I watched this again after rewatching Episode I, and get this: He didn't just adopt Qui-Gon's stance: he repeats precisely, move-for-move, the final exchange between Qui-Gon and Maul while he's trapped behind the force field. He does exactly what he saw Qui-Gon do in move 1 and 2, and lures Maul into the same sequence of moves that killed Qui-Gon. When he holds his staff sideways like that, that's exactly what he does in Episode I: he catches Qui-Gon's downward diagonal slash on the right-side blade, bounces it back just a bit too far behind him to recover, stuns him in the face with the crossbar, then stabs him through the gut with the bottom blade before he can get his saber back in front of him.
Obi-Wan executes exactly the same setup here, and Maul responds with the identical moves as in Episode I: he's going to dispatch the student exactly the same way as he beat the master who taught him. At the last moment, instead of bringing the saber to his left shoulder (maul's right shoulder) and cutting in diagonally, he comes straight down with both hands, and as Maul parries the diagonal strike ready to club him with the middle section he cuts neatly through it. It's not just a different cut, it's literally the simplest cut in Kendo, and probably the most basic move of Lightsaber Form I. He lures Maul into trying the same attack he tried 18 years before, and counters it with literally the most basic attack a student can learn.
That's next-level mastery, and it finally cuts through the backflipping saber-twirly nonsense to the heart of what the Jedi are all about. Obi-Wan won this fight about five seconds before it even started.

Maul's last words "He will avenge us" were about Obi-Wan & him.
Maul & Obi-Wan were pitted against each other on Naboo by Darth Sidious.
Sidious ruined Maul via training him, casting him aside on Mandalore & killing Savage.
    Maul was no true Sith.
Sidious destroyed Obi-Wans life via turning Anakin, destroying the Jedi & throwing the galaxy into darkness.
    Obi-Wan is a true Jedi.
Maul & Obi crossed paths and were ruined by the Sith.
Luke is the "Chosen One" (in this particular dialogue) who will avenge them by turning his father (the true Chosen One) back to light and destroying the Sith.
Anakin, not Luke, is the key to destroying the Sith.
Luke is the hand which turns the key.
Post “Rise of Skywalker” Edit: Anakin is the key, Luke turned the knob, & Rey finished it by kicking the door open! ❤️

Personally, I think the fight was brilliant for 2 reasons.
    1) These two have fought each other time and time again, they don't need to feel each other out; which is the drawn out part in all fights, they know what each other are capable of already. There is no need for to master duelist to draw out the battle and waste energy
    2) This fight happens in 2 parts the mental and the physical. The largest is the mental battle, Obi-Wan first goes into a stance of form 3 his favorite form and a very defensive form, Maul knows this so Maul ignites his second blade knowing that he will not break through Obi-Wan's defense using a single blade. Obi-Wan then seeing this switches to form 4 an offensive form Maul sees this and gets excited to him Obi-Wan has made a mistake going on the offense against Maul who is faster and more physically powerful. Maul attacks falling into Obi-Wan's trap. (Obi-Wan switched to form 4 because this is the form Qui-Gon used against Maul, he knows how Maul counters against this form with the hilt bash and baited Maul into using it) when Maul goes to hilt bash he does what Obi-Wan wants and loses.
This fight is not just 3 seconds it's longer and complex but you have to really look at it before the blows start to see it. I get why people don't like it this just why I love it.

Maul had been travelling in the desert for a solid day in dark robes without access to water, the latter of which Ezra didn’t have and caused him to collapse. The only thing keeping him going was his hate for Kenobi. After losing yet another battle with him, his hatred faltered, leaving him weak and fatigued. The desert did him in, but Obi-Wan was still there to reassure him and for Maul to die believing that he - and whoever else he was addressing - would be avenged.

Also if you analyze their mental state at that time.
Obi-Wan knows what's his purpose is. He spent a number of years training on his own and maybe even communing with his old master Qui-Gon (Yoda taught him how to talk to the living force.)
So in a way he also completed the difficult training Yoda endured before. He was a full pledged Jedi Master already.
Then look at maul Confused, Betrayed, Angry, Frustrated and most of all he doesn't know what to do with his life except to just hate Obi-Wan. In a way his skill level never really improved since they last faced in the clone wars.
Hence conclusion Obi-Wan basically ended him the fastest way possible not because he could but because He pitied him in the end. :)

I love how at 8:55 Maul attempts to touch Obiwon and doesn’t, in a way showing his desire for a connection with him; and yet with his dying breath he speaks of vengeance, showing he never really grew into anything more than a character reacting to the bad things that happened to him. A soul truly destroyed by the dark side.

I’m sure almost everyone was expecting Duel of the Fates 2.0
but after watching this a few times, I can't help but like, or at least agree,
with this approach to their final face-off. It's very much an homage to A New
Hope Obi-Wan; this is Alec Guinness’ Kenobi, not Ewan McGregor’s.
Maul is such a cool and tragic character, and, not being a book or comic
reader, his story is to me the most fleshed out of the Sith characters; from
Phantom Menace, through Clone Wars and now ending it here just before A New
    Hope.
So far, in the two shows and the seven episodes, Palpatine is the only truly
irredeemable dark-sider that can only be hated. All the others, from Maul and
Vader to Ventress, Savage and Dooku can be sympathized with.

um... i agree with you that most you can't really do that with darth maul... in the clone wars he literally executes civilians(given the angle of the blade decapitating them) just to draw out 1 person to get revenge... i wouldn't call him someone to sympathize with... especially since we don't really know what childhood was like for him or not. with savage though we do know he was 100% forced into this turned into a monster forced to do whatever he was commanded and even kill his best friend so for him you can totally sympathize with... but most of darth maul has been gruesome moments. i wasn't joking about the executing... i never noticed it as a child but i rewatched the specific episode not to long ago it cuts to the kids then back and him saying that the only thing in a war to get jedi attention is slaughter of the innocent.... and then cuts away. then the next time we see him he has people lined up ready to be executed and actually does it... i have no sympathy for maul... i mean you can say he gains sympathy points for what sidious did to him and his brother... but honestly there can only be 2. and darth maul was trying to be the "true sith lord" so really the only reason sidious went after him was because of that if he didn't make himself as noticed or at least didnt try and hold that title it wouldn't have ended the way it did. so i don't really give him sympathy points for that i give him you did that to yourself points.

dont get me wrong though i definitely feel sad for maul but i don't have sympathy for him... unless we get something that shows full on force when becoming sith like what happened to savage but because savage had his entire body change and mind altered idk if that happened to darth maul(considering he still looks like he has a regular body) and when obiwan tries to give him sympathy points darth maul talks like he wanted to be sith.... as of right now im gonna have to be under the opinion that he did this to himself

Maul killed Qui-Gon. That affected Obi-Wan so much that he changed his lightsaber style and became the best at it. But it still is a mental scar. In the final confrontation, he switches back to the style he learned from Qui-Gon because he's at peace with what happened to Qui-Gon.

Obi-Wan used the same style as Qui-Gonn when he was his padawan, which we saw in Episode 1. After witnessing Qui-Gonn's death, he switched to a more defensive style, some would say more conservative. Whether he switched back to Qui-Gonn's style permanently or just for this final showdown I can't say. But a part of me felt that his conservative nature in all things was driven by Qui-Gonn's death.

*[This isn't my comment, it's by someone named disenyNAW but I think it's worth sharing around]* "I originally thought that what I wanted was one last battle between the two old rivals, a minute or so worth of lightsaber duelling. I thought that that was the only way to end off someone like Maul while paying tribute to the "Old Wound" comic. But this was better than anything I could've assumed or predicted, this was the perfect way to end Darth Maul's story, especially after seeing what he was in "The Clone Wars" and in "Rebels". A lot of people are saying that this should've been an ultimate duel of Jedi VS Sith. But that's not what's happening: this is a duel between one who has mastered the force and has found peace within himself, where Maul is a mere broken shell of his former self. If you pay close attention, you can see that Obi-Wan changes his Lightsaber stance to that of Qui-Gon's and Maul, noticing that, tried to kill Obi-Wan with the same move he used to kill Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan baited Maul into doing as such and cut him down. Obi-Wan was in balance where Maul had become more vile, unstable, and savage in his fighting technique. Had Maul been still in his prime, I think he would've figured out the trap. But his mental health isn't what it used to be. This isn't the Sith warrior we knew: he lost his title and all chances as a Sith, lost any opportunity at a future with power and reputation, didn't have any directions left except desperation and his old rival, lost his family, etc. He was discarded at every turn and was left with nothing. From the sound of it, Obi-Wan didn't plan on killing Maul, but when Maul alluded to Obi-Wan protecting "someone" (Luke), Kenobi knew Maul couldn't be left alive with that sort of information, and so he had to silence him. And in Maul's dying words, we really feel the tragedy that is his character, asking Obi-Wan if he's protecting the Chosen One. We know Obi-Wan only figures out that Luke will defeat Vader in his final moments in "A New Hope", so here Obi-Wan is lying to Maul by telling him that Luke is the Chosen One: he knows it's not true, but lies to Maul to give him some form of comfort in his final moments, to give him some form of peace in death. Maul's only condolence is knowing that he'll eventually be avenged with Sidious' death, that both he and Kenobi will be avenged from all the things Sidious did both to the Jedi, and to Maul. A former Sith with nothing left to himself, it was nice of Kenobi to give him a sort of comfort to take with him into oblivion (since the Sith believe there is nothing after death). And even after everything Maul did to him (killing Qui-Gon and Satine), Kenobi is above revenge and is willing to give Maul something of an warrior's death. When Maul reappeared in Rebels last season, I thought he'd go back to his old tricks and try to create a new empire for him to rise out of, but now we see that was never the case. Maul didn't care anymore about things like the Darksaber or taking back Mandalore, and he knew he couldn't take on Vader or Sidious. This whole time, Maul was looking for closure: he was looking for Kenobi to finish it all. Giving Obi-Wan a final chance to fight Maul, and either die at Maul's hands or kill Maul. If anything, I think consciously Maul was hoping that killing Obi-Wan would bring him peace and closure. But subconciously, I think Maul wanted Obi-Wan to kill him and put an end to his misery. Maul by then had been suffering for almost two decades from his losses in the Clone Wars. What chances did he have at success anymore? He had nothing, and so died a nothing. He was technically living and breathing, but had no path or reason to live, trying to rely on revenge to sustain himself further. Even more tragic is that with this death, Maul will probably be forgotten over time. The other Sith (Dooku, Vader, Sidious, etc.), they'll be remembered even in death for the tyranny they all caused and for how they died at the hands of their enemies. But here Maul's death is but a whimper in the wind, no one will know what became of Maul, no one will remember him. He'll be forgotten over time and no one will ever know his story from the Sith warrior to the broken unbalanced nothing that he became. That is the tragedy of Darth Maul. That is why this was the perfect way to end his story. And THAT is why this episode was so excellent."

Anakin is the Chosen One period. Luke was the key to helping his father bring balance to the Force. That and I don't believe Anakin was meant to be a Jedi or a Sith. But being the Chosen One, I believe he was an agent of change. Especially since the Jedi (save for Qui-Gon) weren't sure what part he would play. Unlike Qui-Gon, the Jedi actually misunderstood what Anakin really was: an agent of change.

By eradicating the dark, it never finds a balance, balance is just the word used for inner peace. The force can rest, the force can find peace. But with the dark, it is conflicted, it cannot reside at any one peace. However, balance can be brought by having complete darkness. It is a peaceful society if everyone is willing to kill and steal. It is also peaceful if nobody kills or steals. This is balance. Not a 50/50 split.

Obi Wan baited Maul into a trap similar to how Maul baited Qui Gon into fighting into a confined space. Obi Wan switched his stance to resemble Qui Gon's which made Maul feel he could attack using the same methods that he used to defeat Qui Gon. Instead Obi Wan only switched his stance to look similar, but not his form which beat him.
Also Maul said he would avenge us, he was referring to how Sideous took him and tortured him and trained him in the dark side thus ending his life and his brother's life. Also he meant how the Chosen One would avenge Obi Wan as well for Sideous basically eradicating most of the jedi. The Chosen One would defeat Sideous thus avenging them both.

He lost his legs, respect, power, sanity, mother, brother and was betrayed by someone he saw as a father-figure, and by the end, all he had left was literally just revenge against the one who started that chain-reaction. And like they said, after all the suffering Sidious put them through, Maul and Obi-Wan didn't only stop hating each other, but in the end, actually saw each other as kindred spirits.

I just watched that episode and was soooo hoping they would show Luke or make a reference and then I heard "Luke...Luke?!" and I screamed and then when I realized they played the "Binary Sunset Theme" I started crying...

The problem with Luke here is Leia has been shown on this show as a teenager, and since they are twins it feels like a mistake to have Luke appear small.

I pretty sure that expression also refers to physical maturity as boys tend to get growth spurts at later ages. Also it's far away, perspective may be scewing with your sense of scale, not helped by the fact that the Lars family houses are short due to the inner parts being sunken down more. I'm not saying that the show runners didn't make a mistake, but that descrepency is easy to handwave.

My favourite bit that Dave Filoni clarified is that Obi-Wan believes that Luke is the Chosen One at this point, but he's the key to destroying the Sith, because Luke is the only one who still believes in Anakin.

As far as the Chosen One debates. I thought the idea was that Obi Wan gave up on Anakin and saw Luke and felt that Luke would be the key to balance but didn't know how Luke would do it. Which would be by turning his father back and redeeming his father and helping guide him to complete his destiny and defeat the Sith.

Maul got CUT IN HALF and survived! If he doesn't take a lightsaber blade or blaster bolt to the brain, he's not dead. (maybe not even then...)
I thought Obi-Wan cut him in half VERTICALLY this time! It would have been funny if the two half flopped to the ground and Obi-Wan said "Come back from THAT" over his shoulder.
