Thank you! On my dance journey I'm trying to not only learn the steps but as gelsey Kirkland said "use [my] mind and try to become an artist" an artist is committed and this summary is the wake up call to make the creative and artistic process a part of my everyday life!
Rituals, rituals, rituals. I am the "ritual" girl! Building the system and creating the habit of doing something is my road to success! I am became good at it through out the years and my challenge the last years was to learn 1.how to take inspired action, 2. how to let it go! I am on the right path I believe.
I received emails from you for awhile and never open it. Today, my task was to unsubscribe to all emails unwanted from any sources. I guess you know the rest of the story. Not only i listened to you but watched several of your notes. Well done ! To the point. Thanks to read all those books and summarize it . Talk later . By the way you are my first post ever in this world of electronics . :)
Diane Beaucaire Well that gives me a big smile, Diane! I'm honored to be a part of your life and so great to be the beneficiary of your first post ever in this world of electronics! :) Here's to many years of optimizing and actualizing together! :)
my big idea ... kick start your mind with your body ! .... & Rituals are the essence of creativity ...Great ideas .. Thanks Brian for those wonderful insights !

Hi Brian, I love Tharp's work and I am an artist and highly creative person.. so, I was pleased to watch this.. but, I found some of it a little hard core. Yes, I know as you say to "crush it" we have to be totally committed and form habits, but it saddens me to think that Mozart's hands were deformed at the age of 28 even though the world would not be the same without his music. And I think there is a healthy time and place for healthy distractions. I think agree that it becomes a problem when it takes over the entire day and most people including myself have a hard time setting limitations. But, sometimes distractions are healthy or at least in my opinion. I want to aspire to your greatness and I think you are doing great.. but rules can be rigid and art is not rigid. That's the spirit of artistic creation.. there are no rules. So, I agree with many of the things said here, I just think there has to be room for the unknown. I am trying to form habits and struggling, but I know I am a rule breaker at heart and part of that characteristic has made me the artist I am today. Now, I want to listen to Mozart.. but it does make me sad to think he deformed his fingers.
Juliana Beasley You had me nodding my head, "YES!" until this: "That's the spirit of artistic creation.. there are no rules." Great artists first learn the rules. THEN they break them. :)
***** Well, I have to say a lot of my favorite artists were mentally unstable.. sad, but true. And I might be another artist with an unstable mind. I need to think of the artists that inspire me and most of them go on the doom and gloom shelf that I had to take down years ago. I never learned the rules and that's why I am here. I did not have good role models to help me form the rules.. but somehow even despite my inner turmoil and lack of healthy boundaries, I have had some good success and two books published and almost a third. It's not that I would say my way is the healthy way.. I would not say that at all. But, somehow, I wonder how great artists like Gogol and Bulgakov could have made the art they did without the suffering. I am not promoting suffering. And I know how it feels to work so hard that I have passed my physical limitations and the rubber band has snapped. I have no deformed hands.. but I know what it means to work at something you care about and love so much that you put yourself second. And that's a big problem. I think I need a personal assistant. LOL!! Thanks for responding Brian. I am sad I won't be available for your conference call class tomorrow because I really need it. I really need this one. xo
Juliana Beasley :) To be clear: I'm not advocating working so hard you deform your hands (unless that's your thing. hah!). I'm just trying to make it clear that the people we admire worked *incredibly* hard and we don't honor our potential pretending they were just "born" great. Likewise, we're not helping ourselves by thinking we need to work nonstop. It's all about finding our own optimal rhythms and KNOWING we can if we diligently, patiently, persistently show up. P.S. Whole 'nother convo but I wonder what the crazy creators could have done with a consistent meditation practice, exercise and solid nutrition. ;) P.P.S. How's your consistency on your fundamentals? :)
***** OK, you just made me smile. No laugh out loud, but a definite smile on my face! And that's good. I need that. Consistency.. well, today is day one on getting out and semi-power walking with my dog, Howard. We had a good time and I listened to some good tunes on my iPhone. And that was helpful.. it just hard for me to start. I don't know if some artists can be balanced, Brian.. I really have a big question mark there and I'm not promoting that sort of behavior even though that is how I have worked.. and that is without regulation and without boundaries and without self-care. And yet, somehow, I have gotten good results working this way, but it isn't making me personally happy. And I'm not doing my photography for the bling and the rest of it. I am doing it because I actually feel compelled with rational reason or motivation.. or at least, I don't think so. So, yes, sticking to one fundamental and that is exercise. I really need it. So, thanks for asking me. I wonder if Anne Sexton would have written the way she did without all the insanity and melancholy in her words that touch so many people or at least me. Yes, I would rather know that she lived a happier life and did not kill herself at the end.. but madness and art often go together. Stability and mediocrity often go together too. Have you read Andrew Solomon's wonderful book, The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression. I think it needs to be on your list. It's amazing. I saw him speak and he was shaking and scared, but he did it and he is incredible. I sent you a PM through your site. I needed to talk to you privately about something. Thanks and thanks for making me smile. JBxxo
Juliana Beasley One more quick comment before I'm off to prep for my class: " I don't know if some artists can be balanced, Brian.. I really have a big question mark there" Really? There are a TON of creative people who are balanced and thriving and producing awesome stuff without being manic or depressed or killing themselves! lol. I think you'd *really* like Eric Maisel and his work. He's a therapist and creative coach. ALL about this: ericmaisel.com/ brianjohnson.me/interviews/why-smart-people-hurt/ brianjohnson.me/philosophers-notes/rethinking-depression/ brianjohnson.me/philosophers-notes/the-creativity-book/
Perfect video, super-useful! Nice to hear that about digging in the books! Still love old fashion books and especially digging and noting everywhere, it's awesome! but more expensive to buy books than the e-readers though :/
my distractions are there because I'm afraid I can't pull off what I've committed myself to.mainly an art project I'm doing for someone. always have the absolute fear factor to get over. have to train myself to not over think or think AT ALL. as Andy Worhol said, just GET IT DONE AND LET OTHERS DECIDE IF IT'S GOOD OR BAD.
Mary D Really? By whom? Laughing. The routine is what so many great creators/teachers describe as the container thru which creativity can flow! It's all an experiment. I certainly benefit from it personally. What has your experience been?!
***** I had a friend tell me recently not to be a slave to my schedule. I admit its pretty full on but I am able to tweak bits and pieces if I need to. I feel like without my weekly agenda/ to do list is get nothing done. I told someone I block in time for meditation/ stillness and they said it defeats the purpose
Mary De Alvia Sounds great! We want to have structure with flexibility. Here's a little video I did on that you might enjoy: th-cam.com/video/-mAV32V_AGI/w-d-xo.html And, blocking out time to ensure you do the things you have determined are important to you (such as meditation, creative work, time with your family, etc.) is the most powerful way to get it done. Anyone who says that's not a good idea hasn't thought too hard about it. :)
***** I really liked the '101' video each time I've seen it and I agree. I actually saw a webinar with Bob Proctor recently and he stated that routine is the killer of creativity (or something along those lines) so I am sort of confused
Mary D Thanks, Mary! I'd be curious to know more about what he said. Rituals and systems are HUGE for creativity. Perhaps he was meaning more "ruts" or... ? :)
Thank you! On my dance journey I'm trying to not only learn the steps but as gelsey Kirkland said "use [my] mind and try to become an artist" an artist is committed and this summary is the wake up call to make the creative and artistic process a part of my everyday life!

One this is missing though: you must love the discipline, art, or field you want to be great in.
Without love, labour is just labour.
