Actually by '69 country rock was a big movement. The Byrds and The Band (and Dylan) were at the forefront. But you also had the Flying Burrito Brothers and other smaller acts.

Some say The Band helped to usher in the more stripped down era. Bob was part of that whole thing too obviously. But yeah the peak of psychedelia was probably 67-68 but by 69 the mainstream had kinda ruined it

Country Dylan is a very underrated little period. His voice was really really something special during this era. John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning are all very cozy, very welcoming records

    • @shuax
      @shuax 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

absolutely agree, Just as great the 65/66 period had been it was also manic, and thankfully he survived that insane time, it was inevitable he would become recluse after that but like you said that period has so many gems, New Morning is one of my favourite albums of all time.

Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash were busom buddies. I had a cigarette, then coffee with Johnny Cash at the concession in the Hollywood bowl October 1966 during Bobs concert. He was a flirt, between marriages at age 39. I was married, 17 with a five month old baby at her first concert. She grew up on Bob Dylan‘s music in our home. We are all like Rolling Stones!

Dylan wasn't doing any protesting in 1969, that was in his early career, in fact Dylan was trying to break away from the counter-culture at the time of this recording to be a family man in Woodstock and not the voice of a generation. That's why he turned down playing at the Woodstock concert.

    • @bostonseeker

Interesting crossing of cultural wires here, as Dylan appeared on the Johnny Cash show multiple times in the 1969-73 period. Country music (which Dylan has worked in on and off) and counterculture. Very different audiences. Dylan and Cash bridged them. I'm sure Cash surprised some of his fans with this, as Dylan surprised his fans with Nashville Skyline. According to my dad, who worked in country and knew Cash professionally, Cash's only requirement was apparently that Dylan get a shave and a haircut :)

      Bostonseeker,
      Excellent background story...
If I remember correctly, clean clothes, a haircut, and a shave were huge sacrifices to make in those days. 😁
Cash and Dylan indeed, at first glance, seem to be culturally incompatible, but I suspect they were kindred spirits.
Whatever.... they were great artists who had a profound affect on music and the culture. More than most.

This is a compact Country masterpiece, it says everything that needs to be said in a couple of minutes, with a superb unseen backing band in the background and some impeccable understated organ fills quietly sliding in towards the end to add even more depth and texture. Like it or hate it, Dylan has one of the most distinctive and expressive voices in music, and he is not overpowered even singing with Cash or the equally great Willie Nelson. Like them he respects the words of a lyric, their meaning, whether his own or someone else's, his phrasing and delivery are unique and his influence as a singer is hugely underrated. For example, I'm as great an admirer of Tom Petty as you will find and Petty's singing owes a huge amount to Dylan, which in no way diminishes Petty’s own brilliance.

I once held her in my arms
She said she would always stay
    But I was cruel
I treated her like a fool
    I threw it all away
Once I had mountains in the palm of my hand
And rivers that ran through every day
    I must have been mad
I never knew what I had
Until I threw it all away
Love is all there is, it makes the world go 'round
Love and only love, it can't be denied
No matter what you think about it
You just won't be able to do without it
Take a tip from one who's tried
So if you find someone that gives you all of her love
Take it to your heart, don't let it stray
    For one thing that's certain
    You will surely be a-hurtin'
If you throw it all away
If you throw it all away

Nashville Skyline was the first Dylan album I bought back in '69. I loved every cut in the album, and 'I threw It All Away' really touched me even as a snotty 15 year-old. Dylan's country period was filled with great songwriting, a more mature Dylan, to be sure, without the navel gazing and flippant lyrics of his early albums which were great in their own way.
