- An Amish family from Missouri is using traditional timber framing techniques to build stronger, taller, better beach houses along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Their first house is at Crystal Beach, an area wiped clean by Hurricane Ike in 2008. (#1131, 5/2/09)
I'm from Lebanon, Pennsylvania and live in San Antonio, Texas now.
I'm not that surprised that the Amish are helping out. It's great that they came out to Texas to help rebuild after so much devastation.
I wasn't born when Hurrican Agnes ripped through Pennsylvania in 1972 and I heard so many stories of how they helped rebuilding with the local community back then.
They are a special group of people.
Amish are the best builders... God has blessed them for making family first, and living a simple lifestyle.
Very good carpenters I say. Must be a far German heritage. They also make very nice sheds and garages by the way.
I gotta hire these folks. Their work looks so thorough and so sturdy. They have an awesome work ethic working hard, long hours with precision.
I’m going to look them up and get a quote for a beach house.
Literally more skilled and valuable that 99% of college graduates. Nothing but respect for the Amish

The amish built our home in SW Indiana. I have no doubt but that if is taken care of it will last a couple hundred years, at least. Wonderful craftsmen.

I used to be Amish, but we did not build houses like that, but barns are similar to that. Interesting that they are using that style on a house. But the beach houses need that extra something to make sure the wind can't just destroy the place.
That beach is beautiful we were there last summer... The Amish know what their doing and do it to perfection.

Always the master builders of everything. I've seen grand carriages they build for weddings to be horse drawn for people to buy. Also the most elegant gazebos the sell at House of Stars in Madison N.C
i have the highest regards and respect for the amish. i myself was raised im many ways that are not diffrent from the amish, plowing with horses, working the manure spreader (ugh) etc. home made bread. can goods head cheese. the only thing that i can see where people on that beach should really think about building a round concrete house, proven to stand up to any hurricane. dome houses rule.

Timber framing goes back even further. There are still timber framed buildings from 6 and 7 hundred years ago standing in Europe, and with no nails holding them together
it is my wish to say Thank you to Mr.Danny Schwartz . I honestly wish there was more of you back before 1992 with Hurricane Andrew My family had six family home was damaged beyond repair so we moved to Central Florida which I do not like the construction of these homes
The Amish are good wholesome people and tremendous buiding skills. i wish I knew how to build as sturdy and solid as they do. Good story.

I don't necessarily agree with all the rues in the Amish religion, but there is no denying that they are honest hard working people with many values we could learn from.

The Amish has a wonderful way of life, much like the way i was brought up. Get up early in the morning, work your ass of in the woods / Sea / Fields, go home for a huge feast, work some more and go to bed feeling like you've actually done something. Todays kids are nothing but spoiled brats and they could all use 6 months in a working camp. And learn what respect for fellow man and a hard days work really is.

In tropical lands, ppl build concrete home. Will withstand storms, wind and rain throughout the year. And yes, there is no season for these shiat in the tropics.... they will a visit every other day.

I don't know, any surface or structure can be moved. Brick walls crack faster then wooden ones. Wood is more flexible. They both are really good. In hurricanes it's either the wind or the water that breaks it. They proberbly are equal.
It was a fun place to go. When I was in Houston, rent a beach house. The long nights on the beach, the fires, moon lit swims. Okay some skinny dipping to, late at night. I hope it comes back. Last summer it was still bad down there. It's a slow process. Like he said, they'll be back. I will be back too

For people wondering why they're using power tools. Amish can use power tools if the job requires it. For example, they might even use a computer if need be for a certain task or function. They don't totally outlaw use of tech. They're just selective of what's ok and won't corrupt them.
Chris Fuller - I thought that’s only the Mennonites.
It depends upon what sect they may chosen. Some outlaw buttons in favor of hook-and-eye clothing. Over the years, there have been some differences-which is entirely natural, after all. So, there are sects, within sects, etc.
Mennonites, who were historically Amish, drive cars, but they must not be ostentatious. If the Amish must go a distance, they can get other people to drive them. They can send their children to college. I think there is a Mennonite College in SW Virginia.
This kind of work is worth alot.
Amish have been building outside their community for a long time. There are ways around the no electric deal, the young are even allowed to drive a car etc. All we see are the ones that are in the post cards. You have a choice to follow the strict rules placed down, these homes will be solid for a long time, not so sure about the beach that its built on.

Why are you guys filled with so much hate. Can we not respect their lifestyle like they respect ours? I think its wonderful that they've preserved traditions like these. Even more so since they're using it to help people who have lost their homes due to hurricanes.

There are many different groups with in the Amish community. Some eschew modern inventions alltogether while others allow them so long as they are plain. The latter type might allow automobiles for instance so long as they were highly functional, black in colour and had no air con or radio.

Yes, and they explain that keeping their family together is more important than bending a couple rules.
If you look at the house itself, it's being built traditionally.. they just need the aid of power tools to quicken the process and rake in some cash.

How did this house fare during Hurricane Harvey?
From a design standpoint, would the timber framing work as well, or even better using stronger materials such as metals and stuff, or would that cause problems?
Amish are awesome people, when you say bad things about them you only point out your own shortcomings.
Certain sects of Amish do, indeed, use electricity. And some sects of Mennonites do not. Also, most Amish and Mennonites will use power equipment at work, even if they don't have electricity at home.

This is sweet an all, but the reality is that the Amish have never built houses to deal with hurricanes. We generally do not use this method as timber is too expensive these days and there isn't enough to go around to build all these houses in this manner.
Despite that, a hurricane can, and for the most part, still will blow a house like that to pieces . The Amish simply have not designed their engineering with hurricanes in mind as they are "farmers," not sea front fishermen.
Yeah you have a point, I read they´re not even allowed to use buttons because they are too austentacious, a power tool seems a bit fancier than a button.
Timber fraing is very very strong, and time tested; The Japanese used it and their houses were earthquake proof, but it's really just a personal choice. Concrete is very strong too, as is steel, but it wouldn't look the same. I think they chose it for the beauty as well as it's strength.
Earthquakes can shatter reinforced concrete.
There is a reason Japanese high rise buildings use dampeners at their basement level. That alone would be cost prohibitive to build homes.

"Will it come back" ? Uhhh, yes, but not with homes that were built to withstand 100 mph wind. This Amish built home is extremely strong, but any house built within 100 miles of the ocean should be built to standards which can withstand 150 mph wind for a duration of 12 hours. Expensive, but what are the options? Go through this every 25 years?

Doesn't matter how strong the house is built, my dad actually does timber frames for a local log cabin company, so I am familiar with them, the pylons are what need to be good and strong so they can take the impact from other debris crashing into them, as you can see there where many destroyed houses that where on pylons and it was broken pylons that caused there destruction.
+DanielRichards644 Honestly, reinforced concrete columns wouldn't even cost that much and they're quite easy to do yourself.
