In this video I’m going to investigate each Ballon D’or award post 2015 and determine based on the achievements of both Messi and his competitors whether Messi's Ballon D'or wins were truly merited or if Messi’s name carries much more weight than you’d expect.

Messi had an outstanding season, carrying Barcelona on his back. However, Liverpool's success wasn't just about Virgil; it was a team effort. Comparing Messi's individual brilliance to Liverpool's teamwork is like comparing apples and oranges. Both impressive, just in different ways.

Dude is talking like messi was single handedly scoring the goals assisting creating, defending and goalkeeping. Yes messi might have been the best player in barcelona that year, but no way was it only a one man show. Just because the rest of the players don't have the same kind of spotlight as messi in that team, doesn't mean that were just sitting back and watching the show. The argument is simple, messi was best for barca and van dijk for liverpool. Messi was the top scorer for barcelona, laliga and van dijk was a rock in defense, with liverpool conceding the least amount of goals that season. But van dijk won the more meaningful trophies, kept a clean sheet vs barcelona in the second leg and defeated messi. So he should have won the award

In that year, Messi had a hand in 73 out of 130 goals scored, that's insane. While Salah and Mane were top scorers of EPL and firmino two steps behind them, and trent with more than 10+ assists, Messi only had Suarez who was a constant help, but the rest of his team didn't consistently step up like Liverpool's did. Even Virgil himself admitted they had to focus on Messi because he was the heart of the team, Messi would have 4 guys on him on that game but his teammates couldn't capitalize on that. Plus, Messi's individual brilliance was evident, with defenders like Virgil struggling to contain him he was calling for help at one point of that game. And something he didn't say in that video is that Liverpool's league lead slip-up while ahead by 7 points and they lost the league to city by one point. Both had great seasons both bottled a lead they had and went on to win one trophy, but saying Virgil deserved the Ballon d'Or more than Messi? That's just laughable.

In the first leg, Messi tore Liverpool apart, and in the second leg, they threw four guys at him constantly, but his team couldn't convert. It was all Messi or nothing. On the flip side, Liverpool had Salah and Mane as top scorers, Firmino not far behind, Trent with insane assists for a defender, and Becker with the most clean sheets - they were stacked! But to imply Virgil was on Messi's level and Messi won just because he's liked more? Virgil was solid, sure, but Liverpool still managed to blow a seven-point lead and lose the league by one point. Liverpool votes were scattered in the Ballon d'Or because they had so many standout players, giving Messi the edge. Both were exceptional, but denying Messi deserved it? That's just not realistic.

That game liverpool had completely had the upper hand over messi and the barcelona attack. If the ballon dor was given solely based on individual performance, then messi should have won 12 times: 08/09, 09/10, 10/11, 11/12, 12/13, 14/15, 16/17, 17/18, 18/19, 19/20, 20/21 and 22/23

Bro casually forgetting in 2019 messi was golden boot winner, la liga top scorer, ucl top scorer. Carried a joke of a barca to a ucl semi final and made them favourites with a 3-0 lead till the second leg single handedly! That carryjob easily makes him worthy of his ballon'dor.
In 2021, every stat except goals went to messi and he still had 40+ goals, he won copa del ray with barca which the author missed, also copa america as player of the tournament and top scorer. Both trophies were more prestigious than anything lewa won that year.
In 2023, wc, french super cup and ligue 1 won in the ballon'dor period, wc golden baller winner, fifa the best winner, iffhs awards winner, laureus winner. Had more g/a than haaland. Again dominated in every stat except goals while still scoring tons of goals. Top assister for psg. Most motm in 22/23 season. Broke the record for most goals scored in european football.
I'm not saying messi's competitors that year were not deserving at all, but to say messi didn't deserve them would just be pure bias and underselling his well earned achievements. Messi deserved all his trophies.
The inaccuracies in this video are quite amazing. Don't even know where to begin, but - let's start with the obvious. In 2015, Messi was the top scorer, provider and innovator in a dynamic team. Had to win it. Messi with Barcelona in 2019 was one of the biggest carry-jobs in the history of the sport. Messi reaching the CL semifinals, winning a leg and getting two trophies with the weakest Barcelona side since 1959 was a far greater achievement than winning the UCL. 2021, Messi carried a Sunday-league Barcelona to a domestic title (yeah, you need to double check your facts) and kept them alive in the champion's league. In hindsight, when he left for PSG, this Barcelona side failed to even qualify for the next UCL, and officially became a Europa league team. That is the real Messi effect - you don't even realize you're a midtable club when one man is carrying 7 others in the squad until he's gone. Of course, he then carried an inexperienced Argentina squad to Copa America, their first major title in over 20 years. Nobody else had that level of impact. "2023 Messi failed to win any meaningful trophy with PSG" - what? Literally the domestic league. You mention Lewandowski's Bundesliga win but not Messi's Ligue 1?

facts idk how you can say the 2019 was controversial. It was the biggest carry job I’ve ever seen. That Barcelona team was in shambles, they had no right making it that far in the UCL.
2021 you can make a argument, saying Lewa deserved it. But once again I’ll go with Messi. He was the brightest star in that dead Barcelona team. Top scorer & assister in the league. Best playmaker in Europe, won the Copa del Rey scoring 2 goals in the final. Scoring the only goals Barca had in the UCL knockouts. Then what he did in Copa was amazing well. 2023 Messi obviously. Haaland was the greatest goal scorer, he wasn’t the best player. He didn’t even qualify for the World cup. In 2018, Messi was ranked 5th in the ballondor because he didn’t have a good world cup. Also Haaland was a disaster in big games. His main objective is to score goals but he didn’t score 1 goal in multiple semi final and final games. What Messi did in that world cup was legendary. 7 goals and 3 assists, scoring in every knockout game and scoring two in the final. Then for PSG he was the leagues top assister and best playmaker. Messi was rightful winner

In 2023, haaland broke the premier league record, won the treble and still somehow loses it. Yes messi won the world cup, but the fact remains that he was t even the best player for Argentina, let alone the whole world. He gave a few assists and scored penalties, that is what he did in that world cup. Emi Martinez was the main reason why even Argentina won that world cup, won 2 penalty shootouts and made insane saves throughout, notable the 1v1 vs kolomuani. Haaland scored 56 goals ( not 61) and 9 assists ( not 11 ) while Messi scored 42 goals and 26 assists that means Messi had more goal contribution + WC

Messi had 50 goals ( not 45 ) with 18 assists ( not 16 ) and he was fighting all alone and made it to the semi-final
IN 2021 :
Yes , Lewa had better stats , he had 64 goals ( not 69 ) but Messi had won the Copa America and Copa Del Rey .
Only year things are debatable is year 2021 but if stats are all what matter Messi would've won it in 2016 , 2017 , 2018 . He won golden boot in all these 3 years and he had the most goal contribution in these 3 years.

I think ballon do'r is based on both pr and how impressive was the individual player throughout the season.. Ronaldo won 2013 ballon do'r being trophyless whereas ribery won treble that year .. Ronaldo scored most goals in all competition that year that's why he won, so why Messi didn't won it in 2016,17,18? This shows it is based on both pr and season.

Haland individual statistics are not good, we could all see his performances in big games, while Messi won the WC that year with the golden ball for great individual statistics during the biggest tournament. What you've stumbled on here is the way in which Ballon d'ors, and in fact all football awards are awarded, which is largely by reputation.
Essentially, you give a big pool of journalists or players the chance to vote, most of whom will not have had a chance to see all the matches in all the leagues and hence the outcome is determined by who's the most famous player on the most successful team of that year. That's it.
Hence Modric wins it in the year that Real win the CL and Croatia reach the world cup final, despite the fact that he didn't play any differently in 2018 compared to his usual stellar level; then Jorginho is one of the nominees in 2021 because of the success of Chelsea and Italy, yet has never been anywhere close to being nominated before or since.
So it's not the Messi effect, it's the fame, reputation and flawed voting effect that's present in any individual award for a team sport.

I love your video bro, but it seems like there are some weaknesses to your summary. through out 16/19 season, messi won 3 Golden boots and 3 Playmaker awards. The only player to have done that. And you kept comparing the team rather than individual brilliance. messi since 16 to 21 has been carrying barca in his back quite literally. probably the biggest consecutive carry jobs in the history of football, no one has ever done that too. The video has alot of flaws and the stats also are incomplete. You should take the point that messi was a playmaker with that many goals as well as how much he actually carried dead barca. You also need to add watch factors as well and performances in important games. The vid is not bad but not very well put out either its decent and can be improved. At the end of the day no person can carry out everything and I hope you keep improving every videos.

I completely agree that attacker bias has been present in ballon d'ors even long before Messi and Ronaldo. I think the same could have been done with 2018 but Modric's team success both club and international would have been too much to dismiss.
As for the 2010 Ballon D'or, I never knew about that controversy, maybe something I'll do a video on in the near future...
