Posting this before actually watchin the whole thing - gonna watch! - but does explain a bunch of it herself. one important thing thats not in this quote is getting a LV bag is a move a lot of artists make with their first record checks.
    her words:
“Someone said to me, ‘You have to make sure this is not going to make you bitter. Bitterness will rob you.’ And at the time I started that song I was in Resentment City, with all these labels trying to sign me and people pressuring me, telling me, ‘you’re never going to see a deal like this again,’ when I just wasn’t ready. So I said to them, ‘If you ever tell me I’m going to miss my chance or I’m going to run out of time, I will pack my bags and go back to Arkansas and I’ll quit singing. Because if I say I’m not ready because my mom just killed herself, then I’m not fucking ready. The answer is no.’ I don’t even own a Louis bag, but when I got my first check from publishing I wrote that line: “Put it in my Louis bag, don’t let it overflow.” It’s for any label that tried to sign me - for all those men talking to me like that. It’s me talking about all the confusion and the disarray I was feeling at the time, and delivering that right to their doorstep. I just sent those bad vibes right back to those motherfuckers.”

Ok i watched! this is gonna be extremely long, but i just had my coffee so here we go:
I *love* how much you are vibing!! I am agreeing with you so thoroughly about every element of this. You had a really beautiful way of describing the energy of the song i’d never thought of; it’s such a deep groove but it is so delicate at the same time!
Yebba is my number one favorite artist by MILES right now for all the reasons you are saying. You’re clearly appreciating so many different aspects of the music - her voice (freakin gorgeous), her use of runs but also of texture changes, the melodies, arrangement, mixing, energy, delivery by the serious crew she runs with - since you pointed him out that’s pino palladino on bass; he’s another unbelievable player for literally everyone; d’angelo, the who, clapton - everyone and everything happening in that room is phenomenal.
and there is SO much more where that came from!
I’d love to share my take on some lyrics from the second verse too. some’s really my take but most of it’s literal
“they cut my palms with paper / made from her autumn leaves”
tragically, yebba’s mom committed suicide in october, which comes up in other songs of hers. record labels saw that she was incredibly talented and also just went through something horrendous - what an opportunity to make great songs! so ‘they’ tried to cash in on her tragedy, to ‘cut her palms’ and make her suffer with the ‘paper’ money they’re offering her to try and turn her mom’s death, ‘autumn leaves’, into record sales for them
“i’m bleeding out disclaimers / into my family tree”
so now yebba’s ‘bleeding’ a warning out because nobody wants to see suicide coming. also the ‘paper’ ‘leaves’ dying and falling from the family ‘tree’, damn
“fuck the interviews to enterprise / i’d rather look into my mother’s eyes / and let it be“
so fuck the fame they’re trying to parasitically heap on her; nothing they could offer would be worth more than just having her mom back
okay. that’s it, the longest youtube comment of all time. clearly you want another so i always suggest just starting from the start and watching ‘my mind,’ a really emotional one from young yebba actually just before her mom’s passing. and ‘evergreen’, the first song she did after. you literally can’t miss though; she’s incredible every time and everyone’s suggestions here are bomb
      Have fun!

I love that song. I agree like a lot of people that the live version is way different and amazing but the record version is also beautiful.
I am a big fan of her, her lyrics, her musicality, her tone, her choices in general.
Her tiny desk is phenomenal 🙌🏾 She surrounds herself with great musicians and BG Vocals as well!
It’s a thing about her live performances that takes you to another level. I either cry or smile, or both listening to Yebba ☺️

Omg you NEEEEED to react to her tiny desk concert it’s phenomenal. Also I completely agree with that comment that you read on the video about her lives being like completely different songs. I generally always prefer the studio versions of songs from artists but man oh man does Yebba create such beautiful live performances, I listen to her lives more than the studio ones now.

Hey thanks for the comment! You know, I should've listened to both in this reaction. The next song of hers I do, I will do both studio version and live. It would be good to know what more to appreciate in a live version of hers as compared to the studio versions

@@Yeedeed Honestly, her live versions are always better than studio.
As someone working with audio and having produced a bit of commercial music, I feel pretty strongly about her not having good enough producers around her for the studio material.
This live version is so much better than the studio version it's not even funny, and same goes for most of her songs. She shines when she can creatively let loose and really be herself. Also the musicians she has with her for this performance takes it to a completely different level, which is something you obviously picked up on.

Yeah, all I can say is react to every single Yebba song, especially the live ones as they’re honestly better than the recorded versions. My mind is usually the starting point and Evergreen. But the live songs from this album are sick.
