Exactly what I wanted/needed. Great step by step guide. Mine still won’t connect but I think something is set wrong with my radio TX settings. It did receive APRS great. Thank you.
Ideally you would have a recent update or preferably marked Favorites, already stored that could get you to a RMS gateway in a grid down situation. Then yes, update via radio for the latest propagation table updates. In a large scale grid down scenario you would likely have better luck with HF links to distant gateways that are out of the immediate disaster zone.
SoundModem is used for packet protocols and VARA FM / HF is used for VARA based. Depending on the gateways and operators in your local area you may tend to use one or the other. Learning both is a big benefit. SoundModem is often helpful for troubleshooting basic computer to radio connections.
go to wavetalkers.com and click on the Resources section. You can find getting started content. PDFs and short videos. the Help files for Winlink are also quite helpful. 73 W6AH
Depends on your radio and sound card. Trying to use a built in sound card always seems like a great plan but it can be very difficult to get it to work reliably. Using an external sound card like a signalink or a board designed for the purpose tends to yield much better results.
@@WaveTalkers You fixed my issues with the signalink video TY so much!!! . Im almost on Vara HF. But When I download Silicon Labs USB Driver the Com and LPT doesnt say Silicon Labs it says another (Probably Windows Driver port number 4) but there is a warning Yellow Triangle and my Icom 7300 cannot be seen buy the pc. I uninstalled the SIlicon Labs Drivers successfully but they dont work in the C drive folder I made for it. Did I screw it up? Im hoping to get Vara HF. TY Eric
@@mo-gee7151 Make sure your 7300 is not connected to your PC. Install the driver, and then try rebooting your PC. When it boots back up, Click on Start and type Device Manager. Open the Device manager then turn on your 7300 and connect the USB cable. You should see a the COM ports line appear in Device Manager. Click the + to open that up. and you should see the Silicon Labs listing with a port number. That should be your 7300.
Very good. So much to learn: Winlink, VARA, APRS, JS8CALL, VaraAC, and so much more! And more every day!😎 Thanks for all you do!
Thanks for learning with us @dougbas3980

Hey Jim, glad to hear the episode was helpful to you and thanks for joining us! 73 Chris W6AH
So for an actual grid down EMCOMM situation, you would want to use the Update Table via Radio correct?

When would you use soundmodem vs vara? I guess I don't understand why both are necessary. Thanks

Hi and Great work, TY! If you are not using a signal link what is the proper setting for the speaker and microphones in the sound control panel?

Compatability of the 3 programs with Windows 11?
All 3 work fine in Win11.
@@chrismattia Thanks.
Does Windows 11 require special timjng software, like Network Time Protocol(NTP)? If so, what program is recommended?
No, winlink is not time dependent like FT8 or WSPR. So no time sync is required.
