English Female Kamui/Corrin is FINE.
Ignore my bellyaching if you love the English localization. SKIP THE DESCRIPTION, it's TOXIC if you like the localization.
Ever since the E3 trailers when I heard Kamui's default English voice with "I WON'T SURRENDER", I've had problems with the localization.
Then the name. And then the "I'm so sorry everyone... I feel like I have no choice but to..." monotone voice. Marx/Xander doesn't fit for that body type.
I might have disliked FE13′s English dub initially but that is attributed to the mere-exposure effect.
Awakening has quality, I feel. Fates seems like it’s dropped off in quality in the voice acting department since Awakening.
As a note: Elise's voice makes my ears bleed in both English AND Japanese. So while I don't like her English one, it's not exclusive to just English.
…though actually I found out something about the name “Corrin”:
“The name Corrin does have some symbolism attached to it; it’s a bastardized form of "Quirinus”, which is part of the name of the Roman god of choices, Janus Quirinus. “
…which is fine and all.
But it still sounds off.
Especially since your mother (spoilers or not) is from Hoshido… A JAPANESE inspired country with people with JAPANESE names.
Especially when “Kamui” means “divine” and says “HOLY SHIT I AM A DRAGON GOD THING WORSHIP ME”

It is really weird. I absolutely adore the Awakening Dub, to the point of replacing the Japanese version in my ears. But Fates? What the hell happened?!

+Donaldo alvares I think what happened here was that Kris Zimmerman (the voice director) had to do the SSB4 trailer on short notice. I mean, compare David Stanbra's voice and performance as Xander here in comparison to Fates. Not hard to tell by the performance which one he had more time to work with haha.

I don't play Fire Emblem but why did they change it? I don't really see people in America or Europe finding the name "Kamui" offensive.
I really hope Fates'll have a Japanese option. The localization seems to have Radiant Dawn as its role model... Alright maybe not that bad

I still hate the fact people complained another FE character got into Smash but personally I couldn't care less about the haters of Kamui/Corrin in Smash since they don't have the common sense of if you don't like it don't buy him he's DLC for a reason he's a choice to buy "Choice" being the key word here.
Either way it's still cool to see Kamui/Corrin make it into Smash and I'm grateful that Sakurai had made such content heavy games over the years when concerning Smash Brothers. Still wish some people would just get over the fact that Sakurai works his ass hard to please as many people as he can but he can't please everybody. Though thanks to Kamui/Corrin's inclusion in Smash my hype for Fates is already high enough as it is loved Awakening and I hope Fates can deliver on my hype good thing I've stayed away from Spoilers for the duration of it's JP release.

+ChillTerumi True though some of the hate towards the final DLC characters is rather petty. Heck I saw that someone made a petition to get Bayonetta out of smash and they literally labeled her as the usual insults females are harshly labeled with and for Bayonetta's case it's obvious.
+JadenXDemonMan the problem more is that fire emblem is over represented rather than the fact that they don't like him. If say he was the second fire emblem rep in the series people would welcome him with open arms.
Ainsley Harriott True but let's be honest how often is Fire Emblem is mentioned in Nintendo Gaming conversations before Awakening came out? I personally see the series as under appreciated lately. At least until Awakening came out and while I know that game pretty much is the most popular at least to my minor knowledge I do know some die hard fans of Awakening don't like it emphasis on some.
+JadenXDemonMan personally i give corrin a pass due to the fact I have a huge bias of dragons (never actually played a fire emblem game). But if I had the option to choose a series thats under represented in smash id probably choose F-Zero or Metroid

Okay, so now I can FINALLY know who's actually speaking here. So only Marx/Xander, Ryoma, Elise and Sakura speak. Good to know.
Thankfully Elise's REAL dub voice isn't as bad as this, which I could tell due to the "try to be... at peace" line from the english trailer sounding different to here.

I've noticed some name changes in important characters such as Marx to Xander, and it made me think of how story heavy characters like Chrom's name wasn't altered much. This makes me believe we won't be able to switch languages in the English versions... Any insight, Rey?

Names of not as important characters are shortened like Suzukaze to Kaze, Tsubaki to Subaki, etc.

How did they go from the amazing English Awakening had to this sub-par dub? Kinda strange how they thought the voices fit some of the characters or how they thought the voices sounded good. Really hope there is a Japanese voice option and it isn't bugged like it was for Awakening.

Tbh, I was really looking forward to the localization of Fates/IF since I thought Awakening did a great job. Even after hearing male Kamui's/Corrin's voice in the E3 trailer, I had high hopes for the rest of the cast, but then came Elise and Marx/Xander. Yeesh... I'm so disappointed...
getting used to the Japanese names and voices were fine for me when i heard the trailer I just disliked how they changed up the voices i mean the voices practically tell the personality of the characters so im gonna play with the Japanese voices cause i got too used to the Japanese voices

Cam Clarke, David Stanbra and Natalie Lander sounded pretty cartoony here compared to Fates. Where as they sounded pretty much prefect for the characters they portrayed in the game itself IMO.
I can't possibly be the only one who thinks Corrin/Kamui's final smash should be called "toilet flush"...
This is still my favorite character reveal. The music is just so epic.

+BigKlingy I know this comment is old but where did we "learn" this again? because if you listen to Ryoma, Sakura, Xander and Corrin. You can tell that they're DEFINITELY the same VAs in both the trailer and the game.
"They hired different VAs" just comes off as an excuse to defend the overall quality of the VO in the trailer IMO.
***** I'd read that they were different VAs. Bear in mind the actual game wasn't out at the time I made this video, and we didn't know the VAs.
They clearly rushed this one out though. That's the problem with Corrin being announced before the game was out in English. In the Japanese version, all the VAs already had experience voicing the characters by the time they made this trailer.
In the very small amount I've heard, I love female kamui's moans of "pain" in the Japanese version (insert Lenny face here)

Only thing I don't like about Kamui/Corrin is his neutral a attacks. Should've had him stabbing with the dragon fang repeatedly instead of biting really fast.

I agree. As soon as I heard Elise "he's my big brother!" I felt that it was very off and killed my hype a bit. I also dislike the name Corrin, his appearance, everything he says, and pretty much the character in general. I guess unlike with Robin i'll be maining the female version this time around.

When I said I hated the English dubbing it was really because Awakening had amazing voice acting so naturally had high expectations but then the voice acting seemed really off and some of the name changes made no sense I mean I understand shortening Suzukaze to just Kaze for the people who wouldn't know how to pronounce it but.... why did they have to change names that were already in English like Cyrus and Harold? Also is it me or do Ryouma and Marx both sound like Chrom in the English trailer!? o.o I could barely hear the difference between their voices
I agree the English voices aren't the best Xander's is a bit off and kamuis voice could of been better ( I prefer the name kamui as well ) but maybe Nintendo will prove us wrong and the voices will be better but for now when I get the English version I will play with Japanese voices

Kamui should have not been localized for smash. Kinda like how Roy and Marth have their Japanese voices. But i can play FE Fates just fine with English voices

Seriously, fuck that noise. Fates' Japanese lineup was so good, but the English dub has shown me way too much cringe. It's not even about "weeaboos liking Japanese audio more"; you can't deny the dub has some glaring issues.
Also, Lost In Thoughts Alone is okay, but doesn't hold a candle to if~Hitori Omou.

+xendingalot I think the issue comes in where people that like the dub, simply enjoy it despite having flaws here and there (hello Felicia,) though; thankfully the main cast averts that for the most part.
Then those people that like the Japanese voice acting are something along the lines of: "holy shit dub is trash tier and the japanese voices are 100% perfect in every way and have no flaws."
It's the contrast, one side acknowledges that their preferred option has flaws and doesn't shit on the other side like it's garbage, (the Dub fans,) while the Japanese fans act like the Japanese voices are 100% perfect and spend more time bashing the dub than anything else.
The thing is, even if the Japanese voice actors end up sounding "generic", their delivery is rarely ever awkward, especially since IS spent money to hire a cast that knows what they're doing, and even a few famous voice actors. So the voice acting is at least pleasant to listen to, even if there aren't many "unique" voices.
The dub on the other hand has weird delivery at times, most notably Felicia and male Corrin. Cringing while getting a crit kinda makes it less cool, y'know. What sucks is that the Awakening English cast did such a nice job, but now we have this.

Another thing that plays a massive part in it.
90% of the people who cry for Japanese voices... They have no idea what they're saying, and thus; have no idea if it's bad. I guarantee that they have no idea how to understand Japanese voices beyond a small handful of them.
I guarantee that the Japanese voice acting has bad voices here and there too, it's just never commented on because people don't *know* that the voices they can't understand have bad lines (that, and they assume "it's the original Japanese voices, that means it must be 100% flawless."
I will agree that it was a better dub in Awakening. I'm not totally sure what happened between then and now, but Awakening had a great dub. (Even saying this, Fates isn't bad on that front by any means, at worst it's average.)
Well ba da boom, I know Japanese, and played the Japanese version. Hisame, Hinata's son, has a really boring voice, but the same guy also voiced Donnel from Awakening and Hinata, so it's not really his fault imo. Other than that I can't think of anything bad.
I totally agree with you here. I don't get why with game localisation they have to change the name of the character. Who the hell cares. It's not like people change their names when they go to a different country. Be never been a fan of English voice acting in nom western media. Because in my opinion the essence, culture and everything that the games have become lost. Also most English voice actors sound too dramatic for my taste.
If they want to sound like an opera then they should change their careers.

Awakening's dub is superior to the smash trailer's laughable quality. Hell, we've heard Fates's actual dubbing, and it's insulting how the quality and voice actors were changed for this trailer.

While I don't think that the English dub is perfect (what is, when you think about it?), I still think it's a might bit too soon to be passing judgment since the game hasn't been released here yet.
The clips they showed probably aren't even the finalized takes. Besides, I've heard bad voice acting. This English dub is NOT bad. This is just the preliminary stage of people complaining about the dub, then when the game comes out, about 80% of that complaining gets diminished. It happens every time with stuff like this.
The problem is, I have a reference: Awakening. The Engish voice quality in the previous game, while I prefer Japanese, seems far superior than the English voices for Fates characters. I'd compare Fates's English voice "feel" quality to Radiant Dawn and Path of Radiance than Awakening.
I understand that. I just think it's too soon to start fully judging it based on the small clips we've heard. Still, I will agree it doesn't have the same feel as Awakening, but that was also going to be the final game in the series. They pulled out all the stops on that one. I can understand if they're being a bit more lax in certain areas with this new entry after the considerable amount of effort that went into the last game. It's not easy to pour your heart and soul into everything you make.
I agree that the English Awakening dub was far, FAR better than the Fates dub. The voices sounded like they had feeling put into them, hardly any lines are shared between characters, and the voices are overall enjoyable. Fates' cast is absolute crap compared to Awakening. Now, if only we could get a game like Awakening with GOOD animations...
