The tone of this piece is interesting, It no longer sounds like a first level/zone in a game (for S&K). This sounds more like a calm and fun, yet still funky, bouncy, and fast beat midway point after preventing the death egg form launching. You get to relax and have a bit of fun for a reward, but you’re still on the move because eggman is still out there and the death egg is still on the island and can (and will) be launched again! I will miss that “tumble” in the begging, to symbolize the death egg falling from the sky.
That's a very provoking song. It feels more like nighttime to me, or a crystal cave for some reason. I COULD be wrong, but I'd have to see it at play. Mushroom hill has all that bouncing theme in the mushrooms, so why not make it "bouncier"?
Love the new direction, as always! It's like if you brought the flavor of the LakeFeperd games to the Genesis, that's what the vibe reminds me of. And that friggin' rules.
it's so well done, man. i love how a lot of the song feels like something someone can hum easily. the bridge into the loop just brought it all together, wrapped up with a neat little bow and all. (i don't even want to listen my version after this)
the moment those sn7 chords kicked in i knew you'd been listening to a lot of yu-no recently. i love how off-the-wall your inspirations can end up being and how you fit them into new contexts to make them feel fresh again
@@jakighcolburnchannel3584i'm genuinely surprised no one has poured all of Tay's alternate songs in there yet! i think i might be able to do it... just hope he's fine with it lol (i'll be sure to credit of course)
This sounds amazing! I wish you the best of luck in your finals, crazy how you could make bangers in the middle of them Don't worry about the song don't being close to the original, imo the charm of the alternate OST is that it just a completely different thing but still maintains the vibe of the level
This is the kind of grooviness I need in my life, thank you for blessing us once again. I look forward to Act 2 as well as thoae jingles you mentioned.
Positives: THE START. The start is absolutely amazing. I am always a huge fan of the starts of your alternate series. Just hit like a truck. The bass line is absolutely amazing. I love the chaotic energy it gives, as well as a nice, elastic feel, like you’re jumping on mushrooms. The instrument choice. The instruments all give of the bouncy, friendly atmosphere which reminds me of bouncing off mushrooms. Negatives: I don’t like the repetition. I understand that you’re trying to get these done quickly, but when the main melody is the same for the first 2 mins of the song, it does drive me away. It sucks to come up with a whole new pattern to sink into, especially because the pattern itself is very good, but it would add so much. The ending section felt out of place. It felt like a celebration, of all things. And that’s pretty odd, considering what mushroom hill is in the story. Either it’s the first zone you play, or it’s in the middle. So why is there a celebration at the end? While it should be a positive atmosphere, it should feel more like the beginning/second act of an odyssey, not the end. Suggestions: I’d suggest changing up the compositional structure you stick to. Not sure if this is just traditional in music, but I notice that you do a lot of (main melody) (distinct, short set of notes) (main melody) (another distinct short set of notes). I’m not sure if you know what I mean, since I don’t know the music terms, but if you do I would try changing it up a bit. All of this advice comes from listening to this a ludicrous number of times, so it’s safe to say that overall, this fucking slaps. I love your work.
in response for the negatives: 1) trust me when i say that i'm not deliberately trying to pump out music in a week, it's probably something to do with my hyperactivity/hyper fixation with making music sometimes. ideas just come to mind and when i think they're ready i release and move on to the next one. not exactly great, and it sounds like my compositions have a lack of care. they probably do, tbh. 2) a lot of the s&k ost is actually just tributes for composers and arrangers that i like, this one being for ryu takami and ryu umemoto and their work on yu-no and grounseed. i specifically referenced the movement themes from yu-no, which are repetitive, but it serves for a different context as yu-no is a visual novel for the pc-98. having said this i understand why people would have a problem with the repetition. i probably overdid it, even, but i'm not entirely sure if it's the source material/ references that i use or just me being me. 3) a lot of my music is also heavily influenced by the music i listen to at the time, so i usually put similar things to what i hear in personal compositions, or i kinda just pull ideas out of my ass. the celebratory part wasn't really necessary like you said, but i needed a better conclusion other than just repeating the same chord progressions and basslines over again. it's unfitting for some and i understand that fact very well, but i'd rather live with it than lament since there was nothing better i could do myself. 4) yes the composition style that you mentioned is prevalent in my music and i apologize that it's stale but it's really all i've known and noticed in most of the songs i've heard, so i just follow my assumptions and build my way up as i go. in a way it's a dollar store kind of call and response writing, which is what you're referring to, i believe. in conclusion, i'm sorry that i suck at songwriting lol. i barely write any songs here, i just arrange. realistically speaking i'm not inherently original at all thanks for the advice though
@@johntayjinf I’m glad you do recognize some places you could work on, but please don’t beat yourself up about it. You’ve clearly put in a lot of work into music, and you’re at a point where your music sounds very distinct from other Sonic music channels out there. You’ve honestly become one of my favorite channels to listen to, and I think you should know that you’ve got a really great corner of the internet with you. And also, I was comparing the piece to the original mushroom hill for some of my negatives, so it’s obviously an unfair comparison. Shoot for the stars even if you wont make it, yknow?
@@johntayjinf, I think @blankedout1862 has a point. I think this is a better Angel Island theme. It has that "dreamy", "cozy" quality that Angel Island needs. If it were me, this would actually replace Angel Island (Act 1) theme.
I love the bass being basically borrowed from the flying battery alts, as a bit of foreshadowing (something nobody is talking about for some reason) and i also love how it has a chill but slightly uneasy vibe, like sonic knows hes okay but theres still work to be done. even if the death egg crash landed, theres still the looming threat of eggman.
anytime John tay uploads about sonic 3, it's going to be a banger. now to wait for someone on game banana to make another music mod or figure out how to mod the game myself
Mushroom Hill Zone? more like Mushroom Funk Zone. this gives off some really cool, "you finally beat Eggman again, so even though he'll probably come back up again, you might aswell just take a moment to cool down" vibes.
yeah this is great, definitely fits more when you're playing S3K as a complete game after the midpoint climax of launch base, mushroom hill here acts as a way to catch your breath before the action picks up again
this music really took the edge off restarting mhz1 over and over in sonic 3 air while trying to get all the super emeralds (seriously, i’m gonna be seeing some of those special stages in my nightmares)
This makes it sound way more like the half-way point that it’s supposed to be.
agreed
I haven’t seen ANYONE acknowledge the fact that this is clearly referencing Flying Battery and it’s so good

In exchange the song is now nearly perfectly syncs for if you spindash to the knuckles cutscene and jump down without his theme interupting
Huh, well ain’t that neat
So this is what if the McDonald's toy got delayed
The bass line is easily the highlight of this song, no question. It's undeniably _funky._
WHAT I WAS THINKING!!
Even funkier and "bouncier" than prototype Mushroom Hill’s (er, Mushroom Valley), heh.

It's a very happy song, great for the stage with the swings and bouncy mushrooms
Wait, hold on... this bassline... was it inspired by Daft Punk's "Voyager"?
Also that Freedom Planet 2 + JoJo lick in the middle is just MMMMMMM

with the power of this playlist and sonic triple trouble's ost, my ears are unstoppable

Your style is a fantastic way of keeping Ryu Umemoto-type sounds alive. 💖
ngl this music sounds pretty good
A much relaxing funky theme after the Big Arms fight.
The bass, piano, and guitar make me feel something magical happening.
Because Mushroom Hill Zone is set in a forest, having the sound of birds chirping right before the drums start was a missed opportunity in my opinion.
1:32 Dragon Valley…but I almost thought it was Hopes & Dreams for a second >_>
There goes my playlist for a while. God this is good.
