An astute analysis ! A note on slow urbanization , the current federal system is partly to blame. Provincial capitals like Gondar, Jima, etc. declined with the amalgamation of former states in to disproportionately big ethnic regions. Pre 1991, we used to have 13 provincial capitals (minus Asmara) and they were descent economic centers. They provided alternative economic opportunities for citizens who had the drive to make it somewhere else. After 1991 only a handful left.
