- Bill Frisell was literally the first artist we called when we started planning our Fretboard Summit (fretboardsummit.com). This November, he'll be performing alongside David Crosby, Bryan Sutton, Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge and Blake Mills at the festival.
During a recent Summit planning session, we heard Frisell knock out "Happy Trails" and knew we had to turn the cameras on. Here he is, playing the classic Roy Rogers tune on a Waterloo WL-14 (x-braced) guitar. Look for this tune on a future Frisell recording project...
The Fretboard Summit takes place November 6-8, 2015 at the Costanoa Resort. Along with plenty of world class musicians, we'll feature talks and lectures from some of the biggest names in guitarmaking, interactive exhibits, music clinics and more. Among the speakers: Bill Collings, Dana Bourgeois, Paul Reed Smith, Dick Boak (Martin Guitars) and Richard Hoover (Santa Cruz Guitar Co.).

it's funny how bill always sounds like bill regardless of the instrument he's playing, there's always that intriguating tone quality !
a song you've heard a million times and bill can almost bring you to tears with the way he plays it. my favourite player by a mile.
I love this man. He's a big sweetie!!
Bill always plays the sweetest guitars!
that was so wonderful! im almost in tears. what a quiet unasuming peice of art
Beautiful.
I love Bills smooth, but halting style. There’s something brilliant about it.
I think this is a great comment--"smooth but halting." It's a wonderful compliment, I think.
The word you're looking for is Frisellian. LOL
Wow!
Beautiful!
what a guy...
wonderful playing and what a beautiful guitar!
He does it
I read where Bill now lives in Ballard. That's where I grew up. My cousin and I used to roll down the grassy knolls at the Hiram M. Chittenden locks when we were kids.
+camp parson's sunday school Bill does live nearby and the Fretboard Journal is based here as well. If you haven't been to Ballard in a while, you may not recognize it!
Fretboard Journal good or bad? I've heard Seattle has taken a turn for the worse? Shame, it' was such a beautiful city.
I want that guitar!
+Doeke Bekius i want these hands :-)
I want his hands also.
you take a plastering but you keep on mastering :v
Isn't this the same sort of guitar Julian Lage played for Acoustic Guitar sessions?
+jajaboomers Yep, Collings Waterloo.
+Fretboard Journal Different bracing though!
Is this the ladder or x braced?
The guitar in this video has X-bracing.
Thank you so much!
Sounds like a sad good-bye to Bill Collings.....
I work with people at death...I play this. Sometimes we sing it. It's very sweet, calming and healing.
Does anyone intentionally see David Crosby play guitar? I've seen him strum but nothing ever close to remarkable. Fight me.
I saw Crosby at the Fretboard Summit. His guitar playing on Deja Vous, at least, was unique and remarkable.
When and where
So rare to hear a guitar play a melody. Melody is now a dirty word. What happened to music?
not even Bill can make this boxy crap waterloo sound good
Have you ever played a Waterloo?
