Embracing the bedridden and sick who probably have little to no access to hygiene would infect him quickly. To add to that, leprosy can stay incubated/symptom-less (not sure here) up to even half a year. So, probably more like months.

Lepersy originates in insanely unsanitary, damp/wet, places with all sorts of shit around it which transfers onto people after prolonged exposure That said, there's alot of stigma and misinformation around the disease and because of that those areas stay filthy and gross and the people there forced to stay there with little to no aid. So it appears to "spread like hell" but in actuality it's just people stuck there with more people getting out there and not enough treatments to reduce it all
And it also is accurate, because lepers in the old age used to charge in the front lines of their armies, they no longer feared death due to their condition and they could take so much damage and keep fighting because their nervous system couldn't register pain. And honestly that's brutal and metal af.

I love how his sword is a symbolism for himself. Broken in body, its integrity failing. Yet still massive and powerful. Fulfilling its duty despite its state, and unyielding in the face of the inevitable.
I love how in the shrine, every character struggles with regret over their past crimes and mistakes, subsecuently looking away from the Light in shame. All except the Leper, he stands facing the Light because he always did what was right and is at peace with himself.
And the graverobber, too. She do look away from the light, but gives more the vibe that she doesn't care what fate thought of her poisoning her abusive husband (her portrait shows her not being sad or remorseful, but utterly disinterested and more captivated by the dagger she fiddle with. In fact in one of her barks preceding a chapter of her lore suggest the only thing she regret about poisoning her husband is that she did it in an impulse rather than carefully planning it and was sloppy as a result.
A very distinctive trait of the Leper is that even after everything he had gone through he still found the world beautiful. It is so depressing to see how the only character managing to stay mentally positive about their existence is unable to do so physically. The story of this game is so messed up.

Occultist? A power hungry little bastard who stole the power of one of the most powerful eldritch entitys in Darkest Dungeon world. And the people around him and his sanity payed the price for it. Man-At-Arms. A Noble turned soldier from the shame and guilty he felt to lead his soldiers to their deaths. But what the Lepper, the one overtaken by disease to the point of almost blindness has to be ashamed of? What did he do wrong on his past? He has nothing but reasons to be pround of what he was and what he is. A beloved, kind and just king. Even without his crown, his majesty countinues. And what he decides to do once he exiles himself from his own castle? Decides to help more people. Long may he reign. And even longer may he fight.
I see the darkest dungeon cast/party as being part of one of 4 groups.: - The psychopaths and powerhungry ones, either for Occult powers or Fortunes or Glory. (Runaway, Arbalest, Abomination, Vestal kinda, Houndmaster maybe) - The ones who did nothing wrong but wish to do more good. (Leper, Shieldbreaker kinda, Bounty Hunter maybe) I see these 2 to be close to Baldwins tier of "I did nothing wrong" for following reasons.: Shieldbreaker because she was a slave who didnt have much of choice, she was used as exotic attraction to earn cash for her captors, till she was bound to sold to a Vizier. So she chosse to escape at the cost of chopping off her arm and being considered "no longer beautifull". Bounty Hunter acording to his CC trinkets seems to be doing what he does not just for money, but to put a stop to criminals who wrong him or others, since one is the molars of I assume is several crime lords or gang leaders, with a vengefull list of targets. What exatly his getting payback for is currently unknow. Flagellant i have no fucking clue where he fits. He doenst seem to do nothing wrong to others besides abusing himself to fight Eldritch powers and madmen, but his only virtous/afflicted state, Rapturous puts him in a concerning area, hell not only hurt himself and put himself at risk but will target others in the party sometimes.

I love these backstories. Not only do they tell us of the characters' pasts, they also include the past versions of the characters themselves. When the game comes out fully, I wonder if it's going to be possible to "repair" Leper's sword, using the model from the memory.

The little details. At 10:23, his sword is perfect condition but at 11:26, there are visible signs of damage on the blade. The devs could've totally used the same art in both cases and nobody would've cared. But they didn't and I love it!
Such little breathes details, breathe huge amounts of life into not only the champions but the enemies as well. I really liked the woodsmen deaths door animation. Clinging onto a small toy horse almost as if he was regaining his memories.

why is leper one of my favorite characters of darkest dungeon? well, i have many reasons, he is a self-suficient tank that has one of the best buffs in the game, can heal both stress and HP with only one hability and deals a lot of damage, but, most of all, because he is a good man in a wicked world, he fights for what he thinks its good, not for money, glory or satisfaction.

Darkest Dungeon always had a motley crew filled with those engulfed in weakness, insecurity and vulnerability, in true Lovecraftian fashion. Dismas was not able to accept the fact that he murdered a wife and child, and he constantly tortures himself for it. Paracelsus is a woman with knowledge, and yet, her words are constantly pushed by the wayside - she tortures herself out of hatred towards others, and thus is willing to go through immoral lengths to obtain vengeance through correction. Barristan was once viewed as a coward in the first Darkest Dungeon game - but now, he's viewed as naïve, defeated by something far greater than himself and the army that he led, unaware that he was being led to his own embarrassment. But the Leper is different. He is a hero in his own story, loved by all. He was noble in his youth, and he will continue to be until his disease takes him. He has nothing to torture himself over, he views the world in all of its beauty, and if there's anything which threatens that beauty, he will fight it to uphold it. A true stalwart that looks to the faintest of light rather than focusing on the monsoon of darkness which surrounds him.
His name in game is Baldwin. This is reference to an actual historical figure named King Baldwin IV who was in fact a king who suffered leprosy. He was well respected and ruled during the crusades.

A great detail: In their Hero Shrine art, every character faces away from the light, ashamed of their past. Except for the Leper, who is the only one who feels no regret, and faces his past head on, towards the light.

I just LOVE the leper In darkest dungeon 1 during my first playthrough i had a Leper Caen, came with some really good virtues and was an absolute UNIT. i tough i was ready so i entered my second darkest dungeon, it went HORRIBLE, 2 out of 3 turned crazy and Caen turned virtue, i had no more items, and most characters were on the berge of death, so i decided to just abandon the dungeon, but ALAS one random hero will stay to give the others a chance at escaping, guess who decided to stay behind? I just love to imagine an undescribable horror just coming out from the darkness, the rest of the group runing, looking behind them and just seing him taking off his mask and runing towards the beast.

It only matters on the start of the turn, because the very first move is yours. Royal Rebuke at the start, then Out Of My Way to get closer, as all the others act/lose Stun, then Embrace. Repeat until cooked well.
Why tho? They were all alike to him, those horrible, prudish people. They had same ideas and same will for treachery, for which they paid. I think it doesn't matter much, although it's funny to fight clones sometime xD
Leprosy is treatable, but it takes a regimen with more steps than "apply this cure and let him rest." been some time since i looked it up but apparently different medications are needed at different stages of the treatment, when done correctly it could cure completely too. point is, that was beyond the doctors of that age, a treatment either worked or not back then.
"As he walked beyond the city gates, he marvled at the beauty of the world. And was grateful for his many blessings." A will of titanium and a heart of gold. Leper deserves his own show.
A man, who sufered now preventable desease, there where leprosy was long way fatal, he choosed to do whats right as a ruler, to help the people even before and after he got it, and to save the kingdom he exiled himself to stop its spread, even on his way he shows his carefullness to not spread it, DD1 if camping there was option to let the mask down to heal stress, one of his quotes is: "Dont go near, or you might catch it." If this man isnt a definition of chad, i dont know what it.
The Leper may be my favorite character in the entirety of Darkest Dungeon; he’s a true paragon of the Light and Hope the world needs, facing death down because he is dying, but never falters in the face of that fact.
It’s the same pop up for when a hero gets a disease in normal gameplay (and since leprosy is an actual disease you can in game, it’s completely possible for Leper here to contract leprosy twice). Clever to use it in the flashback.
My thoughts consider that the Leper is like the opposite of the Ancestor. Wonder what would happen had the leper was the one owns the estate/hamlet in DD1?
Most likely in his benevolent vision to help others, the Dark corrupted the morally pliable and cause them to become astray during the fateful excavation to ensure the Heart was properly taken care of. So the Hag was in her bid to treat the condition of the Crimson Curse and other common Maladies in the Weald became focused on pure experimentation The Prophet was a true madman who spread fear and loathing because he despised the Leper and accused him The Necromancer was trying bring back the dead to prove a King can live beyond death, but learning of the dark intentions had them executed The Siren was one of the former prostitutes blessed and aided by the Leper, but when she realized his love was for all similar women combined with an ailing body that leperosy was starting to claim bought an forbidden artifact to attract the mother of the deep and to free herself from the disease and become the Siren. The crew is self explanatory, greedy beyond belief and their own greed become their own undoing
So basically he’s King Baldwin the 4th from the movie Kingdom of heaven. I can already hear the cries of “Jerusalem has come” in the comments. For the record his embracing the lepers had 50% to do with Christian duty and 50% had to do with a medieval belief that since king’s were supposedly appointed by God to their throne their touch could supposedly sometimes heal the sick.

Honesty the Leper and Hellion are my favorite characters in this game , HWM is a close up too but i like these 2 more Leper just being a gigachad and carying for lepers and then after contracting leperosy still continues to kick ass and hellion being overconfident and getting her clanmates killed and looking for redemption through pretty much being always near to death is really amazing aswell

It was implied from his original comic (from around the time of the first game) that he was a king who had gotten Leprosy, and fro his quotes that he had chosen a path that would lead him to get Leprosy -meaning it likely isn't, as that came before COVID.
adding onto @Starshine Dropkick!, the Leper's 'canon' name is Baldwin, after Baldwin IV or Baldwin the fourth, also known as the Leper King who ruled Jerusalem. He was known as a very spiritual king and ruled justly despite his leprosy consuming him, as his kingdom flourished both financially and spiritually. So this isn't a ref to COVID
Your distaste for compassion says a lot about you. Staying safe is importabt, and in real life I highly suggest people take the restrictions seriously. But the Leper's compassion went beyond his advsisor's - he personally went and tried to help those people that nobody else would.

The little details. At 10:23, his sword is perfect condition but at 11:26, there are visible signs of damage on the blade. The devs could've totally used the same art in both cases and nobody would've cared. But they didn't and I love it!
Whats amazing is that he was actually so mad at his advisors that he swung his sword so hard it broke it in one fight.
Such little breathes details, breathe huge amounts of life into not only the champions but the enemies as well. I really liked the woodsmen deaths door animation. Clinging onto a small toy horse almost as if he was regaining his memories.

why is leper one of my favorite characters of darkest dungeon? well, i have many reasons, he is a self-suficient tank that has one of the best buffs in the game, can heal both stress and HP with only one hability and deals a lot of damage, but, most of all, because he is a good man in a wicked world, he fights for what he thinks its good, not for money, glory or satisfaction.
He fights for what is objectively good, no less.
I would argue he is the solo hero in the roster.

Darkest Dungeon always had a motley crew filled with those engulfed in weakness, insecurity and vulnerability, in true Lovecraftian fashion.
Dismas was not able to accept the fact that he murdered a wife and child, and he constantly tortures himself for it.
Paracelsus is a woman with knowledge, and yet, her words are constantly pushed by the wayside - she tortures herself out of hatred towards others, and thus is willing to go through immoral lengths to obtain vengeance through correction.
Barristan was once viewed as a coward in the first Darkest Dungeon game - but now, he's viewed as naïve, defeated by something far greater than himself and the army that he led, unaware that he was being led to his own embarrassment.
But the Leper is different. He is a hero in his own story, loved by all. He was noble in his youth, and he will continue to be until his disease takes him. He has nothing to torture himself over, he views the world in all of its beauty, and if there's anything which threatens that beauty, he will fight it to uphold it. A true stalwart that looks to the faintest of light rather than focusing on the monsoon of darkness which surrounds him.

Leper being a king
His name in game is Baldwin. This is reference to an actual historical figure named King Baldwin IV who was in fact a king who suffered leprosy. He was well respected and ruled during the crusades.

In darkest dungeon 1 during my first playthrough i had a Leper Caen, came with some really good virtues and was an absolute UNIT. i tough i was ready so i entered my second darkest dungeon, it went HORRIBLE, 2 out of 3 turned crazy and Caen turned virtue, i had no more items, and most characters were on the berge of death, so i decided to just abandon the dungeon, but ALAS one random hero will stay to give the others a chance at escaping, guess who decided to stay behind?
I just love to imagine an undescribable horror just coming out from the darkness, the rest of the group runing, looking behind them and just seing him taking off his mask and runing towards the beast.

It only matters on the start of the turn, because the very first move is yours. Royal Rebuke at the start, then Out Of My Way to get closer, as all the others act/lose Stun, then Embrace. Repeat until cooked well.

Leprosy is treatable, but it takes a regimen with more steps than "apply this cure and let him rest." been some time since i looked it up but apparently different medications are needed at different stages of the treatment, when done correctly it could cure completely too.
point is, that was beyond the doctors of that age, a treatment either worked or not back then.
I'm told we'll get the outfits the heroes wear in the past as cosmetics to wear in game, so we get pre-leper Leper lol

A man, who sufered now preventable desease, there where leprosy was long way fatal, he choosed to do whats right as a ruler, to help the people even before and after he got it, and to save the kingdom he exiled himself to stop its spread, even on his way he shows his carefullness to not spread it, DD1 if camping there was option to let the mask down to heal stress, one of his quotes is: "Dont go near, or you might catch it." If this man isnt a definition of chad, i dont know what it.

It’s the same pop up for when a hero gets a disease in normal gameplay (and since leprosy is an actual disease you can in game, it’s completely possible for Leper here to contract leprosy twice). Clever to use it in the flashback.

My thoughts consider that the Leper is like the opposite of the Ancestor. Wonder what would happen had the leper was the one owns the estate/hamlet in DD1?
Most likely in his benevolent vision to help others, the Dark corrupted the morally pliable and cause them to become astray during the fateful excavation to ensure the Heart was properly taken care of.
So the Hag was in her bid to treat the condition of the Crimson Curse and other common Maladies in the Weald became focused on pure experimentation
The Prophet was a true madman who spread fear and loathing because he despised the Leper and accused him
The Necromancer was trying bring back the dead to prove a King can live beyond death, but learning of the dark intentions had them executed
The Siren was one of the former prostitutes blessed and aided by the Leper, but when she realized his love was for all similar women combined with an ailing body that leperosy was starting to claim bought an forbidden artifact to attract the mother of the deep and to free herself from the disease and become the Siren.
The crew is self explanatory, greedy beyond belief and their own greed become their own undoing

So basically he’s King Baldwin the 4th from the movie Kingdom of heaven. I can already hear the cries of “Jerusalem has come” in the comments. For the record his embracing the lepers had 50% to do with Christian duty and 50% had to do with a medieval belief that since king’s were supposedly appointed by God to their throne their touch could supposedly sometimes heal the sick.
Another neat detail: the Leper swings his sword with the left, like Baldwin in real life would since his right was unable to.
He is the only hero looking directly at the light. All others can't look at the light.
So does this imply Baldwin the Leper is the king of the entire kingdom where darkest dungeon 1 and 2 is taking place? Did his “death” cause the entire broken and cursed state of the country?
One of his abilities is literally The Chad Stride.
Before I knew his lore he was on the bench. Now? I make damned sure the most wretched highway predators up to the incomprehensible beings that do not understand human virtues RESPECT THE BLOODY KING. They were athirst and he gave them drink, they were sick and he gave them succor, motherf*ckers got in the way of him being a man who belongs at the right hand of righteousness and he broke his blade off up their backsides before walking towards the sun and daring evil to give him a worthy death.

Leper just being a gigachad and carying for lepers and then after contracting leperosy still continues to kick ass and hellion being overconfident and getting her clanmates killed and looking for redemption through pretty much being always near to death is really amazing aswell

Most of those first drawn to the Darkest Dungeon suffer psychologically, but for the Leper, his damage is purely physical.
I said this once and i'll said it again, even though his appearance is hideous and terrifying, he had a good heart not just as a king, as a person and as a human. Fuck I love leper so much😭😭😭😭😭

It was implied from his original comic (from around the time of the first game) that he was a king who had gotten Leprosy, and fro his quotes that he had chosen a path that would lead him to get Leprosy -meaning it likely isn't, as that came before COVID.
adding onto @Starshine Dropkick!, the Leper's 'canon' name is Baldwin, after Baldwin IV or Baldwin the fourth, also known as the Leper King who ruled Jerusalem. He was known as a very spiritual king and ruled justly despite his leprosy consuming him, as his kingdom flourished both financially and spiritually. So this isn't a ref to COVID
It was common practice to touch the diseased for kings and queens in those times, people believed it would help them.

Staying safe is importabt, and in real life I highly suggest people take the restrictions seriously.
But the Leper's compassion went beyond his advsisor's - he personally went and tried to help those people that nobody else would.
