Built on the same small-car platform as the Chevrolet Cobalt, the 2006 HHR (Heritage High Roof) joins America's booming market for crossovers of every size and stripe. Consumers are mad for car-based vehicles that blend the styling attributes and utility of SUVs, station wagons, minivans, and pickup trucks, thanks in part to a crossover's higher vantage point for driving and usually available all-wheel-drive system.

I just got a 2006 HHR LT as my first car and I can't help but be proud of it

I have the 06 LT, and I have to say it is one of the nicest rides I've ever had. I never thought I would use the asswarmers in the seat till I made a 1.2k drive without a backache. I'm a big fella, and it fits me like a glove.
My only complaint is that Chevy picked the dumbest location for the window controls imaginable. But other the that, it's a dream. The little 4 cylinder is amazing with the speed of the passing gear. You can do wonders with gear ratios.

By far one of the most unique cross overs on the market today, Great ride, great looks, steering and braking power. I drove a friends HHR one day and went out and bought one myself the next day. No problems at all with my HHR it seems well built and solid and I feel I got more bang for the buck by buying an HHR as compared to buying another vehicle. You can customize these babies in any number of ways, plus the stereo is bangin'

I bought one new in 2007.I have the bigger 2.4L engine and I'm amazed how quick you can pass another car on the highway.

Ah, I see. There are definite similarities between the Cobalt and the HHR, but the differences are so great there would have to be two separate assembly lines. Good point.

Not sure why people would give you thumbs down for what experiences you've had with your HHR. You're right, there is a problem with the shifter and ignition. Both my step-mom and dad each have an HHR, 2006 and 2007. Both have had problems with the shifter, the 2006 had the problem with the ignition too. The finish on the rear chevy emblems bubbled. I liked HHR at first, but now after buying my Kia they seem really cheap and plastic. Doors sound flimsy too. Like driving a big Rubbermaid bin.

What you say is certainly true- I know about the Plymouth Acclaim, and it is a very good car. I was unaware any had been made in Mexico, however. It does sound like they make some quality cars for the companies that have factories there. I miss the days where Detroit's steel was the best around, and V8-powered, rear wheel drive cars ruled the roads. Just isn't that way anymore, though.

@BestestMoron The rental car is going to be the base model. Also, being a rental, it's probably been abused most of it's life before you drove it. Yes, the car has a plastic covered interior, but it's also about much better equipped for it's class. They did list a negative in that the engine is loud, but also note worthy is that it is quickest in it's class.

@alecat88 sorry, it doesn't sway me away from buying hhr. You are here to generalize every HHR owner has that sort of problem. In my hood, I ve seen lots of people driving HHRs. If they have those kind of issues, how come they buy them even from used car lots? I am sorry to hear about your problems, but I don't like someone exaggerate the problem as some sort of big deal.

Exactly. They COULD have it built in the US, but it's cheaper for them to have it built in Mexico. That's why companies do that. Any company. It cuts costs for them and in turn allows the company to sell their product at a more competitive price. Truth is most vehicles these days are global in production. Designed in Japan, built in the US with parts from Korea. Well, something like that anyway.

  • @palebeachbum
    @palebeachbum 15 ปีที่แล้ว

That's really not the case anymore. Toyotas are build in the USA, as are Hyundais. They are usually styled by USA designers too. American cars being built in Mexico is nothing new. My old '92 Plymouth Acclaim was also built in Mexico. It was one of the best built cars I've owned. VWs are built in Mexico as well. BMWs are built in the USA.

I am disappointed to see that the HHR is built in Mexico. How American can an American car be if it isn't even built in America? And plus, if the HHR is based on the Cobalt, couldn't GM just build it in the same factory in Lordstown, Ohio?
But despite all that, I completely agree with myride's review of the HHR. It is magnificent in appearance and in performance, so much so that it more than makes up for the lamentable fact that it's built in Mexico.

I own a '06 LT2 54,000 miles, it's adequately powered, lower MPG then what I thought I would get, but my biggest complaint is, This car has so many rattles and squeaks. The electric steering produces a lot of torque steer, and is very over assisted no feel at all. We have also had a major issue with the Traction Control malfunctioning, and turning itself off. I don't know if this is just because this car is produced in Mexico or what but wasn't what i was expecting at all.

@buba666able exactly why would you be embarrassed, other then it's a piece of junk, Mine looks pretty cool. LT2 trim, with the chrome, pioneer stereo with sub woofer, 17in Chrome rims...

    This comment is simply correct.
The HHR is fun to drive, but, like many aerodesigned autos, it has the glitch that when you roll down the back windows without rolling down the front windows, you set up a harmonic that causes a boom box gone wild pulsation which is admittedly quite unpleasant.
That said, the car is till interesting and worth checking out.
Now, if only Chevy comes through and sends me my check. NOT!

Hey, cool it, sir. My point was this- Chevrolets are American cars, and they should be built in America. BMW's are normally made in Germany, Jaguars in Britain, Toyotas in Japan, and Hyundais in South Korea. When I buy a car of a certain nationality, I like for it to come from its country of origin. And do please lay off the anti-American stuff...

i hate to say it but americans dug their own grave instead of being happy with haveing a job in detroit they had to figure a way to force car makers to move their plants to another country. does a ceo of chevy really need a yaht in mexico a ceo working for chevy has a 3 bedroom house in a decent nieghborhood and makes a good living period thats it thats all you need.

Anti-American? I am just responding to the way you express about Mexico, because when people talk about my country, only illegals, poverty and tortillas come to their minds.Next time think about "Globalization" when you talk about machinery or technology, because , for instance, a Sony mp3 player may come to the USA, but it could have been built in Taiwan
