outside of your case! You could use this to more permanently mount your AC power in - and last: get yourself a USB Hub installed you could get dirt cheep and mount to the side of the case - For WIFI: Insert the antennas of a laptop inside the top of the case in order to improve your reception and transmission quality - and SHORTEN THE AC WIRING! You are wasting space and asking for problems you don't want! - The power switch you could use a button like a doorbell button on the right top of the case.
I would have put the monitor on the outside of the case. perhaps having it on a center hinge so it could rotate on the center. that way you could have it inward-facing when not in use and outward-facing when used.
I dig it. I recommend the Logitech K400 keyboards. Batteries last forever and the bluetooth works great. I picked up a box of laptops and I use the older ones instead of the newer ones. My fav is an HP Envy and a Dell Inspiron 15 -3521 touchscreen. These are older but they work better than anything I've ever owned and they are repairable / upgradeable :)

He's back! We will welcome his return with sacrifice! Pour water on your computer right now to sacrifice.
I guess it worked because I spilt bong water all over my keyboard earlier today 🤣
All of that runs on its 240 Watt power supply without issue.
meh it needs a 6700k not a crappy old 4790 that's so old west tech at this point🤣
@@raven4k998 i7-6700K was old West technology when I made the comment over two years ago. That CPU aged like milk and is still about $100 used. Worst CPU purchase you suggested.
Also, my comment was explaining how he was overestimating power draw.
@@Junkyard_Dawg so it's newer then a 4790k which is all that matters🤣🤣
@@raven4k998 Your suggestion still sucks. 🤣
I was really excited once I realized what was going on. A computer built into a briefcase? Oh, I bet he has a plastic panel for it on the inside, so he can rest a keyboard on i-
The he opened it.
Lan Parties really?🤣
You can always use fps configs for tf2 which will make it effectively run on anything, stuff like mastercomfig etc. can boost your performance pretty heavily.
That's a fantastic project, bro! There is one thing I would suggest to improve usability - you could buy a pci-e riser cable and mount the graphics card horizontally near your monitor or near the power supply. This can help you keep the graphics card always plugged in, making operation of the 420-suitcase a lot easier:3
and he ads a newer motherboard and gtx 1650 low pro into it for the hell of it🤣
When you said about people making fun that its an old computer my first reaction was "that's the point".
Good information
And here I thought you were gonna have ReactOS on in! 😂
the coolest part about it is you can carry it around like this and put it down like that
it might not be the best guts money can buy, but it is complete, it works, and that's all that needs to be said about that. Congrats on the build, druaga!
*proceeds to remake the compaq portable*
At first I was expecting a briefcase like the one in the movie inception. Everyone just pulls out a Ethernet cable and everything is hooked up.
Yooo I just thought of making something like this a week ago, and then boom drauga1 video about his. Awesome
great minds think alike
aw man ur comment made my month idk y but thanks hope u have a good day!
I love the story telling in the first 5 minutes, glad to see another old-school tf2 player.
you could probably use a PCI ribbon cable to make the card flat against the case
I love how you do this the VERY DAY I PLAN ON THIS
i was really expecting something a bit more elegant, but I have to say I really enjoyed watching and I am glad you had fun with this project.
also i bet it smells delicious, like old burntish library book. the case is amazing
this is the equivalent of the gamecube having a handle, to just bring a gaming machine anywhere
As someone who just spent a ton of money building a SFF pc, this reminds me of my original inspirations about portable gaming, but is definitely more of a budget execution.
I love this computer. It feels more in line of what I would do with an old PC laying around lol
I remember LAN parties... Mech Warrior 2, Quake. Unreal Tournament CTF... the other guys prolly had i7’s with 32 gigs. Oh! Win 10, that explains a lot- Vista manages all of the memory. Oh my! Nice suitcase!
Man, that ain’t bad! I could actually see you gib a couple o guys with the rocket launcher!
This lan briefcase is an awsome hack. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
The wire routing and exposed guts make my eye twitch. Oh man.
First of all welcome back dude, second that is cool AF!
WOW your computer sucks!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂
There should exist an angle or cable riser/adapter for your graphics card socket I think.
There is but wouldn't that be ultimately useless, because he would have to place the graphics card in the extra storage space anyways?
IoI xD he could lay the card sideways on the pci slots, which should clear the screen
@@voqelfrei5398 I suppose that is true, actually, although there's no telling what could short the graphics card then.
@@IoIxDhe could use even a taped cardboard in there tho. Like he does all the time with sd adapters.
But he could probably put the gpu at the side of the motherboard where the mouse is stored, where there is a empty space with some cables there...
Hey Druaga, smokers here, and today we're going to be watching your video
Hey Smokers Druaga1 here lets play call of duty on a 486dx4 133
here i am almost 3 years later still asking you to install linux or windows 98 on an SSD in a fat PS2 using the IDE adapter thing they made for it
Funny story, we build a similar one but with no shielding around the power supply. Guess who excitedly touched right in it during testing...
And finally, cut/3D print a plastic piece or cut a piece of wood to cover up the mess (leaving holes for ventilation where needed)
This has potential to be something great.
He has returned. We are saved.
Damn dude, deep rock galactic. That's one of my favorites.
Not bad druaga built something similar to your lan briefcase a while ago great to see you back in the game
I was looking into building one of those in a pelican knockoff case using an ITX board and a monitor that used 12v DC so I could power it from the SFX-l PSU. The pelican knockoff did have more room than a briefcase. I didn't because it would cost to much.
I had an FX like that until a few years ago. It was a P-6831FX.
I already loved TF2, but thanks to this video I have now seen Not Quite Human and Not Quite Human 2 and eaten Cheetos. That's almost 1 more thing that I love now.
You can probably easily find a driver board for the laptop display on aliexpress you just need the displays model number
All your motherboards in boxes have lead up to this. How could I have been so blind and missed the evolution?!
There are off-the-shelf components to adapt laptop displays to HDMI, no soldering required
What would be awesome is if they could go back to the old days.. where you had a male input and female output of the power supply
A TF2 LAN party. Now that sounds like a good time.
The god of PCs has spoken...
the core I5 uses much less power then the core 2 quad as it uses 77 watts were as the core 2 quad will use up to 105 watts so that's why the power draw drops with the i5 when he switch's lol
so it's better for him to use the i5 over the core 2 quad for that reason alone
420 watts is a lot of headroom, I am running a 3900X on a 200W PSU. that's proper sketch
Okay: Your idea is appreciated but I have following improvements:
- get yourself a PCIe riser cable because the slots will be a problem
- get a little cable management (two or three zipties go a long way!)
- for your SSD: just place it right and down to the display. There is some unused space
- get yourself a connector for the outside of your case! You could use this to more permanently mount your AC power in
- and last: get yourself a USB Hub installed you could get dirt cheep and mount to the side of the case
- For WIFI: Insert the antennas of a laptop inside the top of the case in order to improve your reception and transmission quality
- and SHORTEN THE AC WIRING! You are wasting space and asking for problems you don't want!
- The power switch you could use a button like a doorbell button on the right top of the case.
So that's what's in the intelligence.....
That's Druaga1 in a box right there
I really love this computer laptop hybrid its janky af but also not janky and I love it
I would have put the monitor on the outside of the case. perhaps having it on a center hinge so it could rotate on the center. that way you could have it inward-facing when not in use and outward-facing when used.
