    That's a ton of useful information when I first started out fishing again this year I spoiled everything up with monofilament. The one thing mono is also good for its to learn how to use a baitcaster

    • @MailmanDownEDC
      @MailmanDownEDC 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s so true!!! Getting a birds nest with braid absolutely SUCKS!!!! I learned to throw a baitcaster using mono (actually, mono is all I had 40 some-odd years ago), so when I started teaching my son to throw a baitcaster, I made sure mono was spooled up on it. 😁

    I always run braid to a leader and change the leader accordingly to the body of water or lure. the best of both worlds, sensitivity and abrasion resistance

    TJ- Good summary of uses of each type of line. never realized that mono was considered a floating line. I've fished many a topwater on braid and didn't realize that the line was a sinking line. Thank you for pointing this out to me.

    Great video! As someone who has fished most of their life but took a break for years this video is very helpful. I haven’t really gone fishing until recently for about 5+ years and things have changed quite a bit! Thanks for the tips!

    This is a MUST watch & save video!!! I’m always guessing what line to use with what lure. Growing up, in the mid 70’s and early to mid 80’s, there was only Mono. I don’t know for sure if Fluoro was around back then and I was only concerned with what pound test to use in Mono. If I remember correctly, I pretty much used 10-12 pound test. Now, with 3 types of the most common lines, Mono, Fluoro and Braid, it’s nice to know which to use and which is best for what lure you want to use. Thanks for making and uploading this video!!! 😎👍

  • @Outdoor_Jack
    @Outdoor_Jack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I pretty much completely agree but my favorite type of line is fluorocarbon because most of the lures i use need fluorocarbon for crank baits, jigs, jerk baits, chatter baits, spinner baits, all that stuff i agree mono really gets put to the side cause better lines have come out and it's SO CRUCIAL to use fluorocarbon for crank baits and jerk baits but i agree there is a time and place for each and every type of line

    using a fluoro leader with braid is definitely better for hook up ratios for fish like walleye and crappie if you're using light gear. You don't pull the hook out of the fish's mouth as often b/c of the stretch. A sharp, sticky hook with nickel coating will also up your chances. Another plus side is that you can pop your bait out of snags easier.

  • @ecolbechz2750
    @ecolbechz2750 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great breakdown. Most people dont have multiple reels to keep all of the lines on them. I use braid with no leader. I might catch more by using a leader or floro but I have caught fish that guys have waited their whole lives to catch, without a problem. I do fish mostly stained water. For depth control I just crank slower. For my spinning set up i just use a lighter braid Just my 2 cents.

    I used fluorocarbon and braids lines in the 12lbs to 17lbs. I used braids lines that separated just above the knot. Spiderwire separated badly every time I tied a lure. I also wet the line before I tighten the knot. Fluorocarbon I find it to stiff. The only fishing line I use is the Sufix siege mono 12lbs and 14lbs I have two Quantum smoke S3 baitcaster and Quantum smoke rod with micro line guides. Reel weights in at 6.9 oz. Rod is also very lite

    I use 80 lb monofilament with a steel leader and a #16/0 hook for trout. First, I find a fisherman who has already caught fish and I buy a live trout off 'em (really you can use bass, walleye, cat or anything as long at they are no less than 12"). I hook it through the nose and send it flying off with all my might. Sometimes the hook rips right through, but with good technique, I have kept them on my line and get a good 75 yards (you can always tell if you lose one if the fish flies like a boomerang at a hurdling speed in the wrong direction). I still haven't caught a trophy, but when I do, I expect to set a record.

    So for a baitcaster, my understanding is that they primarily like mono, but is it reasonable to use most of your line as mono, then the last few yards of line as flouro?

  • @megastick9324

    I’m not a pro, I use mono. From casting the flats to digging grouper. Mono and a leader. With a float or a heavy weight , mono and a leader. We eat a lot of fish. If I was a tourney guy, probably be different.

    I still use mono more than anything else . Better for abrasives and good mono casts better . I mainly use braid as a filler . I fish a lot , so usually change out mono about ever 3 months . I seem ti catch more fish using mono over braid . A little over 50 years of fishing . I average about 14 hours a week or more fishing year round .

    Hi Sir I always use 50 pound Monofilament leaders & it is really Excellent once you wind on the 50 pound monofilament leader on to your reel you can fight the bigger once the fish gets up to the surface you know you are not going to lose that fish & Know it's worked for me as a few years ago I used 25 pound monofilament main line & the 50 pound monofilament leader & a Penn Rod & Penn 760 Live Liner reel Combo & I had 2 7/0 hooks on the line & 4oz running sinker & so when the fish picks up the big bait & the fish can run off with the bait as I've got the Lever Live Liner on & the Beauty of this reel also has a rear knob drag adjustment & I had that rear drag just set right so the fish runs off with the line the spool on the reel wouldn't over run the line around the spool & lose the the fish & this is exactly what happened when I caught a 19 1/2 pound Snapper & I had polly or what you called Pilchard for bait & this big Snapper just picked up the pilly & ran off with & my line was spooling out & just kept running off for awhile & then stop & then ran off again & then turned the handle on the reel & the fish was on & the front drag was set right as well & my drag wasn't set too high a drag setting & I was into a big fight with this big Snapper & the Penn Rod was well bent over as well but the fish could still take some line as well & when I had the chance I could wind the line in & my son Regan said to me a few times bring it in & yelled out to him I'm trying I'm trying its putting up a big fight & latter on my arms were getting tired to but I wasn't going to give up & still had pressure on the the fish & when I was able to wind on the 50 pound leader onto the reel I had a lot better advantage of getting the fish to the surface & my son Regan got the net & he couldn't believe his eyes how big the Snapper was & Regan even struggled with the net in getting the into the boat & finally got the fish in the boat & when the Snapper hit the floor of the boat the 2 7/0 hooks came out of the Snappers mouth as it must have been lipped hooked & just goes to show you don't need braid to catch big fish & my little strong Rod is a Okuma with over head reel & that has 65 pound braid 50 pound monofilament leader & so far I haven't caught big on this Rod yet & had some big hits but unfortunately they weren't hooked properly & I got a new Penn VI 6500 Live Liner reel & has 30 pound drag & has 4 Lever Live Liner settings & has a SAFETY FEATURE ON THIS PENN VI 6500 LIVE LINER REEL & YOU FLICK THE BAIL ARM OVER TO OPEN POSITION IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU TURN THE HANDLE ON THE REEL OVER & OVER THE BAIL ARM WON'T SLAM OVER TO CLOSED POSITION & I WISH I HAD THIS PENN VI LIVE LINER FISHING REEL YEARS AGO & I WOULD NOT HAVE ANY BREAK OFFS USING A SURF CASTING ROD & LOOSING MY 50 POUND SHOCK LEADER AS WELL AS A 5OZ SINKER & 2 7/0 HOOKS WITH BIG BAITS & AT ONE TIME DOING A PENDULUM CAST THE 5OZ SINKER NEARLY HIT SOMEONE AS THE SINKER WENT FLYING THROUGH THE AIR AT SPEED ALL BECAUSE THE OKUMA EGG BEATER REEL THE HANDLE ON THE REEL TURNED ON ME & SLAMMING THE BAIL ARM OVER TO CLOSED POSITION & BROKE THE LINE & WENT OVER TO THAT PERSON & TOLD THAT PERSON TO APOLOGIZE TO THAT PERSON & EXPLAIN TO THAT PERSON WHAT HAD HAPPENED I& WAS SHIT LUCKY THAT THAT 5OZ SINKER DIDN'T HIT THAT PERSON & THAT I WAS Shit Lucky & IT TAKES PENN TO DESIGN & MAKE THESE LIVE LINER REELS A SAFE REEL & MY SON REGAN HAS THE BIGGER PENN LIVE LINER REEL & THIS IS THE PENN VI 8500 LIVE LINER REEL &40 POUND DRAG & ALSO HAS THE SAFETY FEATURE ON THIS PENN REEL AS WELL & I GOT MY PENN VI 6500 LIVE LINER REEL FOR A CHRISTMAS PRESENT & DID WANT THE PENN VI LIVE LINER REEL BUT THAT WAS WAY MORE EXPENSIVE REEL & BOTH THE PENN 6500 & THE 8500 REES ARE FULLY SEALED FROM SALT WATER & THE PENN 760 LIVE LINER REEL HAS 20 POUND DRAG & I TOOK THE SIDE PLATE OFF & IT WAS STILL LIKE NEW INSIDE THE REEL JUST ADDED SOME MORE GREASE TO THE GEARS & THIS PENN 760 IS 9 PLUS YEARS OLD & STILL EVERY THING STILL WORKS ON THIS LIVE LINER REEL GOOD ON YOU PENN FOR DESIGNING & MAKING THESE EXCELLENT QUALITY FISHING REELS Kind Regards Peter &.have a nice day Sir
