    Hi JT. Back in June of this year I came across your inspiring series of videos regarding the GCR3. Before that, I had never heard of such.
    I am almost 63yo and at the time I was overweight, had dangerous blood pressure levels, hadn't been on any significant exercise program for more than decade and was living on highly processed foods and 3 giant Red Bulls per day. When I saw your videos I immediately decided to use R3 as motivation to change my dietary and exercise habits. I scheduled an R3 attempt of my own for the fall and trained hard all summer.
    Since then I've lost 40 lbs. Covered more than a thousand training miles on the trails of the Eastern Sierra, got my diet and blood pressure under control and am headed out on my first R3 attempt in 3 days (Oct 24th 2024).
    In the same spirit you showed, I've set a time goal for myself that I likely can't reach first try. Like you, I will also return as many times as it takes to reach it. It's not an adventure if you know how it ends.
    I just wanted you to know how much respect I have for the discipline you showed and the effort you put in to make your dream happen. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Not sure what is more impressive - the actual journey and making your dream come true or the way how you told the story in this video. Very impressive and congrats!!!!!!

    JT - I am so happy for you and proud of your accomplishment! I'm also so moved by your storytelling and video. You've managed to tell a story that on the surface seems to be about your love of the Grand Canyon and a goal, but also is a deeper one about life's opportunities, the often "crooked" path to success, and the determination to accomplish something big. Thank you! About a year ago your videos inspired us to do R2R - as it turns out, on this same exact day. We saw you as you and Nathan neared Cottonwood and saw Carl not far behind. You all were gracious enough to say hello and provide encouragement. Thank you! Congrats again to all of you.

      HEY DELWIN! I remember you! It was fun to run into you on that day! I'm so glad to be part of your own journey in some small way. Thank you very much for telling me. I hope you guys had the most amazing time! Thanks for stopping to say hi to Nathan and I. It was fun to see you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. The Grand Canyon is and always will be an resource of very important life lessons for me. Like you've mentioned the "crooked" path. So true. I hope you have a great rest of the week! Thanks again!

      Hey JT - just checking in with you. Hope you and all are well. I know how difficult the “come down” can be once you accomplish a big goal. Just sending good thoughts your way and hoping that you have another big hairy adventure in the works. You are such an inspiration!

    Congratulations on making your goal. The Grand Canyon is an inspirational place. I decided to start running because hiking R2R2R in a day was taking too long (and I had started hiking to one day hike the canyon). Fast forward a year, I’ve done 3 50k’s, a couple rim2river, a 100k and shortly after my 100k last week I was asked to run r2r2r w/someone. It is so cool to just be able to do that on a whim.. at 52. If you find fun trails it isn’t work, it is an adventure. Keep on moving 💪

    I love this! Congratulations!! My 5 year old likes to watch hiking the Grand Canyon before bed and we have followed your journey. I've hiked the canyon multiple times in the last 2 years, never R3. It's definitely a love relationship with me as well, but I do question myself every time coming up BA why I torture myself🤣

      Thanks Deidra! So glad you enjoyed it and I'm glad your 5 year old likes it too. Watch out that child is going to be a Grand Canyon junky if you're not careful. 😁 I know exactly what you mean about coming up BA. I've said many times "I'm never doing this again!" or "Why do I want to do this!?!" Then you're done and the next day you're thinking about going back! Glad we can share a passion for the Canyon! Thanks again!

    Awesome video! Such raw emotion expressed. I totally get it. I will never run it, but been to GC twice. 2021 went and only made it to OohAah (I had no real aspirations to hike it, just see it). Promised I would be back to R2R it after my son & his fiancee did it that year. Came home trained for a year, lost 40 lbs and went back in 2022. R2R 2022!! Tears of joy ran as I topped BA. Now my plan is to make it an annual trip and hike. I may never run it, but hike it I shall. This place is an addiction

    Had to be carried out of the Karakoram on the return trek from K2 base camp. 6 days. Getting there was tiring, but the altitude broke me as we got back to Concordia. It was frightening, but mostly embarrassing.

Of course, I'm sad that you and Carl couldn't cross the "finish line" together, but I'm glad y'all had an agreement about it. Have you thought about your next big goal yet?

    Jared, as always your videos are an inspiration. I am so, so pleased for you - so much preparation, so many setbacks to overcome, so much focus - all leading to your eventual and very, very much deserved success! Congratulations!!
    I have done R2R and the South Kaibab/Phantom Ranch/Bright Angel loop a few times, but have never managed to tackle the R2R2R, let alone aim to do it in 16 hours. I think I discovered Grand Canyon hiking about 20 years too late! This summer I finally made it to Ribbon Falls with a friend - not as impressive as your achievement, but it was a goal I had set for myself after following your inspirational videos, so Thank You!
    What's next, Jared?

      Any hike in the Grand Canyon is a big accomplishment! What you've done is amazing and you shouldn't sell yourself short. It's all relative. All the hikes you've mentioned are very challenging as you well know. Congratulations on making it to Ribbon Falls! That's quite a big accomplishment in and of itself! I'm glad you like the videos. I'm glad they've been helpful to you in some small way. Thanks again!

    JT - congratulations! I have been following your Grand Canyon adventures for more than a year. Your love of the Canyon and pursuit of your goal has been contagious. I am no runner but I did make the R2R hike in October. Thanks for the inspiration. Now I too am smitten. I will be returning again next year to beat my time and hopefully hit a better weather window. We crossed this year and had six hours of hard rain. I really enjoyed every minute though. Not everyone gets to see the Canyon with waterfalls all the way through the Box. Great job on the fitness and execution, that is a serious accomplishment. The video is well done as usual. But I shouldn't even have to say it: "With Carl or it doesn't count". I'll be awaiting the May attempt and update. :)

    • @livetruewithjt1551
      @livetruewithjt1551  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Team Woot, Thanks for following our adventures and for watching the video. I can see how you might feel that way. Both Carl and I have wrestled with that same concept (not finishing together or leaving someone behind) when we first started doing this. We quickly realized that sometimes we have good days and sometimes we have bad days and those days aren't always the same for both of us.
      In 2018 when I had some pretty significant challenges Carl was reluctant to go on without me but he finally did after I told him to several times. You can watch that video here if you haven't seen it. th-cam.com/video/1PoKD6ned3M/w-d-xo.html
      We've been friends for more than 20 years and we support each other in our goals and all areas of life. He had worked just as hard as I did and spent countless hours training and sacrificing time with family or time to do other things on the weekends, to get ready for R3. Not to mention taking time off work and the expense of hotels and all other costs associated with actually going there.
      It wouldn't be fair for me to expect him to hang back with me because I couldn't do it. It would be different if we weren't trying to do it for time.
      Since then we have always had an agreement that if one person is having a good day and the other person isn't, the person having a good day has a responsibility to keep going. It's not just for themselves but for both of us.
      It's the same reason Nathan went ahead at the start. He's trying to get "his time" which when he gets it right will be well faster than 16hrs. It's also the same reason we all left Carl's brother Joe in our most recent Rim 2 River leading up to this trip.
      Joe is just starting out and is at a different fitness level. Carl and I needed that day for training and needed to push ourselves at our own fitness level. Joe understands that clearly and is very supportive.
      Thanks again for watching.

    • @Team_Woot
      @Team_Woot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@livetruewithjt1551 I understand you made an informed choice, and the right one given the situation. Everyone deserved their own race. You guys are pros at this point, everyone was safe.
      Nathan and Joe are fine, JV squad is fine (bring back JV squad!), but they are just supporting cast. It's been you and Carl, attached at the hip, with the same goal, from the beginning. No doubt we were all hoping you two would crush this together. Carl still deserves his 16 hours, I hope you keep pushing him.
      We did our first out-and-back in November. I told people I would be "done" after that. Turns out there is always an excuse to go again.

    • @livetruewithjt1551
      @livetruewithjt1551  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Team_Woot I will support Carl until I die. Even then I'd probably come back as a spirit and push him on. We are going back for sure. Nathan is already putting our next trip together in May.
      CONGRATS ON YOUR OUT AND BACK! That's awesome! I know what you mean about "being done" and "going again". The Grand Canyon has a way of pulling you back. 😁

    Awesome adventure! What % time did you spend running vs hiking? I just started preparing my 2nd R3 on Apr next year and would like to do it in 18 hours. My first attempt earlier this year took me 21.

    • @livetruewithjt1551
      @livetruewithjt1551  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks eomer! I ran much of S. Kaibab but slowly. Hiked from the black bridge to the N. Kaibab trailhead ran some down the North rim and much of the time to Phantom Ranch. Hiked the rest. I would guestimate about 70% hiking and 30% running? Something like that. I actually run much less than I ever though I would need to in order to get that time. My best advice would be to train a low heart rate the first 8 weeks to build aerobic fitness then spend LOTS of time on elevation gain and strength training. If I could ONLY do one thing to train it would be hills hills and more hills. Hope that helps. You can get 18. You're already very close.

      @@livetruewithjt1551 Thank you, very useful. I consider myself an active person, in 2021 I run Chicago and NYC marathons in Oct and Nov, gave myself couple of weeks rest and then trained from mid Nov to mid Apr this year, when I did the R3. But it was mostly road running and clearly I lacked elevation and strength, and also, training on trails! Very difficult when living in NYC but this time I am committed to venture out of the city most weekends to train on trails. Still difficult as Dec to Feb means training on ice and snow, but nothing I can do. Something you pointed on your video and that I need to apply, it's to focus and keep moving. It's so easy to make multiple stops: taking pics, talking to other runners/hikers, spending too long in PR/Manzanita/ North Kaibap, etc. This time I'll be more determined to prevent that. Anyway well done again!

      @@eomer1981 Wow! "active" may be an understatement! That's a good point about not stopping. I tried to minimize all my stops and it made a difference. Just stopped briefly but only if I need to get more water. I do think training on trails is very helpful. I can't imagine training in ice and snow. I'm spoiled here in AZ. Good luck in your training! Let me know how it goes.

    A couple questions for you JT…
    What was you peak training day (miles, elevation, time) for your last R2R? How long was that before event day?
    Thank you

      Sorry I missed this. I typically train for R3 so I'll answer your question based on that the best I can. Usually I focus on elevation gain and aim for working up to about 4,000 to 5000 feet of elevation gain in a workout and do this by many hill repeats. Miles generally range between 12 and 20 or so in a given workout. I've found that total miles aren't nearly as important as sustained elevation gain. I start a few months or so out with lower elevation gain (about 1600ft or so) then work my way up each week until I've done several weeks in a row between 4 to 5K or pretty close. I should clarify that the elevation gain I'm talking about is all in one day not spread out during the week. My big training days are usually on Saturday. I do lighter runs and some strength training during the week. I usually do a 2 week taper to recover before event day. I hope that helps.

      @@livetruewithjt1551 Thanks, JT. I meant to ask about doing a R3. Always tempting to pile on the mileage to get close to the 46 total miles.
