I work in a business where I receive bottles of booze at Christmas time from lots of customers. Over the years it was usually the same type of bottles. JW black, Blue, Dewars, Chivas, Pinch and odd bottles of rum from Cuba or Haiti and the like. Over time I accumulated @60 plus bottles. I would drink one here and there or give them away as gifts. Later I was lucky enough to find a store owner that took some in as store credit. I went on TH-cam for some advice. Found Ralfy. He got me so interested in the hobby with his wisdom and enthusiasm that I dove right into it. I then went back to the store armed with new found knowledge. I believe among my first haul I grabbed Old Pulteney 21, HP 18, Laphroaig 18, Laphroaig Qcask, even some old Glenmorangie wood finishes from the 90s. And a new passion was born. Thank you Ralfy. Because of you I shared my only single malt (Lagavulin 16) experience with my father before he passed away. I’ve been a follower since. My modest collection of liquor is now near 100 bottles in all. All good quality stuff of course. Thanks again. Glad we’re all on this journey together.

Ralfy, I'm a long-time viewer, and will continue to be, so I genuinely say this with love. When you said that more have died from the fear than the virus, it made me cringe. 1.16 million have died from the virus. These were people who loved, and were loved by many. We should cherish their memory and not belittle their deaths, and part of that is do do our best as a worldwide society to minimize the number of future victims. There is a difference between fear and caution.

Of the 229,000 reported deaths in the US, only 9,000 can be directly 100% COVID attributed, the rest all had secondary causes. They even counted a man killed in a motorcycle accident Covid because he had it. You see hospitals in the US get more $$$ for reporting a covid death. So the mortality rate , true mortality, is slightly north of the Flu. Let’s get our facts straight, then we can manipulate them to suit our argument.

I got into Whisky as I visited Scotland for my first time. On a rainy day, we visited Talisker Distillery and did the tour. There I had my first dram of Whisky. After that, I tasted a few other Whiskys in the Pubs and ended with buying my first Bottle. That was a Ardbeg 10 ;-) Cheers and keep care of you!

As a young teenager I never understood quite why everyone my age was chugging beer and doing vodka shots. When I was around 8 years old I remember going to my grandfathers house and seeing him opening his liquor cabinet, and I got quite intrigued by the bottles and always asked about it, but never got an answer haha. Being from a younger generation, I spend a considerable time browsing youtube and the internet and fortunately stumbled upon a video named "Understanding whiskey" I think, from the bastards at Whiskey tribe. I was blown away by the descriptions of the experiences and the beautiful bottles, still not understanding a thing. A few years past, now I'm proudly maintaining my own whisky home bar with my own money and shitting on snobs always when I get the opportunity haha. Cheers and thanks for being part of my journey Ralfy!

I can agree that a passion for spirits (in my case mostly Scotch) cannot be truly explained.
So many people try to tell me “you can’t possibly enjoy the smells and taste of liquor” (claiming I do it just to get a buzz).
I then ask if those same people if they would like a habanero pepper from my garden (and it’s almost always “no ,that’s too hot or I can’t taste more than the spice”).
Just like I can’t explain why I like spicy food so much, I can’t explain what inevitably got me hooked on Whisky (the buzz doesn’t hurt though). Lol
Drinking a spirits made and matured at a “quality-conscious” distillery gives us connectedness to the land, the people, their history and reminds us where we are in this current moment (and how lucky we are to be alive).
And if I can’t visit Scotland in this current moment... at least I have SCOTLAND IN A BOTTLE 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
    Cheers Malty Pals!

Golf with my Dad in Scotland was my entry into Single Malt Scotch. We travelled from the San Francisco bay area to Scotland to travel around and play golf. Our first stop was Turnberry, we then went to Saint Andrews. After each round of Golf we would order a single malt. We had a great trip, just a wonderful time. One of those once in a lifetime moments.

Ahhh the drinks cubby, yes that takes me back as a inquisitive 9 yr old . The smell of sherry and brandy and malt whisky in a mahogany sideboard. The door didn't open for months on end. I used to put my head in and drink in the smell. Like yourself I sample some and had to water some down in fear of getting caught. Thank you for taking me down memory lane, and remembering that intoxicating blend of the booze cubby. I have one myself and my eldest son share the same interest. Don't know many uni student with Ardbeg and other malts in his house share room.

I have to thank my mother in law for getting into Whisky! One Christmas break a few years ago I was relaxing on the couch reading a magazine with a smart note regarding Whisky, I shouted to my wife (I will get into whisky "joking of course") I continued reading my magazine and a few minutes later my wife walks up to me and hands me a beautiful glass with a beautiful amber liquid. I asked her "what's that?" she tells me that the liquid is whisky and to just try it. I grab the glass and after the first sip I just had to know more about it. My very first whisky was a Coal Ila 12, and LOVED IT!. For a few years I believed it was my wife that got me started but she confessed later on that it was in fact my mother in law who told her to give me some to try. Whenever I try a new whisky I remember that first sip, and I raise my glass to her. =)

Nice to listen to with a small Dram of Ardbeg. Right now, with winter approaching and a kind of isolation that we're living in now (sounds depressing, but we're not heading that way;)). After seeing half an evening of various Reviews and bothy talks and extras. Does this come close to some sort of talk you have with your best friends after a few good drinks. The advantage of listening to Ralfystuff on youtube is that the moment you enjoy your whiskey too much! You can rewind the movie after missing a piece of the conversation.. I will have to get used to that again later, when you can drink whisky together with friends.

I had a very unique and overall a pleasant experience in Aberdeen a few years ago. My mother, sister and I were driving though Scotland. It was a 2 week vacation for us. Anyways, we ended up in Aberdeen at one of the Skeen Houses on a a Saturday night. I decided to go out a and take a few photographs of the local party goers and pub dwellers. Had a pretty interesting night, got some good photographs, got lost for a while. The locals were quite nice in helping me find my way home. It was such an interesting place and nowadays I could still hear the sound of seagulls and immediately I remember my trip through Aberdeen. Great place, great country, great people.

I guess we all have here that accident that led us into whisky and is linked with strong memory. Mine was rather funny. After going to Ireland when I was 18 for learning english, I brought a speciality back home : a bottle of Bushmills Black Bush that I drinked very carefully and kept some when the bottle was nearly finished. One night, my mother invited people home and one of them liked whisky-coke... now you see me coming. The basic blended whisky for whisky coke was empty, so my mother gave him the last drops of the Bushmills and these where immediatly mixed with coke. When I came back home a few days later from University, my mother felt so bad about that that she bought me a bottle of Glenfiddich 12... and so began my story with whisky. Thanks Ralfy for sharing your experiences with whisky. I learned a lot watching your videos !

I actually did set out to discover single malts on purpose. After many years of hearing references to it, including many on M*A*S*H (a 12 year old Scotch), I figured that there had to be something about it. I spent a couple months reading up on it and discovered you, Ralfy. When I felt ready to make an informed purchase, on March 17, 2011, I went out and bought a Glenlivet 18 and a Highland Park 12. I still have every receipt from every whisky purchase and after this 9 year journey (so far), I can attest that there is something about it.

I had to laugh when you made a face about Bacardi. I came to appreciating through spirits through cocktails. I've been doing a deep dive on Daiquiri ratios all month using Bacardi rum! And while cocktails are still my preferred way to drink, this year I started a whiskey and rum collection and began taking my own tasting notes on all of them, inspired in large part by your 600+ videos. I think it was your Hot Toddy video that hooked me, as well as the desire to only use the best whiskies in my Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, and Rob Roys that found me watching reviews. It's now leading me, slowly but surely, to shifting my drinking routines to more and more simple drams of quality spirits. You're totally right: you don't plan to get into this stuff. It just sort of happens. And we all get there in our own way. Cheers & good luck getting over your cold!

One of the biggest for me was that all whisky is smokey and I don’t like it, turns out aimlove smokey whisky and the one I had many years ago probably wasn’t smokey but rather just cheap bad whisky.

As every Jewish person who goes to shul in the UK on Shabbos knows; after the service there is a Kiddush (communal festive meal), or at least there was before the pandemic. Towards the end of the service, the aromas of sweet wine, bridge rolls, fish balls, smoked salmon, herring and pastries begin to waft through the air as the Kiddush committee sets up the food at the back, making your stomach rumble.
In my parent's shul and many others I have been to, they assemble a number of little plastic cups and place them on trays, arranging them around the tables. Some are trays of sweet red wine, others are trays of yellow grape juice and others are Scotch Blended Whisky such as Grants or JW Red Label. They always place labels on the trays but sometimes these can flip over onto their sides (or some naughty boy goes round switching them...hmm). I wonder how many young kids, like me, got their first shock taste of whisky by picking up (by mistake) one of these cups, thinking it was grape juice?

It's all so odd in our love of the wee dram....I'm 51 and hated whisky until I was 45.....yup and I'm saying that as a 51 year old Scotsman. Loathed the dram for many years and suddenly when I was presented with a speyside (not telling you which)....but for the past 6 years and during this period....I've collected so many bottles when I could afford to collect them..I sampled many......and yes I'm from Aberdeen..

I’ll tell you how I got to single malt, it was my Grandparents and relatives keeping bottles of Johnny Walker Black and Chevis Regal around And after drinking that garbage I decided I hated scotch And wouldn’t touch the stuff again until I was in my 40s.
The only thing I would use blended whiskey for is cleaning stuff I have never tasted one that I like.

Hey Ralfy, great post, can't wait for your next books! I have a question, with NAS whisky, I understand that they add content from multiple casks to get the desired result and don't want to put 3yr on the label because they have possibly used some 20yr. Would a distiller not be permitted to indicate on the label, or at least the carton, the quantity and age of all the malts that were put in? (Ex. 5yr old containing 1/3-5yr, 1/3-10yr, 1/3-20yr)

    • @miserablerhurensohn
      @miserablerhurensohn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I like the McCrae's 7 year a lot and bought 12 bottles. There's not a lot of Mortlach around here either and the GoT one seems too expensive for what I've read about it. I have a few bottles of the Rare/Old Mortlach which is very nice but too "smooth". I'm thinking of adding some of the 7 year to that to give it a boost.
