I don't think you could really call it partying. He came from a generation where alcohol and cigs were just part of a Northern working man's routine. Up until manual labour in factories, garages and workshops became far less common as an occupation. People would be smoking through the day and it wasn't uncommon to go for a couple of pints at lunchtime. Do that today and you'd be thought of as a raging dipsomaniac. Not condonng it, but it was once pretty typical behaviour for a significant proportion of people.
