I am sure you recognize your mother being the woman she is did not shut the door to your eventual relationship with your father. Your mother protected you and herself by getting out (and away) from the relationship. I knew when I was very young and my parents split my father really wanted me to love my mother like he had but my mother unfortunately did not want that for my father. I had the reverse situation as you but similar to yours I learned from their actions.
