Prokofiev is freaking brilliant. Austere, harsh, imposing, yet gorgeous, love this piece. The criss crossing and diagonal movements of the gendered groups and the harshness of the horns makes me think of a living chess board. Fighting and strategy illustrated in an abstract modern sense with cold stone pieces.
He came to the US and wrote a lot of scores for movies in the 40's and 50's, I believe. Sometimes when you watch an old movie you will hear background music you will immediately notice has his fingerprints on it.
@@amywalker7515 Kind of like how you hear Wagner/Wagner's influence all over old LoonyToons because the composers were all Germans/German-Jews who fled to the U.S. and were hired by Warner Bros. as Hitler ascended.
I adore Nurejev's choreography, which is the best I know. The translation of Prokoviev's expressive piece of music into dance is unique. Thank you for sharing!
Prokofiev's been a favorite of mine for 60 years - and I'm especially fond of his score for "Romeo and Juliet." The music for the Dance of the Knights is ominous and elegant at the same time - and Nureyev's choreography only emphasizes these qualities further.
Prokofiev has been on my shortlist of favorite composers since I first heard “Peter and the Wolf” at age 4, with Sterling Holloway narrating. Even Prokofiev’s surname sounded like music to me at that age, the first time I remember being able to hear individual instruments as part of the whole. Prokofiev was so versatile, and his orchestrations so rich and unique, positively lush sounding!
Took the words out of my mouth! I found Prokofiev through watching the Peter and the Wolf cartoon as a toddler. It's what made me fall in love with bassoon. Then I fell in love marching to three oranges. I got to see his Violin Concerto No. 1 performed live early this year too.
Magnificent sumptuous grandiose and so terrifying !! All the power of the Capulets and their hatred for the Montagues is expressed in this remarkable and brilliant choreography by Nureyev with the hypnotic and almost scary music of Prokofiev...Brrrr !!

How the men were seperate dancing and with the women dancing... THATS is how you dance to this song... Its a simple vain song with lots of power. Very nice!
Totally, I always go to a ball hosted by the nobility in full metal jacket... 😂. tbf, I saw a great version of Prokofiev's R&J a few years ago now, and all the men had Kendo sticks which they beat into the ground on the beat - it really worked. Very... butch 😳
@@ub85zwq They are. Just not the part of the beat *you're* listening to. The emphasis in this choreography is on the up beat where their knee is raised, not when the foot is placed down. I suspect it's deliberately less obvious to avoid the predictable stompy choreography that often goes with Prokofiev's version... 🤔

I guess the heading was a bit misleading. I saw Nureyev several times when he danced in DC with various ballet companies. He was beyond description. I love seeing his work again on TH-cam.
I think Nureyev danced Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo & Juliet before creating is own coreography. Nureyev and Fonteyn were the original cast in MacMillan's coreography.

I had the same experience with Peter And The Wolf. I always loved listening to that when I was a kid.
And you haven't smoked ganja yet when you listened))

This music is so grand you could fall off the stage and look graceful
Histrionically decadent! Brilliant! Lady Capulet and Tybald (Clotilde Vayer | Charles Jude) are magnificent!

Even though I think the "more common" version of this is great, I absolutely adore Nureyev's version, I always find myself coming back to it.
Rudolf Nureyev's production of Sergei Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet premiered at the London Coliseum on 2 June 1977.
This is my favorite interpretation. The dramatic dancing perfectly matches the dramatic music
Have you seen the Bolshoi Ballet version, now that one step better, just my personal opinion.

The music is hauntingly beautiful. A favorite of mine 🕊🇺🇲💕

A thoughtful but I daresay chilling interpretation. Finally I'm seeing this the way I thought it ought be. Brilliant! Bravo!

Gorgeous music and dancing!
Grand battlements fourth position turn❤

IMHO, this dance should be performed by armored men with swords
So how could one move and dance in armour and swords..

They'd have to dial up the volume on the orchestra to cover the clanking.
Yes the dance of the knights nice play on words there
This is the best version by far. I wish they didn’t cut before the women brang the swords
Nureyev the Great. He is sorely missed.
Pure beauty...
The melody of sneaking into lover's bedroom under cover of darkness
Prokofiev ❤

Jonathan- Indeed, interesting observation!
I'm with you, the ballet is my favorite version as long as Juliet is dance by someone under 50! Love the music
Somptueux !!!!
It’s amazing! ❤️
Foi o maior bailarino de sua época! Fantástico!
Best choreo for Dance of the Knight ! ❤

Charles Jude plays Tybald. He is the son of Lady Capulet's brother (Clotilde Vayer, here partner in that movement). In fact he is Romeo's rival!
