What I've learned from all of the "best spouse" comparison videos, is that everyone sees them through the lens of their own personality and life experiences. Which means each of us sees the NPCs differently.
And that's okay. We all don't have to like the same marriage candidate. This is why there are so many different choices in who to romance--or not! (let's not forget Krobus) There is someone for everyone.
I think a lot of people like Elliot, not for his romance events but, for the random dialog he gives while being married. I've married everyone, too, and Elliot is hell of a sweet talker.
Elliot's 14 heart event is literally the sweetest thing, like I cannot even describe to you how much it touched my smol bb heart. And you're right his general dialogue when he's married to you is that with a lot of care and love.

Maybe it will be fixed with an update. I am thinking about using mods but have no clue how to find them and or will I have issues with steam coz of the mods...
Never married a character other than Leah she’s actually the best. Favorite NPC in the game I love every update that gives her more dialogue

Krobus is our aroace icon 💜 He lets me get the benefits of marriage without actually having to experience romance for myself in the game. I don’t know if he was intentionally made so romance-repulsed people can feel included, or if that’s just an added bonus. Either way, he makes me so happy

i think the platonic partners mod could be good if you want to live with another character non-romantically, but obviously this only works if you can mod your game and other mods might conflict with it
I was going for Haley just because she seems to despite us at the beginning (totally not because she's gorgeous), and boy was I persistent. But as soon as i knew we could invite Krobus to be our housemate without having to go through mariage I immediately dropped Haley. tbh i felt kinda guilty for abandoning Haley so suddenly but like😭😭😭

Elliott is one of the few who doesn't become a shell of his former self. He's still working on his books and is a mildly succesful author, he's still melodramatic and sweet as he's always been.
Haley becomes a cute supportive farmer who cares about the farm and still does photography

I was planning on marrying Shane and ended up with Elliott (it's been three in game years now) I understand he might not be for everyone but he's such a malewife and his dialogue in post marriage is so sweet :(

To be honest, as someone married to Sebastian I understand why you say something is missing, you really have to take your time and play more to see his dialogue, although you could go to the wiki and check his dialogue too. Sebastian is really sweet and adorable and his character is complemented not only by his heart events, but also by his day-to-day dialogues. I really liked the video, thanks Nino!

I know he says things like being at the farm with you is bringing him out of his shell so maybe that’s why it takes awhile to get the super sweet dialogue. 3 years into marriage he says the sweetest things to me that makes me swoon
True, his daily dialogues are even better than his heart events. I don't love him because of the baddie, emo things, I love him because his relativeness and development after marriage.
I finally found someone else who thinks that Haley is a babygirl. She's literally so sweet after you get to know her and her character developement is top tier. I will never stop defending her. THANK YOU FOR PUTTING HER IN HER OWN SS TIER

@@LOLA-yj9rr his sprire still drinks but after his 14 heart event it turns out he's been going to the saloon and is drinking joja cola instead. He does still have the odd line about wanting a beer or cider but as long as you're keeping your spouse happy then no, he's not a heavy drinker like he was

Look, even us Elliott fans can agree that that 10 heart event is worded really really off...like why the trembling? Was that necessary? It almost made the choice of how you felt for you in a way? But that's not why we love him. We love his sweet, adorable dialogue before and after marriage. He words things in such a romantic flowery way that makes you audibly say 'awww'. Like for me the events could be better (though the 14 heart event is the best but the others need work...) I can overlook them because he's such a nice husband.
(Also the trembling thing is a common romance trope and Elliott's story has a lot of those but I agree that the game kind of makes it weird for no reason)

- She's super cute in her nurse uniform and when you're married to her and enter the clinic while she's working, she greets you with a "Hi Honey! ❤" Makes me feel so loved!
- She has dialogue about Sebastian not really behaving like a brother towards her and how sad that makes her

So far I’ve only married Seb, Maru, and Elliot. Seb was a bit too emo for me, he does say sweet things sometimes but idk he seemed unhappy in the marriage and I felt guilty like I trapped him or something. Maru was sweet but she seemed more like a friend. I like the idea of her with Penny better. I ended up picking Elliot because I liked his spouse room 😂 then I saw how disliked he was by a few of the sdv TH-camrs and really leaned into it. All the trees in my greenhouse are pomegranate trees and another next to the outside spouse area. I have an aquarium with squid and lobsters. I have a fish pond of squid for the ink. I have crab cakes and Tom kha soup on the tables of the house, and I have an entire coop of ducks 😅

As an avid Shane lover, I respect your choice in putting him in “friend” tier. I’m just biased because whenever I played through stardew blind for the first time I married him because thats just how my play through went. I was actually going to try and romance sebastian but shane had the easier loved items 😅
He was the first NPC I ever talked with, so automatically I turned obsessed with him and I marry with him every single save cause I don't have the guts to choose another bachelor 🥺
And also i kinda dislike the other bachelors (especially Seb and Elliot) so it's hard to move on, Shane forever ❤
i avidly remember doing the same thing, buying him and pam beers every day on my first playthrough. i had no idea what else to do some days because i was dumb, so i would spend days fishing to make money so i could give them their gifts. he was the first character i gave a birthday gift to! he certainly is the friend ever

It hurts me every time to see how low people rank Maru. She is such a sweetheart. She is a little dork with rather poor social skills and I unironically love that so much. I know she's a little bland beyond that, but to me she just has a certain charm the other marriage candidates kinda lack. Every time I marry someone else in other save files, I end up going back to Maru. I also generally feel Maru's insecurities often get overlooked because there isn't a lot emphasis put on it. When you are married to her she sometimes asks if she is gaining too much weight and in her heart event with Harvey she immediately panics over a very small accident.
She got done dirty by the writing honestly, I genuinely see a lot of potential showing through, but it just doesn't get the attention it should. Why isn't there more emphasis on how she feels trapped by her father? Why isn't there more emphasis put on the lack of connection between her and Sebastian (wich she mentions in passing that she feels very sad about because she misses that sibling connection)? I honestly think she might be under a lot of pressure because of her father's expectations. Maybe there could be a little about how Sebastian being a bit of a screw up in their parents' eyes add more pressure to Maru to do better and her maybe holding a tiny bit of resentment towards him for it. Tho that really doesn't feel like the Mary we know in game to hold a genuine grudge, so that might not be a good idea. Maybe this whole "Golden Child" thing could be further explored and how that negatively effects her. Not only with the pressure of expectations, but maybe she feels isolated and lonely beyond just Sebastian not really wanting to talk to her. But instead we only get her ,admittedly cute and charming, but also fairly bland nerdy science, stagrazer side. Don't get me wrong, I like it, it's super cute and romantic... but just whyyyyyy ? 😭

Leah is for people who like things easy. but also appreciate nature and art.
Abigail is adorable, easy to get a crush on. She's adventurous and she's interested in you.
Alex is for people who like it casual, but he also has to be conquered.
Emily is for people who like things esoteric and hippie-like. very sweet.
Sebastian is the cool one who needs to be saved and he is very cute.
Sam is easy to like, very positive and straightforward.
Penny is the friendly, quiet girl with a lot of depth, but a bit conservative.
Harvey has a certain status as a doctor, he can take care of you, but he is also rather conservative.
Maru is for the science nerds and those who like nurses. she is very independent.
Shane is the hard shell soft core type who needs saving.
Elliott is easy to adore, but a bit toxic because he wants to be seen and therefore often only sees himself. but he ist creative, romantic and lives by the sea.
I agree Leah is a solid S, I get more best friend vibes with so many others but Leah was definitely my first real Stardew crush

I’ll be honest, I married Harvey, he’s the only one I’ve married. Other than attempting to woo Sam, and honestly it kinda hurt seeing him so low but also that was entirely fair, but also, is him not taking us in a hot air balloon as our first date after telling us he was scared of heights in the scene with his aviation equipment not out there I found that so adorable. 😭

Harvey is number one. Helps on farm, gives you massages, cooks for you, never jealous when you give flowers to someone else who is same gender as he. Never makes any drama, have an actual job and does not mop around the house. Decorated the house etc... Number 2 is mark and 3 emely. 4 is Sam. Everyone else sucks..

Hi nino! I have also experienced the lovey dovey stuff from Sebastian AS A GIRL FARMER. I think most of bachelors and bachelorettes have different dialogue for the different characters try playing as a girl farmer and see if you get that kind of dialogue from seb
As an Elliot & Haley lover, I switch between them every few years. I’m personally a writer and a poet, so that’s why I love him so much. As for his more… ‘negative’ scenes, I cannot validate him lmao.

To give him some credit, you ARE somewhat well into dating at that time. To me it reads like an autistic person planning and scripting based on romance novels or TV shows, and trying to make a perfect movie moment happen when, unfortunately, real life doesn't follow those same cues. You can't really suspend disbelief IRL for things you would in romance novels. I'm not here to argue that it was a GOOD move, and those who are made uncomfortable by it are absolutely fair to, but I also can't fault him for trying to hit all the beats he felt he "had to" in order to be a good boyfriend.

Elliot is either you love him or you hate him for players. Hailey is F rank for me, and Eillot "Love of my Life" rank lol. 8 years in-game save and never divorced Elliot, he's just the sweetest, helpful, and gentle soul as a marriage partner. His marriage dialogue and cutscence are perfection. I couldn't bring myself to divorce him.
I did 100% game perfection with him as my partner, and I'd rather no one else on that final cut scene than Elliot.
But I agree pretty well with everyone you put in the middle.

I marry elliot every time. Ive had little stints with others but besides from leah and Emily, all the others become like a shell of their former selves. Elliots loving life and writes his books and helps out on the farm and all his dialogue is "my life is so much better now i love you so much"
For me its also a big + that he actually feels like an adult, were as Sam, Sebastian and Alex seem like they are barely out of highschool...

I have been told by sebastian he loves me twice now. My first day of marriage with sebastian he watered all my crops and filled my dogs water bowl, the second day of marriage he fed all my animals. The other day he fixed my fences. He sometimes says boring stuff or repeats the same thing but other times he thinks deeper stuff. He also decided to quit smoking for our marriage. I think you must have been unlucky, or needed to spend many more days talking to him. He has said things like "I need my independance but I still love you" and today he said "I went out last night *or something* I have trouble sleeping sometimes it has nothing to do with you, I love you"
I def think his character is introverted or suffers from anxiety depression or some form of hikikomori agoraphobia or maybe he is neurodivergent idk

Concerned Ape did Shane so dirty 😭 He’s one of my favorite male bachelors but CA did him SO dirty with his room and later heart events. I would 100% use mods to change his later events and his room.
I LOVE Shane. Ape did him so dirty, tho. He's in recovery, yet his room has spilled beer. Plus, his 14 heart event isn't sweet or romantic. It's your character not trusting him not to drink. They could've made that scene so sweet if after Shane goes into the saloon the 2nd time and you follow, have your convo minus the "I don't trust you." Then you both make memories gaming in the saloon and drinking joja cola.
They could've even changed his room after the 14 heart event. Remove the spilled beer and replace the beer case with joja cola.
Sweet and character development PLUS fixes his room and makes it not nasty.
tbf, despite how a lot of media portrays it, recovery is not linear. its not a straight shot "im gonna get better and go to therapy" and then you magically change everything for the better. youre going to have relapses. youre going to have episodes. youre going to feel like you havent made progress at all and wonder why youre even trying. ive been in therapy for my depression for years, and i still often neglect to take care of myself and my belongings. though im still trying every day. its not often talked about because a lot of people are really ashamed of it, but depression (and especially addiction) is ugly. it destroys everything if you let it. and its an incredibly difficult hole to crawl out of, even with support.
i dont really like shane as a marriage candidate, but i just wanted to put that out there. hes 100% not ready for a relationship, but as far as how his addiction/depression is handled, its pretty accurate.
I love Alex. I do believe he’s very much for the guys and gays. His arc is one of the best ones in game (second too Shane which i dont see as a romance option since I believe it’s just best being friends but it’s worth sayinf) and everything about his arc is really good. I feel like if your a female farmer you may just be immediately turned off too him and not even try ((which is fair)) but I do like that he apologizes to you for his behavior. Even if his other lines are still a bit questionable. He’s just gotta be my favorite himbo

Elliot had SO much potential, he was betrayed by his own code - the concept of him is AMAZING, but his dialogue and that boat scene make him so unlikeable
Always played as a female farmer and Alex is my favourite, when I play I view it as he starts of sexist but then changes as a person. I'm kind of a jock myself and find his storyline to be the best and the way the sports part of his life is written is my favourite ever. Also sweetest husband ever, I'm always so charmed by his dialogue when married to him

My only disappointment is that you misunderstood Penny's 8 heart event. It has to be the mandela effect at this point, I'm not sure how to fix it. You can answer her "do you want kids" question in any way you want, you'll lose at most 10 friendship points. It's all on the wiki.
What you lose 1500 friendship points is if you respond "I can't stand kids" to her asking you to help teach a lesson to Jas and Vincent. In front of them.
Everything else was fine, it just irritates me that this misunderstanding has gotten so widespread in the Stardew fandom.

Alex is my absolute favorite of all bachelors. I can relate to him cause of the mother thing, not to get into too much detail. And I always play a male farmer, so I guess I see him change for the better more. I would even put him into S-tier, tbh :D

i think the reason why so many people can gravitate towards elliott is because he’s canonically not young, so you don’t feel like you’re taking advantage of it. he also continues to work for his dream, so you don’t feel guilty for cutting it short. he’s also one hell of a sweet talker and loves you like he was made to love you

I am an Elliott fangirl for life! He is the best bachelor out of them all and I will die on that hill!! Stop slandering my boy! ^__^ No, seriously though, he's the sweetest person in the valley aside from Granny. He is very poetic and I don't think he always has the same social cues as the rest of us, so he says things that make people arch a brow, but he genuinely doesn't mean any harm. In that scene where he tells you that he wishes he were a farmer instead of a writer, if you pick the option that says, "It's just as difficult being a farmer..." he IMMEDIATELY apologizes and says that his comment was thoughtless. He didn't mean any harm, he just wasn't thinking about how his words could be offensive. I know that sounds like something a WRITER should be aware of, but it still went over his head. Even so, he's a great guy.
I would agree on most of these. My changes would be that Sam is love of my life tier. He has some other great dialogue that I don't think you've seen. Like he knows about his mother being secretly unhappy, and he tells you about his dad pacing the halls at night but refusing to talk to Sam or Jody about his PTSD. He worries about Vincent in sweet ways, and he's a great dad. And Sam grows even further as a character in his summit dialogue, which gets me right in the heart.
“I feel like I've changed a lot from when we first met... you know? ...you might call it 'maturity'... hehe. But I'm at a place, now, where I'm actually really excited about our future together.. Even if that means just doing normal stuff, like... uh... buying groceries and changing diapers... hah...”
He's grown up so much, and he basically gave us the Waymond Wang "laundry and taxes" line years before Everything, Everywhere, All at Once was made. Sam looking forward to even the mundane or unpleasant parts of life in his future with the player strikes me as far more romantic than any of Elliott's flowery declarations.
My other switches would be Haley to A. Harvey to B. Elliott to C, because I enjoy his book and don't mind the questionable boat scene. And Seb down to F for me. (Seb has some solid heart events, but I feel like he's too emotionally distant for me. He's always talking about space of his own, and it really irks me that he doesn't even try to offer the player any kind of meal. Sam and Shane can't cook, but they still make an effort. Shane will make you pepper poppers or pizza. After seeing how Jody reacts to a dropped egg, it's no surprise Sam can't cook, but he still makes instant pancakes and heats pizzas for us. Sebastian on the other hand has dialogue where he talks about heating a pizza just for himself, and he never thinks of the player. It bugs me how emotionally unavailable he seems even after marriage. )
I love Harvey, he's sweet, nerdy and I just adore how he looks after you no matter if you play as a male or female.

@@CrowLady0_0 I highly recommend using mods! The initial set up of smapi is a bit fiddly. I used online guides/videos. But once done, adding and taking away mods is very easy. I haven't got one for hair colour tho - will need to do some searching! 💕

Genuinely do not understand people who hate on Elliott. He's incredibly romantic and supportive as a partner. His married dialogue is swoon worthy and he's got the sweetest 14 heart event. All the other male candidates pale in comparison.

I started playing Stardew because my sister said that Harvey was like my boyfrfiend irl (also the game seemed generally cool -I love it now) Harvey is in my S tier for so many reasons, he's so sweet and so romantic in his own ways and I love that about him on top of the spouse roles for gameplay ie. food gifts, watering crops/feeding animals.
Never thought I'd like Sam, but oh my gosh after another playthrough I gave him a chance and was SWOONED - also sweet and his 10 heart? Sweet and spicy lol but his character development and genuine kindness and fun loving sense to him really got me
Leah - she is so cool and I really like getting to know her and running into her by accident most of the time. I think she's lovely, down to earth and has a great story not too dissimilar to the farmers. Love the heart event with her and Marnie haha (I haven't married her but I feel like she and the farmer would make a cozy twosome)
My first file I married Alex. Yes, I found him sexist at first, but his heart events won me over. And his married dialogue at the winter star event. 😍 Although, I think Hayley says the same thing.
I don’t play Stardew Valley much, but I have a save file where I’m a girl and I’m going after Abigail and one of her cutscenes just got me. I do find it annoying that there’s only two gender options for the character though

I love how you rated their stories separately because I totally agree with Shane's ranking, makes me wish the game had an option to build true friendship and further develop those stories without having to be romantically tied to them.
My favorite is Lance (my king, my everything) from Expanded, but from the vanilla it's Haley so far.

shane is like the one marriage candidate that i dont think i could ever marry, and its pretty much for the same reason you said. hes better to me as a friend. for me personally, its mainly because ive been the "therapist friend" in the past and its put me in pretty traumatizing situations. his heart events were kinda triggering for me. so yeah, for the sake of my own mental health, i dont bother with him much.
What I think I like about Shane is his storyline is the most realistic. You don't just come in and fix all his problems, he's got real emotions and a real struggle. It's not a silly fantasy or unrealistic love, it's a very real, growing close to him and getting to know him.

As someone who the first person I chose to marry out of EVERY marriageable character was Elliot, was the worst choice I have ever made in Stardew valley. I have described myself as a "hopeless romantic" and Elliot STILL gives me the icks. He has SUCH major "I am such a main character," vibes that he gives himself and it's so cringy during most of his heart events. I love reading romance stories and I love writing my own romance stories because I LOVE the idea of romance, hints why I got attached to playing Stardew in the first place, but that does not mean Elliot is a good character. He is such a snob like character, and I just hate how he was made to be such a snob. He had a good potential character but was absolutely ruined personally for me.
Anyone who tries to defend Elliot otherwise is a red flag to me. I don't care if you love him, you do you. But if you go out of your way to defend him then you are a warning sign.

Elliot is the loml, ever since i met talked to him first. I took making him my husband VERY seriously. As an artist and someone who also doesnt do well with family, his journey spoke to me. I never thought he was pretentious coz why would a snobbish writer live in a literal SHACK on the beach when he could have more. He chose that for himself, and still loved his life. I do think hes just a bit autistic when it comes to social situations. Its been 4 ingame years and we have 2 kids, and hes the perfect husband and i love spoiling him even after so much time.
im definitely biased as an aroace person but krobus makes me so so happy, having an option for a close relationship like that without having to do a romance route makes me feel so seen even if it wasn't intentional. plus he's adorable

I love her so much, she’s the first character I ever went with, I married her in my main play through and will never divorce her lol, I originally did it because I thought it was kinda funny but then getting to know her I just adore her! I just feel that most of the male characters all suck or have worse lives if you marry them. Elliot is the only one whose life improves and he's got great conversations.
i always go for krobus since it counts for the grandpa points for marriage and house upgrades, and he also gives a stardrop the way a spouse would. the only thing thats different is that he doesent do work around the farm and you can evict him for free.
