    ABOUT ME:🌿
Hi, I'm Christina - I'm a blogger slash vlogger slash human on the internet slash pharmacist, hence the "apothecary" theme in my name. I'm living in Toronto, Canada and on my channel you'll find me on my journey towards minimalism, being content with less, my debt free journey, and content on my LOW BUY. I also focus a lot of fashion. I think anyone can curate a personal style we can be confident in, using pieces from out own closet or with carefully thought out new pieces. I'm happy to take any requests, too! Your girl is flexible (not physically). Feel free to leave me a comment below - I always make sure to read and respond, and I love chatting with you guys. Thank you SO much for watching and taking the time out of your day to support my teeny little channel. Love xx, Christina.

I have a lot of dupes in the SAME colours...working on that next 😂 - what have you stopped buying?

I'm totally the same with the dupes. I want Birkenstocks and only want Birkenstocks. I put a pair of dupes in my cart the other day, but ultimately I knew I wouldn't be happy. So Birkenstocks it is!

The dupes thing has been such a struggle for me, when I find an item that I really really love, it's hard for me to talk myself out of the fear that the product will be as continued and I'll live with regret forever. But nine times out of 10 when I have purchased dupes, I end up not wearing them nearly as much as I thought I would or my style changes, and buying the dupes is what I end up regretting.

Love this concept! I no longer spend money on makeup subscription boxes like Birchbox. I have spent all of 2020 trying to use up all those samples and I still have a ton. Really stupid! I also no longer watch Amazon Hauls or anything like Old Navy/Walmart, etc...They were filled with things I did not know I "needed" until I watched them. No more!

I haven’t bought anything from amazon for a few years now, and rarely did so before. why would I support a company that doesn’t pay any taxes and has extinguished so many small businesses, not to mention contributing to instant gratification mentality and over-consumerism that has exacerbated our climate crisis?

Think it about this way: do you want to support an unethical non-tax paying company like amazon? Could you get it directly from the seller's platform? or opt for a local option instead? or just get it secondhand from a thrift shop / friends / secondhand groups? It might be cheaper too e.g: freecycle groups. :) For plants, opt for low maintenance and low light plants. I don't have many natural daylight areas in my flat either... you'll already be a minimalist in choosing specific plant types.

    • @EmA-sm8se

I totally agree with you regarding Amazon. I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I only use Amazon 1-2x a year, and I prefer to purchase directly from a seller or shop locally. I really don't have use for Amazon 🤷‍♀️

Post Kondo-ing my whole life I spend MORE money lately on storage solutions. I have ADHD-related "object impermanence" so if I can't see it - I can't find it or forget I have it - I buy a replacement instead of using the one I have. Long-term, just buying (or thrifting) a storage solution saves me money, time, and keeps me from buying duplicates and pitching originals accidentally because they expired or got attacked by moths. Different brains need different things - this one I used to agree with you on, but I realized from observing myself I should just bite the bullet and get the storage tray/ basket/ pot lid rack/ whatever. I still try to thrift or upcycle these first, though - always a good plan :).

    1. Fancy clothes and underwear
    2. Makeup or skin care, unless I'm replacing a staple item
    3. Aspirational fitness clothes and gear
    4. Doesn't apply anymore because COVID- but eating out and getting drinks
    5. Also doesn't apply anymore - but entertainment like going to the movies or live music.
I'm also about 10 months from being debt free, you're almost there Christina!! I'm also pregnant and I'm trying to figure out a new set of challenges with limiting buying unnecessary items. I'm 20 weeks into this pregnancy and have yet to buy a single baby item, so I'd say I'm doing pretty well. Although I'm nesting like a SOB - I want all the furniture and home goods I've been putting off buying while I'm on my debt free journey.

I have been trying to spend less on premade clothing unless it is something unique and exactly what I am looking to add to my wardrobe. Instead I am leaning more on “hobby” spending to make more of my own clothing. Not only do I get pieces I know I will love and cherish, I can make sure they work perfectly for me, they are unique, I can get entertainment out of the process of making them, and I get to support smaller businesses when I purchase yarn and fabric. It is an investment, but it creates a lot more intentional thinking and purchasing.

    • @ef4zsv
      @ef4zsv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes! Recently I bought something and while a friend told me what I bought was enough I kept feeling that for our needs I needed the stronger more durable one in that line. After much deliberation, I ended up exchanging it and purchased the more durable one instead. It felt good and I have no regrets and I am at peace with the purchase. Dupes, smaller items, etc, are ok but you have to know yourself and how you will use it. Nobody can do that for you. That is key!

I completely agree on the cheap dupes. I'm never happy when I do that and just feel disappointed or ashamed that it's not the real thing or not what I actually want.
Some other things I've stopped buying: candles, perfume, eye shadow (i kept one palette and a few neutral colours, but no more buying colours I'll never realistically wear), nail polish, impractical shoes, subscription boxes, and specialty food items that only get used for one recipe.

Totally agree on those eyeshadow palettes. I wear eyeshadow maybe once a month if that, but I have so many palettes I just "had" to have. Eyeshadow actually makes my eyelids feel dirty. I don't even really like it. I see all these youtubers and their eyeshadow tutorials and I try to convince myself I like eyeshadow.

Ending my subscription to Amazon prime has done wonders for me stopping my impulse buying (and making me question if I really truly need something that I think I need). When I get to the checkout and see how much I have to pay for shipping, I immediately close out of the browser. Even if shipping's $5, that's a deal breaker for me, and I saved so much money because of this roadblock.

Great video! I own a home and try not to buy home decor items. I hate Knick knacks. Too much dust and we appreciate negative space. When we purchase an item it’s something that is going to last. I no longer buy gym memberships. I workout at home. I found its better and I can be more consistent. Trending clothes is on my list too. I’m methodical with what I add to my wardrobe.

Ok.... This advice was exactly what I needed . 😃 it feels really good when you can “ overcome” the impulse to purchase. I 100 % agree with the little things like supplements and decor items. They build up.. you see the clutter , then feelings of stress begin..... Excellent advice... I used it today while looking online ( closed the computer and said you don’ t need that in another colour ! ) ... Thank you 😀🤩😀

Agree about buying things in multiple colors. I would do that all the time with shoes and tshirts. And you’re right I would end up only wearing one or two colors instead of all 5. I find that a lot of my buying comes from the fear or the inability to make decisions. So until I work on that it’s going to be hard to control the shopping. When I go shopping now and if there are too many choices I try to force myself to either pick one or walk away. Tfs!❤️

I spend a lot less on makeup, plants too (but this one is recent 😅); i realised i can make my own baby plants and i can enjoy the ones i already have instead of always wanting a new one, a new kind with a new shape and form, etc.

For me, I’ve found that I would rather purchase high quality items over anything fast fashion or cheaply made/cheaply produced. For example, My biggest spend recently was buying some really nice underwear from organic basics. I can guarantee they will last me years because the quality is so unreal and the fabrics are gorgeous. I will get way more wear out of those than some fast fashion undies that fall apart after 3 washes. The upfront cost is worth it because I won’t need to re purchase for a very long time. What I’m saying is that the biggest lesson I’ve learnt lately is quality over quantity.

Amazing video Christina, and certainly gives me lots to think about! I live in a dorm and have to move 1-2 times a year, so I am forced to be a more minimalistic, simply because I don't have the space or energy for it.

I agree with you on all of these items. I used to always buy something I loved in multiple colors, then never wore any of the extras. Supplements are useless... I mean I could go on and on about how I’m very similar and it’s a learning process. I think once you get to a certain age and realize you are donating or giving away so much stuff constantly to keep clutter down, it makes you re analyze your spending habits.

I never buy by internet, I like physical contact with the item I am about to buy, like to feel it, try it on... I stopped buying books (borrow them from the library), make up and jewellery (use only what I have), minimized buying clothes and shoes...

I am not buying plants anymore because mine are actually thriving and I have lots of friends who also have different varieties of house plants so we're planning on exchanging "baby plants" once in a while. I even had a huge indoor plant given to me by a friend because it has outgrown its space in her home.
Trading things with friends or buying used items from them is something I'm starting to do more. I've been giving away some things that I liked a lot but no longer have a place for, and my friends have been super grateful. Turns out sometimes they remember and offer me stuff that I might need and they no longer use. It's also fun to have a little something that reminds you of a friend in your home.
I also try to look on Marketplace and Kijiji for used items when I want to purchase something. I bought a few handbags in great condition for a fraction of the price. I really get just as much satisfaction from them as I would from a brand new handbag. I also go to thrift stores for house decor items or kitchen items.
I try to repair what I already have instead of buying new stuff all the time.
I had the tendency to shop for "the best outfit for the occasion" before. Now, I really know my style quite well and I have a few options for every type of occasion that I can choose from. I tend to buy clothing that is classic, elegant and really fits my body type and style, instead of trying to purchase a new "statement" outfit that I won't wear more than a few times.
These days I've been starting to make my own Christmas decorations because I do love arts and crafts and I'm actually quite good at it. It keeps me busy and I end up saving money on the whole.
I've been buying a lot from Amazon during the pandemic when everything was on lockdown, so I was an Amazon Prime subscriber for a while, but I think I need to unsubscribe now. Shops are all open on regular hours and I indeed do not need next day delivery for everything.
Thanks for this video. Very motivating!

Expensive makeup, occasion dresses could be altered is something you could do. I have a wedding coming up next year, I have plenty to choose from.
I don’t look much at amazon anymore.
No nick nacks, plain and simple is what I want now.
Everything comfy and simple is my journey now.
    Very few trends, if any!!
If you eat correctly you don’t need supplements. NO DUPES at all!! I don’t buy designer anything, unless it Eileen Fisher, all her pieces are durable and forever pieces.

I’ve received so many plants mostly from my mother in law, I wish I could have picked my own, but I have so many that are just living but wouldn’t be what I would have chosen. For me I love duplicates, and wear them all, but they have to be in neutral colors, that’s key for me.

I loved your points. The comment about Amazon Prime hit home - I was subscribed for a while but I didn't like how it made me shop mindlessly so I stopped the subscription. Now I use Amazon only occasionally and it's not so hard to add up to $25 once in a while to qualify for a free shipping. And I don't mind to wait extra few days for the delivery lol

completely agree with your same shirt with multiple colours and dupe items. i don't get having multiple colours either cuz you basically wearing the same thing?? where is the versatility, i need different style so that i don't look boring. and dupes, yeah if i had money i would purchase the original thing too. i have the same principle as you xD

I _love_ Amazon-Shopping. I put so much stuff in my cart. And then I let it sit in the cart for about 2 weeks before I really purchase it. Usually I don't need it after 2 weeks. Makes Amazon-Shopping much cheaper. But Amazon Prime is great for me. Usually my only source of TV. We never go to the movie theater. As a family of 4 going to the movie theater twice a year costs as much as the Amazon Prime subscription. So it is totally worth the money for us. And I purchase stuff on Amazon. Food, fabric, stuff for sewing which is much cheaper there than in the special shop at our city, ... Amazon has several e-books for free. You can purchase them for 0,00 Euros.

One thing that I don't buy anymore is cotton rounds, balls or Q-tips. It's no secret that these items are wasteful, plus I feel like I can easily get by without them since I hardly ever wear makeup.

I also stopped buying cheap dupes unless I know the dupe is actually better. I kept buying items that are SIMILAR to what I ultimately want, then would end up with too many dupes and upset with myself for accumulating things I don't even like 😒

Ugh I'm so guilty of the duplicates trap....I even buy the exact same item in multiples so I have a "back-up" 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm just starting to declutter my things as I've really started to feel so overwhelmed by what I have and have found myself stress shopping again a lot lately. My goal is to get it under control and have loved watching your content for inspiration and motivation and encouragement 💕

I remember when I first started dating my partner, I felt like I had to have a new dress for every date, and that I couldn't re-wear one, which is the stupidest thing ever especially because he is and has always been a minimalist himself, not to mention he doesn't care about fashion enough to even notice what I'm wearing. 😆

I believe storage items isn’t just to put away things you don’t use. I have storage containers for everything I use daily in my drawers, whether it’s my clothes or kitchen stuff.. I mean you have a clearer view of the things you have and you don’t see papers or your socks scattered around in a drawer.

This is not a willpower thing, this is a new normal thing. Don't worry about the time that will pass, it will pass anyway. See what helps keep you on board, be it spreadsheets, or colorcharts (color a square per X amount paid down), and extrapolate that to your retirement. You will feel like such a bossass B when you get it done, and you'll be right.
