    There are so many "little" pieces that come together to create an amazing and mechanically beautiful machine.

    God I'd love to work there. There must be so many years of skill and experience in that place. You couldn't ask for better people to be working on your old tanks.

    seeing the armour over the track units close up, its easy to understand why the Italians had great difficulty in knocking them out! i love this series, very well made, clear filming and great explanation of the process....nice people too...well done!

      They Italians couldn't knock out a mobility scooter.

    Really goes to show how some components on a wartime tank like that fall under the "it seemed like a good idea at the time" category (in reference to the return roller design that the crews needed to weld to keep from falling apart, and the whole "keep clear of mud" idea on a vehicle that WILL be driving through muddy areas).

    Im not a fan of the way the tank is designed around the tracks and suspension. Other than that its a fine machine. Love these videos. Thanks to all of you guys taking the time out from your work to talk to us and keep us in on the work. We appreciate it immensely.

    Kudos to all the folks who worked on this restoration; would love to get back to Bovington and buy you all a pint!
    But wow! All those beautifully machined bits + North African sand = some very grumpy maintenance crews! I guess that’s what you get when you ask a locomotive manufacturer to design a tank suspension!
    Would love to know how this suspension design (with all of its tight tolerances and brass bushings) compares with, say, an M4 Sherman’s suspension.
    Lovely job, and this series really gives me a new appreciation for how complicated and precise these machines really were! Little jewel boxes under all that cast armor!

      If you understand the basics of automotive engineering, this vehicle in particular is pretty easy to understand. They were not very complex by today's standards, but the did require a lot of hours to build and maintain.

    I can see a zap with a wielder would do the job but I can think of many less drastic options to stop the caps holding the bearings coming lose, especially as you would need to get them off after. I wonder if that was a standard solution or just something done by whichever maintenance unit was working on this Matilda at the time wherever that was?

  • @jjardine357

    This looks like more hassle than it should be. How did they keep them running during the war?

    do we know if the matilda will be ready for tankfest 2016?

    • @aflappincod
      @aflappincod 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look at the state the tank is in currently. Now ask yourself if you think they can get it all back together and running in a week.

    • @10willdude
      @10willdude 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      dont know whether this is the current state of the tank or recorded some time ago. I just know that last time I was there they said they hoped it would be ready for tankfest.

    • @aflappincod
      @aflappincod 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be very poor film making for them to say "current project we're working on" in a video if it isn't going to be released around the same time of the recording of the video.
      Matilda 2 was running a while back but because it encountered issues as did the Churchill running up to tankfest they decided to restore it properly.Hell you can even see that this is being funded by the Arts Council. And the tank museum only won the money for that earlier this year.
