🚶🏾♂️Just got back from Merida two weeks ago and I LOVED it. Cartess says you have to walk the streets to feel the city. Everyday, I just picked a new direction and just walked. Great people, restaurants and culture. Behind some of those big walls are beautiful courtyards & pools. Merida is a great city. Can’t wait to go back.
Take a walking tour of Baltimore MD, Detroit west side, Los angles CA, Oakland CA, Fresno CA, downtown Seattle WA, and Portland OR. Your appreciation and respect for your new surroundings should grow. Contribute positive gratitude for the people and place in MEXICO.
So true! I am born and raised in Seattle and it now looks like Gotham when I go into the city. I’ll take Mexico any day now!

@Belltown Daisy jealous!! We are planning our exploration trip in the spring and then a summer stay and hopefully will move down end of summer. If anyone has info on international elementary schools would be much appreciated!
People who complain that Merida is not "pretty" or it doesn't look as "nice" as they expected are still stuck in the mindset of needing to impress other people with what they have. Too many people think "I want my family and friends to be wow-ed by where I live" or want to make other people jealous of where they live. They aren't thinking about all of the INTERNAL benefits of living in a place. They're only worried about what other people will think when they see it.
No place is perfect. You just have to find the place that is perfect for YOU. And "perfect for you" can't be dependent on what other people will think about it.

That salty air coming from the beach will rust the frame of a car too. That’s the price you pay living in coastal areas but the home structures are very solid. In America we literally have stick built houses that can’t withstand a good fart 😂

Thanks for showing the real Mexico. We vacation in Puerto Morelos and the neighborhoods are similar. I have been to gourmet restaurants that were next door to a pile of rubble. Some other restaurants would have been closed by the Board of Health in the States, yet the food was excellent and I never got sick. You just have to keep an open mind.
Great video Cartess reminds me of the neighborhoods I grew up in in South Florida only thing missing are the Homelees people and drugs deals on every other street corner.

Looks like many neighborhoods in Florida, NY or Texas or any state in US. At least Mexico is starting to renew, restore and remodel everything they're growing and getting better! The United States is going backwards and not fixing anything, especially after COVID and every time a hurricane hits nobody replaces signs, landscaping.... a lot of businesses apparently are just keeping the insurance money and neighborhoods look run down. Every place has good and bad and US isn't as picture perfect as some people try to believe. Can't wait to get out of here to MX in early 24'.

You are absolutely correct. What you are talking about is culture shock. For some folks, it is too big of a hurdle. For others, they get pst it and reap the rewards. I stay in the state of Jalisco. And lots of the neighborhoods look like the one in this video. And yes, get behind the doors and it is nice. You e done a great job of trying to educate people. Keep it up and buena suerte.

Reminded me of the Florida we'd see on vacation in the 1960-70s when I was growing up -- back when Fort Walton was slow and friendly, and Destin didn't even have a hotel. Just looks like families living their life in a hot climate!

I lived there almost five years and loved it…the trash pick up three times a week…I never saw any beggars or bums

You either like it or you don’t. When we lived in Lake Chapala we had friends visit. The husband asked what we liked about it so much and he said “it looks like the entire country needs a pressure clean.”
I found it easy to explain to him the things I loved, but he couldn’t see it.
Funny thing is we used to go to key west twice a year in the 80s and 90s, and some one asked why we liked it.
They said it was smelly and dirty. Lol.
I think some of us like older buildings and things with character and history, while some just don’t see it.
Plus, I agree, the quality of life is a huge draw.

I think Americans are so use to tearing everything down. We have no since of preserving history. It's all about turn and burn. That's why I love other countries. They appreciate their history.

Oof! That looks amazing compared to where I am in Sonora. I walk over piles of litter and dying dogs and houses made of wood pallets with tarps for roofs. It's a fishing village and there are NO restaurants. No big stores. 4 hours from any other town. I didn't pick this place but in all my decades of traveling Mexico this is the most "real" Mexico I've seen. And it's still okay---I was on a cross country trip and someone broadsided my van and I lost all of it. And this is where I was dropped I stayed to help with the stray dog problem, but it's rough. Merida is CLEAN. I've been all over the US too. I'd MUCH rather live in MX and Merida would be a dream. Veracruz is a budget friendly tropical spot too. Much overlooked by the gringos. Great channel. May have to look you up to help me get a little finca for a dog rescue.

I’m watching you from Bucaramanga this evening. Making my way round to Manizales. I wanted to see Ibague too but won’t have time on this trip. I love so much about Mexico! I wish I could have Mexican style walls at my house in AZ! (city ordinances won’t allow it, much less the HOA). I love the privacy many of the houses in Mexico have. A coat of paint, a flower or two, and you can make any wall look pretty.
@Belltown Daisy it’s hard to find a house in Phoenix without an HOA. It’s a love/hate relationship but not bad if you have good neighbors.

This looks like the majority of the Mexican neighborhoods Chicago. Its not bad its just an old city with old buildings like Chicago. I bought a condo in a building that was build in the 1800s. Whenever people come in they are amazed of the renovations that was done INSIDE of the building. Outside is outside, what's inside is what matters. People need to stop being so uppity.
A lot of what you’re seeing on the walls is water damage from flooding and storms…Growing up in Sonora…I didn’t see that on the buildings there…but Mexico is a different culture!…They have a different view on garbage collection..and a lot of other things!…You’re right Cartess about the fact that you have to decide what’s important to you!…If you go to the high-end communities you will find more curb appeal…Sometimes though you have to go through a guard gate!…think Yucatán Country Club….most of those people don’t walk the streets a lot….Places like Roma Norte in CDMX are more walkable…and has more curb appeal…with people in a higher end neighborhood walking about…🤗

This ain’t nothing new. The biggest demographic moving here are wealthy Mexicans from other States within Mexico. Ain’t enough foreigners coming here to jack up the prices in the manner you’re suggesting. The wealthy families moving here from other Mexican States have way more money/income than the influx of foreigners coming that are trying to survive on their retirement//social security income. You’ve been fed a lot of ‘fake news’ my friend. Don’t believe the propaganda. In any of these neighborhoods, especially the wealthy neighborhoods, US citizens make up less than 1%. They are not the ones moving and living in the big mansions and rentals priced $1k-3k USD per month. They can’t afford it in most cases.

Yes. While most require a 12-month lease, there are places that will do 6-months (not many, but they're out there).

As long as it's not a stinch...I can take a different look....sometimes that helps decrease folks to steal because they figure everyone is modest.
People who never traveled don’t know that some countries don’t spend the tax payer money on sidewalks and medians. As a result the real estate taxes are very reasonable like $500 or less A YEAR!! So, the government leaves it to the citizens to replace the sidewalks in front of their house or property. Also, we can’t equate rustic with crime like in the US. It is expensive the repaint, re-cement for the locals. So, they may prioritize other things….like living, eating good food and family and friends. In America they sell us aesthetics instead of community, freedom, less racism, and friendliness. Mexico looks just like all of Central and South America. I went to Brazil and the same. Some fancy upscale areas but many medium local prices. And the walls are topical for security and privacy. Stress free living!!

I can see where folks are deceived by the looks of it, I guess you gotta take the good with the bad. You take a loss on the esthetics but save money on the other hand. In Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, you get the same if not better exchange rate and its nicer on the eyes. Mexico is a little more desert like and dry like Arizona, New Mexico..its just not my thing.

It’s Mexico people, a poor country, why you think so many of their citizens risk their lives to come to America. I think the government need to invest in the beautification of the city.

Many mexicans come to the USA because its a money machine, but they love their country and where they grew up. I know plenty that, after discovering the USA has no soul, go right back to MX…. the money isnt worth it here anymore. And also worth mentioning, people are risking their lives to come to the USA from places further south than MX due to communism, gangs and low wages, people from El Salvador, Cuba Venezuela, Haiti are also at that border…some have even been taken in by Mexico. Even people from Costa Rica “risk their lives” to come to the USA, for money, the only thing this place is/was good for. Mexico isnt struggling like some think!

How many US citizens are a pay check away from total financial disaster? How susceptible you are from being financially broke and with a lifetime debt due to a medical emergency? Did you know that around 70% of Americans don’t have a passport? Don’t get me started on student debt fiasco, credit card debt and homeless problem in the good ol’ USofA and how most US citizens are house rich and cash poor. Lol. But yeah, please keep telling yourself how “great” the US is and keep munching on that propaganda they keep feeding you about being the “best” nation in the world. Laughable!! Oh and keep on enjoying all that processed food too. I think Merida is beautiful. All the trees the old architecture and the newer modern homes as well.
