  • The Sai Anantam Ashram was founded in 1983 by Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, on sacred and serene land in the Santa Monica Mountains of Agoura, California.
Through the years, a multi-ethnic and multi-generational spiritual community emerged. One of the high points of this very special and loving environment took shape on Sundays, when Alice, also referred to as Swamini or Turiyasangitandanda by her family and students, would lead the community in a musical ceremony. Swamini took traditional Sanskrit chants and mantras, along with original compositions, and interwove them with her gospel roots, classical training, and dynamic avant-garde harmonics to create an extraordinarily powerful and unique sound.
In the spring of 2017, film-makers Vincent Moon and Priscilla Telmon were invited to make a contemporaneous portrait, of this very welcoming and beautiful spiritual community, which included speaking with some of the community's elders, as well as Alice's sister, singer Marilyn McLeod.
The Sai Anantam Ashram’s temporal location ceased at the end of 2017, and sadly all of its buildings were destroyed in the California wildfires of November, 2018.
However, the spirit and essence of the Ashram continues, and the work of Swamini Alice Coltrane Turiysangitananda still keeps spreading.
    Om.

Hello and Pranam, I'm writing this all the way from Calcutta, India to let you know how profound, sublime and intense an effect Swamini's music has on me. How could one blend Kirtana and Gospel so immaculately? I do not know. Gorgeous video, and the music? So, so powerful! I love kirtan and bhajan and jazz too and I learnt about her a year ago when I heard the piece Turiya and Ramakrishna. What a piece! And now, this!! Truly, she was a divine soul, I wish I had been there but you know what? The music just took me to where you guys were chanting. Awesome, awesome, awesome. My deepest respects to all of you.

👍🏻 the Calcutta born saint from your very country India had been instructed by his guru Śrīla Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur to go to the West and preach harinam sankirtan to the people there. His countrymen could not accept his dynamic revolutionary honest plain and child like mercy. He had to travel to NYC by cargo ship, during which 35 day journey at age 70 he suffered 2 nearly fatal heart attacks. Now he is very familiar and famous in almost every country in the world.
How amazing that the two bit pieces of glass are taken to be diamonds. A real diamond can not be purchased by the ordinary person, so they settle for cut glass. But that doesn't make the diamond any less valuable because so many delusional souls have accepted an illusory thing as real.
The mission of Śrīla Prabhupada is to make every soul Happy, and once we are all happy, there will be peace between brother & sister in Krishna's family. I sincerely beg to offer the treasure house of Vedic wisdom via a cost free library : vedabase.io please have a love feast reading even a few pages.
      Hare Krishna, sincerely, a friend.

I lived in LA in the 80s and occasionally saw Alice on public access tv. Today I realize I should have been at this place every week, but I was too young and unable to realize it at the time. Thank you for recording this.

The music is indeed beautiful.... In spite of such a plastic imitation cheating baba as Indian born Sai Baba. Alice was very humble and her vibration is to respect to one & all, but Sai Baba is no match for her!
Actually the great maha mantra came to America not by any superficial guru, but by the cosmic and transcendental transcontinental passage across the Atlantic (on a cargo ship) to NYC in 1965 by the one and only Abhay Caranaravinda Swami Bhaktivedanta 108 Śrīla Prabhupada Mahārāja.
