The bread is cut in perfectly equal slices and then distributed. And then there's capitalism, where everybody gets the slice of bread they (presumably) deserve, bigger or smaller - that's the equivalent for economy or business class in this case.

Sure, there were some good parts back in the communist days, like most of infrastructure and the heaviest building in the world(Palace of the Parliament from Bucharest) being build during those times and zero external debts. But in the end, what was "the good" of the country was built on the back of the population. In the last years of communism there were some major problems with food, which was also a factor that led to the revolution.
The only similarity that remains is that we are still divided after 1989 into 2 countries, such as was West and East Germany. Romania and Moldova, 2 countries with the same language, the same history and the same origin.
I do not know how it is in the Czech Republic now, but in Romania the standard of living is definitely much better.

I lived in Pyg 10 years ago for 4 years. i have flew those ilyusin and tupolev many times on the Bjg-Pyg route and even to Vladivostok. My impression, is that the pilots are very skillfull and with the outdated fleet, Air Koryo is understandably impressive.

I flew on this airline in November 2017. It is far better than Air Canada, Westjet, and United, which are all considered "top" airlines. The seats in economy are large and very comfortable, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the flight attendants much friendlier. Even the infamous Koryo burger isn't too bad; just eat the mystery meat and toss the bun aside. At least they give food to eat, unlike North American airlines. Out of 5, I would rate this airline at least 3.5, if not 4.

Air Canada should be rated 1 star (lost baggage, impossible to talk to a human even after holding for 2 hours, refunds take forever, rude staff, arbitrary cancellations). Air Koryo is actually something closer to 3.5 or 4 stars. The only downside is that their fleet is old, but considering that they are well maintained and there has never been any accidents, it is not a huge problem.

- An American Airlines MD-83 with some of its plastic interior panels and window shades installed upside down
- Hong Kong airlines regional flight with people sleeping on the floor or across multiple seats for entire flight including takeoff and landing
- horrible, scary turbulence of Aer Lingus
- Cambodia Angkor Air rough landing that made me hit my head on seat in front of me and probably severely damaged landing gear

I went to the DPRK a few years ago and flew with Air Koryo. A wonderful experience! Air Koryo and the DPRK as a whole does remarkably well in the fields of economy, defence and social wellbeing for the people. When you consider that the DPRK is a country which faces a blockade (economic war like Cuba amongst others) and has been destroyed by the US/UK and its puppets. The western media continues with its barrage of anti DPRK propaganda since the US/UK were defeated in 1953. This propaganda is digested by most of the people in the west. This is expressed by comments in this and other videos including Independent videos on Air Koryo. Thank you Sam Chui for another excellent video.

Being a diplomat staff posted in Pyongyang, I fly with AK quite often, and I enjoy it every time. The unique interactions with the flight attendants, the atmosphere, very attentive, well-mannered, elegant and attractive staff make it a memory to remember, though the flight from PY to Beijing is far superior in this regard. It is usually far less crowded, and often, a flight attendant would sit next to you if there is an empty seat and start a conversation, especially if they see you can speak Korean. I've had that happen to me many times, and I really can't imagine that happening on any other flight anywhere else.
The only undeniable downside is that their planes are pretty old, though not as old as they used to be. Still, it doesn't mean there is an actual risk of a disaster during the flight, and considering what some other things in DPRK look like (especially outside the capital city), it's not so bad at all.
If you're looking for the *really* worst airlines, look towards Nepal, Afghanistan, or most mid- or low-range airlines in some Arab countries. I've seen things there you wouldn't believe.

Yeah i highly doubt Etihad and Emirates are worse than Koryo… no matter what flaws they may have, even just in terms of presentation and ambience…no way. The only bad thing I see here is how old the Soviet era planes are, and also the shitty food and drink options don’t seem to make sense. Or look appetizing even for plane food. The Kimbap might be good but again it’s plane food either way.
Moreover, I think the Arab airlines they’re referring to are the cheap, “regional” (and possibly unregulated) “airlines” in remote parts of the Middle East or Nepal. Basically they’re just pilots with planes that people know about and maybe pay him for his services, on a random schedule, lol. And they likely only serve those areas. Emirates and Etihad are internationally known with flights everywhere.

Forgetting for one moment that it's the airline of North Korea, that short haul business class looks rather good. Actually looks like better service than the new BA Club Europe (which is just economy seating with the middle seat being unallocated). Not a big fan of Asian food but the in-flight catering on that flight looked good quality and plentiful. Not sure if it;s fair to say it's the worlds worse ever airline - Ryanair, FlyBe etc don't provide any complementary catering and the legroom is poor.

They had only one major accident back in 1983, when basically brand new Il-62M crashed.
For me that considers as safe already. It has been 33 years since the incident.
But then again they only operate 4(?) international routes, naturally the number of accidents would be lower.
Jason Tung Well they did not fly much abroad during 90s, but take note that they are still maintaining IL-62Ms for an example from early 80s. Its not that easy to keep in shape aircraft which for spares are getting rare.

Yes, the North Korean regime is awful. But I’ve never understood how that translates to claims that Air Koryo is the worst airline in the world. Disclaimer I’ve never flown on Air Koryo. But I have watched numerous videos on it and I haven’t seen any that make it look nearly as bad as some of the sketchy African and south Asian airlines I have been on. You could argue that as the first and last thing travelers to North Korea see, this is intentional and simply part of the propaganda, which is certainly possible if not likely. But that argument only proves that Air Koryo is trying and mostly succeeding, at delivering a quality service, even on their older aircraft.

+Gong Xiangpu If you are on the same booking and check in together, you get seats together. So many smaller airlines have automatic seat assignment, and have you pay to pick another seat. I've used Ryanair countless times and never paid anything more than the ticket price, except once for a new ticket when I lost mine on the way to the airport.

On such flights many people don't care about service, they just want a cheap ticket. No need to keep complaining, low cost = low comfort, it'll never change. Apparently plenty of people don't mind, otherwise they'd be out of business. At least they are subject to adequate safety checks, unlike Air Koryo.

This is a common sound for every engine at this size... all turbofans gives away a buzzsound,but at different depth in sound ofcourse... The CFM engine mounted on the 737NG is worse in my opinion :)

I noticed the way food was laid out - it was clearly sparingly arranged as if every peach slice or carrot was a metaphor for a special luxury - reports of food shortages aside, it clearly shows that what we in the West consider everyday food, is treated with a great deal more respect - and loved the stirring music in the background - very appropriate. I think Air Koryo is An good airline, It might not have inflight entertainment, But the food Looks good, the seats are Not dirty unlike other airlines, also they haven’t had an Airplane crash since 100 Years ago. I’ll give them an 4 out of 5 Stars.

2019,Ocober I flight with TU 204-100 from Beijing to Pjöngjang. The Personal on Board was always friendly and helpful. The Service was okay .The Pilot started and landed in a nice way.
