In this experimental series, we follow three ordinary South Koreans for one day as they navigate life, love, work - and the cost of housing in one of the world’s most expensive cities.

It’s not that America is less conservative than Korea. It’s just that conservative, is very relative. Every ethnic group, religion and culture throughout the world has very different definitions of “conservative values”or “traditional values”. In some parts of the world, like the US, couples that are dating, traditionally move in with one another before marriage, to test the waters, to see if they can live together and cooperate. A practice-run, to see if they’re eligible to be married.
Can someone clarify the $263000 USD for 2 years of housing? Thats the price of some houses full payment where I live. Nothing super nice and not in a big city but damn. Im currently saving and have been for like 3 years for a 20% deposit on a 1 bedroom apartment for my boyfriend and I for 180-200k canadian outside Edmonton AB. There has to be some kind of mistake if your paying more than the price of buying an apartment forever where I live just for 2 years. Thats insane.
Korean jeon-se is diffrent from rent. Jeon-se deposit is fully returned to tenant when the contract is over.

@@professorthread Landlords can invest in financial instruments like bonds with jeon-se deposits or get interest on savings from banks because jeon-se deposit is a large sum of money
@@user-bt7it2fl5c Also the appreciation of the property over that time is considered profit. However lately house prices have not been going up as in the past and the landlords are losing money.

Minjee’s jeonse payment was US$263,000??? for a two year deposit?? that would be over $10,000 per month…can you clarify???
The way “JEONSE” work is landlord keeps that deposit for 2 years and will refund all the deposit back at the end of the contract. During the period of time, landlord will use the deposit money to do some investments.

@@Gattberserkit is essentially "free", your cost is opportunity cost.
Usually the price for the deposit is between 50% to 80% of the value of the property.

I'm from Israel and paying 3600 NIS (around 1000$) for the monthly rent (utilities like water ,electricity, garbage collection paying separately, something like 450$-500$ a month).
And that's a 35 % of my salary.

Well, I am Korean and I think younger Koreans need to try harder to challenge the traditional values their parent generations have imposed on them. They complain about them--for example, being socially stigmatized when a woman moves into her partner's place before marriage. However, they themselves hold a lot of prejudices as well. Most of them just pretend to defy conservative social values while in reality collaborating with the previous conservative generation. The woman who speaks fluent English living in Korea, well, I guess she has a lot more resources than average Korean girls due to her rich parents. What holds her back is the desire to get financial support from her parents.
