  • Sandra lives in Kansas and has done an incredible job organizing and inventorying her preps. In this video, we review Sandra's spreadsheet inventory and help her to find areas where she may improve. Quite frankly, there aren't a lot of them. Sandra is doing a great job! We greatly appreciate her example and willingness to share her progress with us!

The one thing I would add, and not just for Sandra, is to be careful with who you talk to about what you have stored up. I had a friend, that I thought knew better than to talk about my preps, announce at a small dinner party of people I hardly knew, what all I do have. One guy said, "Wow, I know where I'm going when SHTF." I said with a very serious face that I wouldn't be home that day. 😶 The same people that think it's CRAZY, will be the most desperate when it does hit the fan!!

The garage door. My husband and I slipped a screwdriver into a hole in the rail of the door. If there isn't a hole to place a screwdriver, you can drill one in. Our door had one. It basically acted like a deadbolt. It stopped the door from going up.

She talked about needing soil for the new grow boxes and also having a bunch of limbs and trees blown down. Fill the bottom 1/3 - 1/2 of the grow boxes with branches then it will take much less soil. As the branches decay it will provide additional nutrition for the plants also.

For exterior security lighting mount them so they do not shine into your eyes as you look outside. Also locate them so they can’t be easily reached and diverted by a bad guy.
From an insurance adjuster’s experience, if someone wants in your house/building they can get in. Reinforce door jambs and the bar across the door is a great improvement.
Many forced entries are made through windows. If you have single hung windows or double hung windows the methods of security is different. Ask your dad for help. There are several other types of windows but the single or double hung windows are most likely what you have.
It appears Sandra is rather serious about self security and she should be congratulated.

I might also look into canning proteins. I know that she’s making good use of a freeze dryer, but that will also increase her need for water to rehydrate food for consumption. By learning to can proteins, she can take advantage of sales, get ready to eat protein shelf stable, and these cans will have liquid in them that can be used to help rehydrate freeze dried items.

Yep! Cook your rice, noodles, potatoes in those juices! I also keep a supply of vegetable broth and chicken bone broth. We kicked covid's butt with chicken bone broth with garlic and ginger plus some sea salt. Both are anti-bacterial and anti-viral. 2 cup mug, once every night and in 3 days it was gone. I used the garlic and ginger paste in a tube that you can buy in the veggie section of the grocery store. Now I keep several tubes on hand and add it too whatever I am cooking.

She seemed uncomfortable about her preps but she should be CONFIDENT in all that she has done within her means. It is hard when it is only one person. Great Job.

I love dogs! But They can also be a liability. Barking when you don't need them to bark. Feeding them. And their health care as well can become an issue too. Before my Boxer became sick with DCM I was training him to take things out of my hand (ex. using a stick to be a gun) on command only. Use a word that is likely to not be used. I used the word "Tickety" He was big and strong as were my Standard Poodles. They were just as protective as my Boxer. My Max, Standard Poodle could leap fences, and run down rabbits and bring them home to mom. 🤢

I am not a fan of the glo-sticks. Besides being a one-time use only item, the ones that I have had didn't have a long storage life. I love my candles, but sometimes they aren't appropriate, so everyone in the house has their own head lamp and led lantern in their room
Plus the led rechargable driveway lights are great around the house too. I am currantly in the proccess of switching over our stsndard battery lights to all rechargeable leds for longer life spans. With all of that said, I do still keep a few light sticks around. They offer great entertainment value for kids of all ages when the lights go out...lol

This was a pleasant surprise to see an interview with someone from Kansas. My wife and I moved to east central Kansas 6 years ago after living in Las Vegas most of our lives to be near our daughter and her family. We started pursuing emergency preparedness about 2 years ago with help in part from you tube resources like Jonathan and Kylene (and others). Go get that Ham license. I obtained my Technician license at the beginning of February and passed my General three weeks age, glad to hear that your parents assisting in that effort. We are doing many of the same things that you are doing for prepping. Freeze Drying, storing canned goods, multiple of sources of cooking. Solar Generator, Gas/Propane Generator. I joined the TACDA organization that Jonathan and Kylene are part of. We will be getting EMP Shield devices installed in our house and cars soon. Ironically, they are a Kansas company based in Burlington about 40 miles from my house. Good luck and Best Wishes

I loved listening to Sandra. She reminds me a lot of where I was a decade ago. My biggest recommendation for her is to continue to prep for severe weather based on her location. I love that she's got her go bag. Expand to a kit in her car. Also, taking a hiking trip and going camping to practice using those items in her bag will give her an idea of what she needs and doesn't need should she be without her home in case of flood or tornado.

This was a very interesting conversation! A few things came to mind. One of my issues is also storage for my propane and butane canisters. I don't have a shed, so that continues to be a work in progress. Something that's really helped me is to use the voice memo app on my phone. I always write the best buy or freeze date on my stored food/meds. The voice memo app lets me go through my stores easily bit by bit. I try to do each storage area (pantry top shelf) at least every 6 months. I have lists and once they're created, it's just an update so I can track what needs to be used. Updating my list from the previously recorded update is a piece of cake! I use this for my first aid as well as food. Sandra is an inspiration with the ham radio. I read a book, but haven't taken it any further. She's done so much in 3 years!

I would have a back up plan, a hard copy of such important information. When grid goes, most of the trusted apps will crash! I would invest in an old fashion basic tape recorder and play your updated voice notes in the recorder as a backup.

FWIW, 2025 is a solar maximum year. I'd expect some power down challenges just from solar storms. Chicagoland saw an entire day a week ago with G3 solar storm warnings: that's enough to fry your computer and tv. So I unplugged the computer and tv, and made sure the battery backups were charged. Kept my phone topped up with a little Anker solar charger so I wouldn't miss any news, but it still wasn't connected to the electrical system. I feel like part of prepping is carefully considering just how much response any given issue merits.

Well Sandra is doing great considering she is doing it herself. Slow and steady wins the race. Some others I am sure have shared this but motion lights on the side of the houses of your concern. Motion light at the garage door is another good one as someone trips it and it will light up that area. I have solor motion light. As far as glow sticks they also make battery ones and I got deals on them so I bought like 3 8 packs. Having a way to block light from shining out of your house will be important if something happens and your not moving so people wont see you as a target. About the garage door many options if your leaving home or going away I would think about is bolt or as somoene said tire iron or piece of metal in the track. One trick I seen many many years ago was vice grips on the track and clipped a way to prevent it from lifting. Another thing to think about is how are you getting out so the power out do you have manual pull level for the garage door also and make sure it works so if you need to open it you can. Another thing you can do is keep hat and gloves in your car along with emergency blanket for each seat. This would allow you a way to stay arm and such depending on time of year. Just my little 2 cents.

Ladies should make their own pepper spray. Use several ghost peppers. Chop them up (wear protective gloves) simmer for about 15 - 20 minutes and let cool. Stain the pepper juice through a mesh strainer lined with a coffee filter or paper towel. Pour the strained liquid into a common spray bottle or an old windex bottle. Keep a roll of paper towels new the door with the spray. When someone comes you can greet them with these two items in your hands as if you have been cleaning. If someone gets aggressive do not hesitate to use it. They won't be able to breath or see once you have sprayed them. Just be careful the wind isn't blowing in your direction! If you have animals keep the bottle covered with plastic and rubber band. Dogs most likely will not bother it as they can smell through the plastic. But take precautions with animals and kids.

    • @q-man762
      @q-man762 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Water extinguisher is probably the best as dry chemical and CO2 do not penetrate burning material well or cool it. A water extinguisher is refillable and pressurized with a air hose or better quality manual pump.

If you buy a fire extinguisher and have never used one before. You need to go to a fire station and ask if they can show and tell you how to use it. Check with the fire department what type of fire extinguisher would be best to keep in your home, cars. The kitchen extinguisher maybe a totally different type of extinguisher then other you may need. But, please learn how to use all the fire extinguishers they encourage you to have.

I really wasn't looking at her lists, but I was listening to what you all were saying. What I didn't hear was anything about medical needs. OTC meds, prescription meds, first aid items, first aid book (I have one from the red cross from a semester of red cross training). As far as cooking goes the rocket stove is a more prudent means of cooking about 3 to 4 weeks after grid down. There is a video on YT on how to build a rocket stove from gardening bricks. Super cheap and super east. Save your power, gas for days you can't cook out. IMHO the first 3 to 4 weeks are going to be the most dangerous. So I am at the point now of planning on some door replacements and added security measures. I have thought about hiring a specialist in security to help implement effective security measures. Also a tip for the raised beds. They dry out much faster than in ground planting. add some COIR to your soil. It will help to keep your soil moist longer. Coir is coconut hair. Solor spotlights on each corner of your house is a good idea. Get the motion detector type. Also think about pest control. Don't neglect your attic or crawl space. . Get bait blocks that kill mice and catch Master traps for roaches and other bugs. Even though we spray we still end up with bugs that fly in, they too are attracted to the catch master traps. then we also bought some for moths. they release a hormone that kills the males and the females die off if not able to breed. We had a terrible problem with moths and the hormone sheets worked great. Since you will be gardening cabbage moths are a real problem. You may need to get garden netting for your garden bed as the cicadas with be a real plague this year eating everything in sight. Ducks, chickens, and geese eat these critters and will provide a lot of fertilizer for you. don't WORRY IF THE ANIMALS roam through the gardens, they are good for the soil once the plants are big enough the birds won't bother them. Geese are a great protector of ducks and chickens. most cities allow 3 of each but hey whose counting when the cicadas are so numerous the car windows will be covered in them. We all must assume power will be down and no water unless you have a well and a septic tank. Do some research on what to do with your "chamber pot". There is just so much to think about! I have encouraged everyone to plan on 3 years. And do not plan on the government to rescue you. Oh and water. You can get water bobs. they hold up to 80 gallons in your bathtub. You can use one-gallon mylar bags to safely store water in a cool location. I hope some of this is something to get the wheels turning about your own situation. Also you may want to get some exterior doors for the interior rooms of your house. Another simple idea is a rubber stopper at the foot of your door just below the doorknob and don't forget about that heavy furniture. If you don't have wood flooring buy some cheap furniture gliders under that chest of draws in advance to push against a door. The door security device mentioned on the show is a good idea, but I WOULD HAVE 2 ONE AT ABOUT 5 FT AND one at knee level.
Also Pray, Pray, Pray! Do acts of penance several times a week. Do what you don't like to do and give up doing what you like to do. This is an act of love to God the Father as atonement for sin. Face it, we are all sinners and desperately need all of the Divine Protection that Heaven is clambering to dispense upon His children. And those strangers? Ask God to keep the bad guys at bay and to send those who will not bring harm. There will be so many opportunities to many acts of charity for the love of God. I have extra ramen noodle and oatmeal and a few other thing just to help someone get through another few day. Showing acts of kindness and mercy just may convert those on the edge of committing a crime against you or someone in your neighborhood. Have an image of Jesus, Divine Mercy on your doors. We also have blessed our property with Holy Water and exorcized salt mixed together. At each corner of our property we buried a Miraculous Medal and a St. Benedict medal as We blessed our property lines. Blessing your property is a wonderful thing as you are entrusting your house and home to Our Lord. He wants all of us not just an occasional prayer. A tornado went through our neighborhood and house property was untouched save one pine needle in our window screen. Our neighbors that touch our property had no damage on the adjoining property lines. I pray for our neighborhood and our city and our state. The tornado only took down trees and laid them away from people's houses!
i go to the Shrine of Divine Mercy YT site and pray the Holy Mass, The Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Holy Rosary daily. I have also watched all of the "Explaining the faith" series and more. I have learned so much! It is very true, that when you hear someone speak the truth, you truly know it is the truth without a doubt. GN and God Bless you all!

@@elwiub Thanks but it was going through Ice Storms with no heat or food for 10 days one year. The next time we were hit with an ice storm I lived in a house that had a gas stove to cook on. We had a basement and used the kerosene heater to keep the whole house warm! Heat rises! I started buying camping equipment just for Ice Storms LOL. Before that I went through a very hard time. I ate ramen noodles every day for 6 months. They were 10 cents a pack back then - it's all I could afford. I learned how to pressure can my garden veggies (green beans and tomatoes) Then I learned how to pressure can my soup recipes. Then I moved onto learning how to can meats. my chicken ended up mushy for some reason but my other meats turned out fine. I took advantage of whatever was on sale. We have more ice storms than snow. I live in the south and whenever there is a report for bad weather the people here buy out all of the milk and bread. Milk and Bread? IDK! I kept my refrigerated foods cold by using juice bottles with water in them frozen days ahead of time. The frozen water bottles (use whatever you have that is strong) and place them on the top shelf of the fridge. Cold air sinks! If you are going to use the bottles as a source to store water, make sure you clean them very well and let them dry out. Check to see if you can smell anything like soap or the actual liquid that was originally in the bottle. You don't want any left-over odor. For the freezer leave an inch to inch and a half of head space at the top. Ice expands. If you want to know about other topics or ideas, you can reply with your questions.

Speaking to her wanting a vaccum sealer or sealing items because its just her.
I have a vaccum sealer then up graded to a chamber vacuum sealer a few years back.
I love experimenting with food. Over the last month I have opened 2 different packages of tea that I had vaccum sealed 4 yrs ago...no issue ...
.over the last 6 months I have been working my way through several jars of natural peanut butter that has a best before date of August 2021 and no issues with it. I have 3 more jars to eat.
I opened a package of chocolate chips that I had vaccum sealed just over 3 yrs ago...still decent and edible...not as tasty as new but good. Was a little surprised they had all bloomed.
I ate walnuts and pumpkin seed 18 months past best before and no issue.
My next test comes mid summer as I will open a vaccum seal bag of almonds 3 yrs past its date.
And I will be finishing up my flour (100lb) that I had vaccum sealed into 3lb packages by end of the month. They were all 3 yrs old and made wonderful bread. And it was the same for the almond flour except I kept that in its original packaging and 2 yrs past its date made tasty keto bread with it.

Pump for water storage. We buy a small Drummond water transfer pump to pump water out of our totes (plastic square thingy with the metal tube around it), for about $70. Rain water comes off of our barn and into various totes by means of rain gutters, and we have many pieces to get the water into various totes. To remove the water, we have a series of connections (PVC) to reduce the big outflow on the tote to a garden hose and I run 300' of hose out to the garden. Now, I do not let any of this freeze. The tanks aren't getting water now, it's snowing, and in fall, I drain everything and bring the pump inside. Also, I do not let this pump get wet. I put a bucket or something on it to keep it dry rather than remove it all the time. And, yes, I have two pumps. But, before I got a pump, I had a hose on the bottom without the pump in between it and the tank, and just used gravity to fill a plastic tote in a wheelbarrow and get the water out to the garden. It's a BIG garden, but I didn't mind the exercise. Also, I only water the rows of plants, I try not to get water in between where the weeds will take advantage. Good for you Sandra for thinking of your future!

Baking powder. Store bought often goes stale rather fast because it has additive, like some starch. So, long term saving it can be a problem? Starches often take up moisture from room and it adds to it going off faster. You can test it, like soda by adding some to warm water a day see if it sizzles, and if it doesn't, you need to change it out.
However, if you buy citric acid and baking soda instead, the citric acid stays usable far longer due being in form of larger crystals and baking soda by itself stays fresher longer as well. I keep mine in air tight glass yars. Plus, if they are separate, you can use them in wider spectrum of things than just having the baking powder.
For baking powder, you use 1:1 ratio of both, acid goes into liquids or egg whites and baking soda is added to the flour or dry ingredients. You can also replace citric acid with vinegar and it will work.
Sorry for the monolog, but if you plan for long term storage, this might be better option.

Burying buckets of food and putting a certain plant over each spot in case I forget where they all are. Planting ‘weeds’ and flowers in the front yard where people can see and probably have no clue that the ‘weeds’ are edible or medicinal. Ha!
