I have an FGX5. It sounds amazing. When I got it, I fell in love.. However, when I plugged it in, I found it to be unplayable because of the noise made by my fingers brushing the fake woodgrain pick guard. I also hated the feel of the material. I have sensory sensitivity from being on the autism spectrum. So it sat under my bed and I continued to play my beloved FG-441s. This may not bother most people, but it bothered me. Then I read online that the woodgrain is actually a sticker over a regular old black pick guard in most cases. I warmed it up with a hair dryer and worked my thumb in between the sticker and the pick guard and peeled. It came right off. This was on Christmas Day. It was like getting a new guitar. Now I can't stop playing it. Thanks for the video.
it really did/ Just find an edge of the sticker if your guitar has one, and gently peel. it was easy to feel where the sticker ended and the pickguard started on mine@@jasper_north
Thank you for the valuable tip. I much sooner the original black pick guard myself as well. Looks so much better and it certainly gives it that classic look too which is just a HUUUUGE bonus! Kinda like my schwang! Huuuge I tell ya! Ask anybody! 😂
I played the D18 also. I loved it but the Yamaha sounded better. I think if the D18 was about 20 years older it would probably sound as good. Thanks for watching
I can’t frikkin wait for mine to arrive! Ordered it yesterday! So, excited! My Dad owned and played an original, late 60’s, red label, FG-180 for 40 years before he was forced to retire it because the fretboard was so badly pitted from playing and gigging with it! Hi David. Here is my story. 25 years on my Takamine and I woke up one day and thought time for a new guitar. Nothing wrong with the Takamine. A very fine guitar. But, I thought I would treat myself. Been a long time. I looked at the Gibsons, Taylors, Guild, and all the other usual suspects. Then I stumbled upon the Yamaha. Played it and thought oh my goodness this is a beautiful guitar. How much? Half the price of the others. No brainer so I bought one. An absolute joy to play both in tonal quality, resonance, and that neck. Love everything about it. Oh yes, and its understated looks are real class also. Perhaps the Takamine will not see the light of day for a wee while.
Takamine?! Ugh! What a garbage guitar! Nothing personal but after owning 2 of them I can confidently call them absolute JUNK! I’ll put up ANY Yamaha acoustic guitar against ANYTHING Takamine has EVER manufactured! Sorry if I offend you. That’s not my intent! I just don’t like them. And they certainly could never hold a candle to any Yamaha guitar ever that’s for damn sure!
I just bought the FG3. Found it at my local music store here in Madison, WI. Took it to my Luthier and he did a setup and swapped out nut and saddle for bone. Absolutely fantastic guitar for the money!!!
Other than place of origin and a few minor things they're almost identical. Great guitar 🎸 I hope you enjoy it for many years. As you can tell I love mine. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
They are great guitars! Yamaha has a line of guitars above the red label called the custom series. They are truly custom shop guitars. If you ever get to play one, you will know what I mean. I bought the LS custom 3 years ago from Sweetwater and it is the best guitar that I have ever played. Everyone that plays it, wants to buy it from me. Even diehard Martin people, love my Yamaha. 👍
I was aware that was an oversight on my part. However it's my understanding the red label series comes from the same place. That's what I was implying. I have heard of them but never played one. Hopefully some day. Thanks for your comment and for watching. Pick on.
I managed to get a FGX5 this past Feb, Awesome guitar ,plays like butter and sounds great .I have a 1979 Larrivee L28 I bought new and it sounds great and plays good ,but i must say my new Yamaha is like it has been around for 40 yrs, a GREAT buy.
I just picked up the FGX5 at a used shop in downtown Osaka. Loving everything about it. Great acoustic volume and dynamics, and the pickup system sounds incredibly natural. It’s hard to find ways to explain how nice it is since it’s such a straightforward guitar. It’s just a really really good guitar. What else could you ask for 😂
Lol I forgot I had that on. Actually I own 97 Taylor 412 ce. I use it mostly when I do acoustic venues. I also use my Yamaha FSX5. I Love the older Taylors such as my 97. This was before the bean counters got involved. Thanks for watching

After constantly looking here in Canada for one and checking retailers daily, I finally found a new one out of Joliette Quebec….$2300 all in…I had the FGX3 and it was phenomenal but I sold it as I preferred my Yamaha LL16…I wanted the 5 and after 2 plus years looking have finally managed to finally score one. Great review.
Congratulations on your new 5. The LL16 is also a great guitar. Even after all this time the 5 is so hard to find but well worth it. I hope you have a lot of fun with it. I have on both of mine. Thanks for sharing and watching.
I ordered an FGX5 at the beginning of September, unfortunately it went from shipping in Oct, then Nov and just yesterday they estimated December. Can’t wait enough. I currently own a Yamaha AC5R which is also a top of the line Yamaha with Rosewood back/sides. I decided I wanted another Yamaha but with Mahogany sides/back that way I’ll own the best of both worlds.
I'm sorry the due date keeps getting pushed back. However, I feel certain once you receive it you'll find it was worth the wait. I was incredibly lucky to find my FSX5 and FG5. At the time I owned a Martin OM28E. I never picked it back up after playing my FSX5. The Martin was a beautiful well made instrument but just wasn't everything the Yamaha is. I sold the Martin. Stop comaring these guitars by price with Martin or Gibson, because these are simply overprized so don't ask yourself how Yamaha does it, ask yourself why Martin and Gibson do what they do, they're not all that if you're objective and play some besides one another, I never played a bad Yamaha, not even the cheap ones but I've played lots of Martin and Gibsons wher was one or more things wrong with I'm sorry to say. So ask yourself the right questions and let nobody manipulate you with an online review, use your own hands, eyes and brain.
