- The Gwalior - Sabalgarh Narrow Gauge (2' line of the former Gwalior Light Railway) features two rail cum road bridges. Road traffic uses these bridges over the Soan and Kwari rivers. It supposed to give way when the train approaches - but does it?

At Simmesport, Louisiana, USA is a railroad bridge over the Atchafalaya River built by the railroad in the 1920's and the state highway department made an agreement with the railroad to deck the bridge for auto traffic to replace a ferry. The set up was that the highway department set up traffic signals for alternating the highway traffic because of the one-lane clearance and the traffic signals were set to red in both directions when a train approached and cleared when the train left. This arrangement lasted until about 1970 when a highway bridge was built over the river a 1000 feet downstream of the railroad bridge.
The first bridge across the Red River between Shreveport, La and Bossier City, La, USA was a railroad bridge and was decked for auto traffic. This lasted until a auto bridge could be built.
I have seen photos of this type arrangement in Peru, Chili, and Bolivia. So sharing a bridge is not new or unusual just the arguement over who gets to use it.
Roy Reynolds Such bridges have been common across India, especially where rail traffic was less and cost / land implementations did not allow separate bridges. Most of these were on the Meter or Narrow Gauge networks. And now very few are left.

This is a narrow gauge line and a same type of bridge we also have in lower Assam but t years ago this bridge was scraped now it's only for vehicles before that rail and vehicle both used this bridge for transport now we have broad gauge line in lower assam but still miss meter gauge

Pare interesanta ideea de asfaltat calea ferata langa drum , pt folosit si de masini . Why can't they build a separate bridge for rail n road ?
I think its not economical to build bridge for trains that are used like 2 times in a day. Also, government has plans to discontinue narrow gauge (sad) so it wont be beneficial to construct a separate bridge now.
