i think maybe but most as an enemy. because like practically speaking the only reason he took on the OG horror in the first game ignoring "because it would lead to more pain" ultimately was because the light willed it as the only religious type characters ignoring the fanatic was playable characters working together. this new threat though seems to be angling the orders of religion against the world in a doomsday situation. i'm thinking he doesn't have the independence to break out and do good but instead just sort of allows himself to do whatever beats him the fuck up most which in this case would be the crazed flaming cultists which heavily beats out typical flagellation in terms of pain.

TL;DR Vestal grew up as a nun or the equivalent of that, had simple, easy life being a church girl. But, she wanted more, found lewd curiosity, ended up peeping on people having the business. Priest found her, sent her to be tortured. The Light saved her and she was able to escape... but her sisters who she likely shared her life and time with were punished with death for Vestal's mistake.

So that ads to the blasphemy. Vestal were suppose to be virgins also, so the other thing is relevant too.
The light is just another form of lovecraftian influence. The symbol of the church is the same as the madness symbol, just flipped. “A man in a robe, seeking communion with the divine… madness.”
I thought the Vestal had one of the lightest backstories in the comic... Boy I was wrong. It's interesting how her shrine portrays the church of light in a far more negative... Light. Sure, there were some unpleasant implications of corruption and warmongering in the original game, the latter which was shown in the Crusader's comic, but otherwise they were portrayed as a genuine force of good given how they denounced the Fanatic as an heretic for his extremism against those affected by the Cimson Curse I guess this goes to show how factions like the Fanatics came to be: with the world ending, those people dropped any pretenses and became the monsters they hid to be behind their faith. Then again, this ambivalence might be inspired by the real life Catholic Church, who has been capable of both great good and evil, and harbouring true saints and absolute devils
I also get the impression that they are going for another aspect of the IRL Catholic Church: your fate often depended on who's hands you ended up. Sometimes it was a fairly reasonable guy, sometimes it was a sadistic motherfucker.
I don't think the Fanatics in the Sprawl are necessarily Church of Light people or otherwise were highly religious prior to the apocalypse - they're probably just a hodge-podge of both clergy and average cityfolk , as they seem to represent more of an anarchic fury resulting from nihilism.

The sprawl is ironically the most well lit of the regions by virtue of being constantly on fire and the "Flame" seems to be a centerpiece of the church of light's faith, they also revel in self-flaggelation, which is a practice also shown to be adopted by said church.

Also, unlike DD1 where cultists would fight alongside the main factions of each region, the ones in DD2 dont, so maybe each DD2 faction has some remaining humanity in them, atleast enough to recognize the cult as the enemy and source of their state. I also don't think the Fanatics necessarily are continuing the Church of Light - they're probably more like the Fisherfolk in the sense of turning to some paganistic worship of fire - the male casters are even called Shamans, rather than Priests or something to that effect.
Don't be fooled - Vestal's comic is exactly what it appears to be and nothing more. DD2 is engaging in revisionist history - rewriting every character's backstory to be comparable to Dismas' - either by making the characters massive assholes who are seeking redemption just like Dismas (MAA and PD especially come to mind), or, where that isn't possible as in this case, just making their life as unutterably miserable as humanly possible, even if neither their comic 'nor their CC trinkets 'nor their affliction barks from DD1 imply anything even remotely of the sort. It's purposeful (and, to my view, pointless) grimdarkification, 'cause, y'know the sequel's gotta go bigger - darker - _more_ edgy, _MORE_ depressing! _MORE!!!_
Honestly speaking, I like Red Hook's approach on expanding Vestal's backstory. It's not about sex is bad or love is bad. It's about the consequence of it, which might affect other people's life. She's not guilty of love or guilty of her curiosity. But, the consequence of her actions affects her fellow sisters, who pay with their lives.
The backstory also explain her wrathful expression. Is she angry with the light for saving only herself but not her sisters? Is she angry with herself for failing to realize the consequences? Or is she angry with the abbot or the torturers who torture her and murder her sisters?

For this she was tortured and the poor girl(s) who were taken advantage of were given the traditional punishment for breaking their voew of chastity. All at the behest of a hypocrit. Wrath indeed. In DD2 Shrine, letting the flame runs out is the lose condition. Also, in the end of chapter 2, they don't show the flame runs out when Vestal satisfies her curiosity for the 3rd time. Even The Academic proclaims explicitly that she's not guilty: "No divine punishment awaited her - It was her captors who had strayed from the light!"

I feel like if they did add the flagellant, his story would pick up with the fight with the vestal that you would purposefully need to lose, and he would either be thrown out of the abbey for failing to stop her or leaving after being defeated, enlightened by the new pain she brought him during the fight.
He would be so cool in the DD2 engine! Imagine being able to transfer negative tokens to him with suffer to get a better heal off of indiscriminate science, or giving him a crit token to get that juicy 5-turn exsanguinate bleed, or going reclaim into cauterize to cure the bleed and heal him… he has so much potential
I would be curious to see how he operates in the second game. Because didnt he gain buffs the lower health he was? You heal naturally while in the carriage so that would make him difficult to use in that respect. Maybe he could be a more token reliant character like the Occultist
I don't think that this is necessarily THE Flagellant, I think that this is A Flagellant. They're an entire faction within the Church of Light and there's canonically more than one, but there's only one canonical one with the background from his comics.
Quite surprising to see Flagellant there. Now, was it the same flagellant or just another member of that "faction" of the church? "To love is natural - I am guilty of nothing!" But her actions caused the death of her sisters, sadly... another backstory that was executed perfectly well, Red Hook just keep knocking it out of the park with these.
And that shrinks the list of missing characters to: Crusader Musketeer Arbalest Houndmaster Shieldbreaker Abomination Honestly I don't think Flagellant will be a playable character. He'll more likely receive Antiquarian's treatment and become a mini-boss. It's hard to say about the rest of heroes but I do hope my precious whistling boi makes it back
The story was going great, except for the final chapter. I don't know if they were looking for the last punching blow, but I don't understand how these girls were not given equal punishment for basically letting one of them break the rules. I'd argue Junia deserved the harshest punishment since she was the one who peeked outside the window. Unless chapter 4 WAS supposed to be her death, that still doesn't explain how much guilt her sisters had. What did they do to deserve this? Did Junia tell them what she saw? I thought abbot already caught her the day she commited the crime, both in the comic and shrine. If the reason is that the whole church is insane... that's still a weak reason. I would like a more in debth explanation of why things happened this way, just so I don't have to question this in the first place.
The punishment for Virgin Vestals that broke their vows was to be walled in and to starve to death so her entire sisterhood got punished for her curiosity. A good reason to seek redemption or death in the Darkest Dungeon, she blames herself for their slow and painful deaths.

She refused to be broken by any of the abbot’s punishments, so took his anger out on the others. The title of the last shrine, “wrath”, has two meanings: the abbot’s wrath against her for daring to side with the light instead of the church, and her wrath against his callous and unjust punishments
Julia’s punishment was stated to be basically for showing it to the congregation. The others weren’t “worth” the extra time and torture the abbot planned for her so they just walled them in.

In his hypocracy, the abbot sentenced the vestal to torment, but the deed was now done and the secret revealed, so he doubled down and punished the other sisters for their 'sin' against their vows to God. A man in a robe, claiming communion with the Divine. Madness. As for best boy flagellant, he likely realised the part he played in this and sought punishment himself in his own particular ways.

Honestly a little disappointed with this backstory. I feel like they could’ve done so much more with it, like making her a lesbian who was punished for that. But she was sent to be tortured and had all her sisters killed because she… looked out a window? It’s not a very compelling story.
Beyond the main sin being her letting the flame go out instead of just being the peeping, there’s also a fun theory going around that she accidentally caught the abbot in an affair, since she lives in a walled commune and there aren’t exactly that many other men that coulda been in the courtyard. As such, it’s less her being punished for her sins and more the abbot desperately trying to save face

Junia (the vestal that we follow) is a vestal virgin priestess who has two rules beaten into her head : 1. Taking a vow of celibacy ,those who broke their vow will be considered impure 2.never let the sacred flame be extinguished Allowing the sacred fire to die out was a serious dereliction of duty and one shall be whipped And as we see since she failed the second one due to watching 2 people making out she was punished for bringing bad omen by letting fire went out.

The story was going great, except for the final chapter. I don't know if they were looking for the last punching blow, but I don't understand how these girls were not given equal punishment for basically letting one of them break the rules. I'd argue Junia deserved the harshest punishment since she was the one who peeked outside the window. Unless chapter 4 WAS supposed to be her death, that still doesn't explain how much guilt her sisters had. What did they do to deserve this? Did Junia tell them what she saw? I thought abbot already caught her the day she commited the crime, both in the comic and shrine. If the reason is that the whole church is insane... that's still a weak reason. I would like a more in debth explanation of why things happened this way, just so I don't have to question this in the first place.

The punishment for Virgin Vestals that broke their vows was to be walled in and to starve to death so her entire sisterhood got punished for her curiosity. A good reason to seek redemption or death in the Darkest Dungeon, she blames herself for their slow and painful deaths.

You’re exactly right, the punishment doesn’t make sense - that’s the entire point. She refused to be broken by any of the abbot’s punishments, so took his anger out on the others. The title of the last shrine, “wrath”, has two meanings: the abbot’s wrath against her for daring to side with the light instead of the church, and her wrath against his callous and unjust punishments
Julia’s punishment was stated to be basically for showing it to the congregation. The others weren’t “worth” the extra time and torture the abbot planned for her so they just walled them in.
@@MaelraJade The impression I got was that she likely caught the abbot and one of the sisters doing the deed. In his hypocracy, the abbot sentenced the vestal to torment, but the deed was now done and the secret revealed, so he doubled down and punished the other sisters for their 'sin' against their vows to God.

As for best boy flagellant, he likely realised the part he played in this and sought punishment himself in his own particular ways.

Honestly a little disappointed with this backstory. I feel like they could’ve done so much more with it, like making her a lesbian who was punished for that. But she was sent to be tortured and had all her sisters killed because she… looked out a window? It’s not a very compelling story.
The distraction caused the holy flame to be extinguished, that should have been obvious.
Beyond the main sin being her letting the flame go out instead of just being the peeping, there’s also a fun theory going around that she accidentally caught the abbot in an affair, since she lives in a walled commune and there aren’t exactly that many other men that coulda been in the courtyard. As such, it’s less her being punished for her sins and more the abbot desperately trying to save face

Junia (the vestal that we follow) is a vestal virgin priestess who has two rules beaten into her head :
1. Taking a vow of celibacy ,those who broke their vow will be considered impure
2.never let the sacred flame be extinguished Allowing the sacred fire to die out was a serious dereliction of duty and one shall be whipped
And as we see since she failed the second one due to watching 2 people making out she was punished for bringing bad omen by letting fire went out.
