    Awesome software really when you think about it, no need for an actual hardware tnc. There’s not too many videos or information on line about this software, thanks for your review…. Have you tried the Chess or Checkers with the sound modem software it would be cool to have a game via vhf or hf packet.

    Thank you for the video. I am trying to use Winlink via P2P packet for the next drill, and wanted to know the mode setting on the 991A for the transmission. I saw one article referencing the use of DATA-USB and another referencing FM DATA. Would you tell me the correct mode setting on the Yaesu 991A? Thanks.

    • @AG6AG
      @AG6AG  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Thomas,
      Packet operation is typically done on VHF/UHF FM. The proper setting for that would be FM DATA. If you were using Vara HF then it would be DATA-USB.
      Hope that helps,

      Hi Charlie,
      You can use any sound card. The issue gets a little foggy with PTT. Although you can always turn on VOX, it's much nicer to setup a PTT signal out of the sound device. Thus my recommendation of the Signalink hardware. But there are lots of kits and other devices out there that will do the trick!

    Great try and Really close so that if someone has some HAM knowedge he/she should be able to make the occasional leaps. "Leaps" are necessary because there are just a couple things you leave out. First, it would be nice rather than claim through the magic of video you have a TNC. What is a TNC and how much are they? "Video" has nothing to do with anything and is simply misleading to say so and confusing at best for the newbie. So fixing this wouldn't take much, but it would make your effort here a lot more effective and folks might learn that there is a difference between the similar modes "packet" and "Packet Winlink," a distinction you never mention. Why have a second video that includes Winlink? That unanswered question is your cue to do a little 'splainin right there. Not a lot of 'splainin , but many people new to packet, Winlink, etc. will be so grateful if you bridge that gap too. Since Winlink/Signalink is a glorified Sound Card and can mean you don't need a TNC in your computer system, it would help your goal I think to explain what a TNC is and compare to internal sound cards that are 50 bucks! (forget the magic of video!") and what makes your TNC different from the run of the mill sound card, especially the built in junk we see these days. That would be a good place for a little primer about what a computer user sees when he/she right-clicks the little speaker icon down there, depending on what's installed for a "sound system." A perfect place for a little drawing perhaps of what is going to happen. There's a path from your keyboard, to computer to TNC (if you have one) or a crappy built in "sound system" that mimics a sound card. And this is the place to decide if you ready to add WInlink/Signalink to the equation, or not. Of course there is a difference between "needing a Winlink" and "wanting" a Winlink. But the point here before you launch into the WInlink video is that you're already set up for old packet mode. No Signalink or Winlink needed. Winlink gives you a lot more modes, its own version of packet, because even if you have Winlink you might want to communicate using "ol" ' packet" - the original - which you can do because you only need Soundmodem and Easy Term - both free downloads (thanks for including the site). In a nutshell, clearly distinguish betweeen packet mode and what you need for it vs Winlink/Signalink and Winlink's proprietary version of packet. Folks around here use both.
    There's really not much to add other than the above, you do a great job of zipping through a lot of arcane stuff that is meaningless to the newbie (some settings for example) - so say so! e.g., "Kiss" -- don't worry about what it means the more advanced care to even wonder about that - same for several of the settings I'll go past pretty quickly. Just make sure you do enter the required settings, worry why somebody picked the word "Ackmode" some other time.
    Hope this helps. I am taking the time to write this because by far you come closer to anyone on the net to explaining digital packet comm via 2 Meters than anyone. At the end, you can even mention HF....just in passing of course, its beyond the scope of what you're trying to do.
    All in all, nice job.
    Dave

    • @AG6AG
      @AG6AG  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Dave,
      Both your FT8 and Soundmodem should work together without any setting changes between them. The setting I'm talking about has to do with the Standard COM port not the Enhanced COM port. The Standard COM port only sends PTT commands. For Soundmodem you want it to set the RTS line high to key the radio. WSJT-x uses full CAT controls so it should be configured to use the Enhanced COM port.
      Here are all the settings I use on my FT-991a:
      FT-991/a Menu Settings for Digital:
      062 DATA MODE = OTHERS
      064 OTHER DISP = 1500Hz
      065 OTHER SHIFT = 1500Hz
      066 DATA LCUT FREQ = OFF
      068 DATA HCUT FREQ = OFF
      071 DATA PTT SELECT = RTS
      072 DATA IN SELECT = USB
      077 DATA OUT LEVEL = 15 (You may need to play with this)
      076 FM PKT PTT SELECT = RTS
      077 FM PKT PORT SELECT = USB
      078 FM PKT TX GAIN = 25
      107 SSB OUT LEVEL = 12 (You may need to play with this)
      108 SSB PTT SELECT = RTS
      109 SSB PORT SELECT = USB
      Hope that clears things up a bit.

    Did you know that Soundmodem can be used as a Digipeater ?. To enable it, you have to edit the 'soundmodem.ini' file.
    In the file you will see a line, 'MyDigiCall=', just add your digi callsign after the = sign, and save the file.
    Make sure that Soundmodem is shut down before editing the ini file, if its running, the ini file will be overwritten by the default file when you close it down and your edit will be lost.

    Hi I found your sound modem set up and gave it a try, but first thank you for the video. I am using a FT-991 and running Windows 10 ARM 64. Do you know any way to test why this does not work.

    • @AG6AG
      @AG6AG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thuff,
      If you have hooked your 991(a) up via the USB port and loaded the drivers from the Yaesu site for the com ports, you should have standard and enhanced serial ports for the 991 under device manager. In the 991(a) verify the following:
      Menu #76 "Pkt PTT Select = RTS
      Menu #77 Pkt Port Select = USB
      Menu #79 Pkt Mode = 1200 bps
      Now, check which COM port is your standard port, then under SoundModem settings set PTT Port to that port.
      Explanation: You are telling SoundModem to take the RTS pin high when you want to key the radio. This is actually the only real use for the standard serial port on the 991(a) that I know of.
      Let me know your results!

      Hi Doug,
      I show the Sound Modem setup screen at about 6:20 in the video, but after review I am not really clear on the port settings. I discuss them briefly at about 8:45 when showing the configuration for Easy Term, but never really tie the two together...
      Sound modem listens on network ports for connections from other software. The two connection methods are AGWPE and KISS. Easy Term wants to connect via AGWPE. Here is a little more info that might help.
      In Sound Modem, under Settings, select Devices. You will see the "Server setup" area about half way down. You should have port 8000 set for AGWPE and port 8100 set for KISS, These are the defaults. Remember though, you can set them to any available port on your system if the defaults I've just listed are being used by another program on your PC.
      Then, in Easy Term, under Setting, select Station Setup. At the bottom you should see the "TNC Setup" section. The Host should be 127.0.0.1 for your local PC. The port should match the port you set as the AGWPE port, which is port 8000 by default.
      Hope that helps!

      OK, this is great info. So, you have a TNC. The MobilinkD is not a AFSK sound device as we typically think of one... Sound Modem probably isn't the right choice for what you want to do. The cool thing though is that you have an actual TNC! It may only support KISS but it's a TNC none the less. That means it (the TNC) will do the heavy lifting for you.
      The key here is that you need to find a program that allows you to access and send commands to a KISS interface. This can be a bit challenging.
      I dug this out of google and have never tried to configure it, but I think the AGWPE software is the key to what you want to do...
      denverares.org/resources/denver-ares-digital-strategy/outpost-packet-message-manager-setup/
      This probably will get a bit complicated but I think you can handle it based on your questions. The key here is to understand the pieces that are being put together to make this stuff work.
