Not always, but quite often, So Hyang begins a performance in her angelic voice -- breathy, clear, precise, and reactors all think how beautiful it is, how like a princess she sounds. Then she releases her inner monster (in a good way). This is always a wonderful ride. She has more vocal tools in her repertoire than any other female singer I have ever come across. You pickup on her Power , Passion and Emotional release ! And you let go of your Anxiety, Hurt and Frustration and a Peace comes over us,because we for a while at least are Free from Worry! I call her the Korean Soul Repair Woman, on a mission to fulfill her promise to God, for saving her from cancer and through many bouts of Pneumonia still being able to sing for Us and for God! She is driven but not by Money or Fame ! She needs money and it’s nice to know all the years practicing your art you are good but God and Us come first ! It’s why she has politely turned to big record Companies down - 1. Because they would leave her with little time for Gospel Ministry, Charities, and Family. 2. Because of her health she would not be able to do long concerts , night after night ! Besides her own parents who divorce while she was in High School , her Father-in-Law is her manager and goes everywhere with her! Her Mother-in-Law also helps Manager her and is her Best friend, she Never refers to them or her Husbands siblings as anything but Mom, Dad or Sisters, she love all and they Love her! She joined Her Husbands Family Band( POS) as a teen because they had been practicing for along time but had no lead Singer, so she became their lead singer! Her Father-in-Law immediately said You must save the girl at all costs , if they want children there are many in Korea that need homes ( both her In- Laws are Ministers ) , so they did! When she awoke she was a little shocked but immediately thank God and her Family for saving her Life! One of her Husband sister was the Guitarist in Joe Jonas’s Band and all of the sisters have spend time living in the USA! SoHyang has visited them in the USA , and as a band They visited The USA many times sing in Churches or at Religious function ! SoHyang has in fact sang in over 50 countries with the band or solo later! POS has long since been disbanded! I would suggest your next reaction to be a Performance she did after just being released from hospital for Pneumonia and told by Doctors to not sing but actually try not to even talk much for the next few days ! She knew people would be at the Performance and needing to forget about their pain or sorrows, so decided to try to Perform anyway, knowing it could be the end of her voice! ( during one period she had 8 bouts with Pneumonia Over a period of 2 1/2 years! ) ( what with the cancer and Hepatitis she cause possible through a blood transfusion her immune system has been weakened ) Even during the peak of COVID in 2020 she join a TV show that featured her and a few other artists doing a Busking type Show, to lift the Spirits of Koreans or anyone at the shows or watching on TV ( audiences where selected through a draw and kept small ( 30- 40 ) depending on Venue and masks mandatory and social distancing enforced) SoHyang must have been nervous to join because if she caught the disease she would be in serious trouble) these were some of her Best Performance- though I don’t know why I say that she has had more then 40 spectaculars Performances! Many many vocal coaches say that she is the best female vocalist on the planet. Nobody is cleaner and as polished in all the techniques as SoHyang. You won’t find her on the billboard charts. She sings because she loves to. She is not in it for fortune or fame, yet she is the best ever. Notice too, no ear monitors on her ears. She now wears them but this video was many years ago. She is so pitch perfect she never needed them. Now due to age, she needs to hear better but she still sings just as good and never uses auto tune. Her live performances are like a studio recording they are so flawless.

When God bestows his blessing on someone to spread his message of love and forgiveness to the world, there is simply no stopping it. Sohyang is that someone, kept humble by personal trials only magnifies the message. You only have to witness the reactions of so many who experience Him through her to know it feels to have your soul moved.
Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south. Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain, especially right after the first time you hear her sing. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 46 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 46! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷♂ Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches by the boat load are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times. I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. When you add a Super Star talent like Sohyang to the show, everyone who watches it is quite rightly blown away. 👀😮💥👌😎🎸🎙👽🛸💖💖💖
You should make a distinction between "Arirang" and "Arirang Alone". Also, Sohyang's performance is a reimagined arrangement of the folk tune to fit the requirements of the competition, Immortal Songs 2.

@ToddSauve: Consider comparing the lyrics of the popular version of Arirang sung in Seoul against the lyrics of Arirang Alone. For 600 years, they didn't sing about reunification by alluding to the tallest mountains of the South and the North, nor did they refer to an island in dispute with Japan. Those are relatively recent issues. To complicate things, there's Arirang the word, the 2 main variants of the legend, the dozens of regional versions of the traditional song with lots of local variations, and then there's Arirang Alone, sung in the traditional manner. Sohyang did a complete rearrangement for the show such that many Koreans didn't love it immediately -- she didn't win this episode. Her competition only did slight changes to the traditional presentation of their acts, but Sohyang made Arirang Alone very different, and that likely shocked the audience who didn't quite feel comfortable as they voted to give her a moderate score. The winner sang her song in a relatively traditional way, and simply added a bunch of men in the background to do a little bit of choreography depicting elements of the song. But as the years have passed, it seems folks slowly recognized her performance had outshined the others. [Consider how Hendrix played the US National Anthem -- that shocked Americans, many of whom found it grating on their nerves. I'm not a fan of his version, but it bothers me less these days.]

@@oahuhawaii2141 Exactly. But South Korea changed their national laws last year to calculate age in the way the vast majority of the world does, and now you are born at 0 years of age. Of course if people want to calculate in the traditional way they are free to, except for government purposes.

When they think of age, they automatically think in the old way, and have to remind themselves to adjust for the "new" way for gov-related stuff. Also, when considering the ages of peer groups, Koreans try to equalize by year, so they group people by calendar year. In school, for example, everyone born in 2014 -- from Jan 1 to Dec 31 -- is considered within the same age group, as if all were born on Jan 1. Thus, when 2024 began, everyone born in 2014 became 11 years old. A person born on 2014 Dec 31 is a year older than someone born on 2015 Jan 1. This is yet another quirk of age calculations by Koreans.
Not exactly. The word and the folklore of "Arirang" may be over 600 years old. And the many variations of the folksong "Arirang" has come to symbolize many meanings to Koreans and their sense of identity. However, "Arirang Alone" is a modern adaption expressing the hopes for reunification of the South and the North to form one Korea again. I believe it was a father who, on his deathbed, pleaded with his son, the songwriter, to find his siblings once the South and the North are reunited, and to tell them he didn't abandon them during the Korean War. They were separated by circumstances. He tirelessly searched for them, and regrets his failure. That makes "Arirang Alone" ever the more poignant.
The only woman that deserves to share the stage with Dimash, which is why she’s often referred to as Dimash’s ‘queen’. You should check out her back story which will explain ‘why’ she sings & her aims & why she isn’t the world wide superstar that her taken surely merits. You may struggle gettin your head around my next comment having just watched her performance of ‘arirang alone’ but trust me, this beautiful human being can literally sing any genre, rock,pop, blues/jazz, obv the big power ballads ( the only woman who can make a Whitney song better!) & she can RAP, yes RAP, but her heart is with gospel & elements of gospel can be heard in many of her arrangements of songs that aren’t usually associated with the genre in their original format ( sohyang is responsible for all arrangements of all performances, she is so talented musically, not just vocally) & there are video’s available showing all the above. It is pretty obvious that after you’re first experience of this gorgeous soul, you are gonna wanna dive head first in to the amazing world of Sohyang so I would highly recommend that you take your future choice from one of the Sohyang fans that I’m sure, if not already done, will be sending you a very extensive list of performances, complete with the links. These will ensure that you get the right performances. Many people, myself included, usually start with ‘bridge over troubled water’, ‘arirang alone’ or a bonkers rendition of ‘I have nothing’ from the DMC festival, a performance that when seen by the writer of the song, David Foster, led him to track her down himself & has since performed with her many times. I would say that ‘bridge over troubled water’ is probably the start for the majority, but it’s usually one of the 3 songs mentioned. I know you will be bombarded with requests for sohyang so I would just like to say it doesn’t really matter in which order you see the performances cos tbh, this woman doesn’t know how to do anything but AMAZING & as you have discovered today, she has direct access to your heart, even when singing in a language you’re not familiar with. Yes there maybe subtitles ( watch sohyang via Vimeo to ensure eng subs) but I have heard so many people say, as well as myself, that they were so enchanted by sohyang performing that they totally forgot to look at the subs anyway, which is how it should be at the very highest level, music transcends language & I am English, it’s the only language I speak, yet time after time, sohyang has reduced me to tears when I haven’t understood one word of what she is singing, and it’s just not the odd performance, it’s time after time after time, so don’t ever be put off by something in her native Korean. I was goin to say that you wouldn’t have heard the performance you just have if you’d done that but I suppose ‘arirang alone’ doesn’t look Korean but don’t avoid anything written in Korean because you will be the one that loses out. Also, sohyang speaks English, she actually speaks a fair few languages tbh, has a degree in French, so she doesn’t sing with an obvious accent that so many of the Asian singers do, even Dimash, I love Dimash so much but he does have a problem with his accent when singing in English. Not always, but quite often, So Hyang begins a performance in her angelic voice -- breathy, clear, precise, and reactors all think how beautiful it is, how like a princess she sounds. Then she releases her inner monster (in a good way). This is always a wonderful ride. She has more vocal tools in her repertoire than any other female singer I have ever come across. Thanks for the reaction. Bridge Over Troubled Water (KBS TV version) or I Have Nothing (DMC Festival) are both incredible performances. Her Live performances are simply unmatched.

You pickup on her Power , Passion and Emotional release ! And you let go of your Anxiety, Hurt and Frustration and a Peace comes over us,because we for a while at least are Free from Worry! I call her the Korean Soul Repair Woman, on a mission to fulfill her promise to God, for saving her from cancer and through many bouts of Pneumonia still being able to sing for Us and for God! She is driven but not by Money or Fame ! She needs money and it’s nice to know all the years practicing your art you are good but God and Us come first ! It’s why she has politely turned to big record Companies down - 1. Because they would leave her with little time for Gospel Ministry, Charities, and Family.
2. Because of her health she would not be able to do long concerts , night after night ! Besides her own parents who divorce while she was in High School , her Father-in-Law is her manager and goes everywhere with her! Her Mother-in-Law also helps Manager her and is her Best friend, she Never refers to them or her Husbands siblings as anything but Mom, Dad or Sisters, she love all and they Love her! She joined Her Husbands Family Band( POS) as a teen because they had been practicing for along time but had no lead Singer, so she became their lead singer! Eventually fell in love with each other and decided to married! Both say that they felt pressure from God to hurry and marry! They did and as a result of the Physical the Doctor performed on her, Cancer was detected in 1 overy! During surgery cancer was also found in the other! The Doctor called her Husband and his Parents as hers were not there at the time to a meeting just outside the Operating Room ! Her Father-in-Law immediately said You must save the girl at all costs , if they want children there are many in Korea that need homes ( both her In- Laws are Ministers ) , so they did! When she awoke she was a little shocked but immediately thank God and her Family for saving her Life! One of her Husband sister was the Guitarist in Joe Jonas’s Band and all of the sisters have spend time living in the USA! SoHyang has visited them in the USA , and as a band They visited The USA many times sing in Churches or at Religious function ! SoHyang has in fact sang in over 50 countries with the band or solo later! POS has long since been disbanded!
I would suggest your next reaction to be a Performance she did after just being released from hospital for Pneumonia and told by Doctors to not sing but actually try not to even talk much for the next few days !
She knew people would be at the Performance and needing to forget about their pain or sorrows, so decided to try to Perform anyway, knowing it could be the end of her voice! ( during one period she had 8 bouts with Pneumonia
Over a period of 2 1/2 years! ) ( what with the cancer and Hepatitis she cause possible through a blood transfusion her immune system has been weakened ) Even during the peak of COVID in 2020 she join a TV show that featured her and a few other artists doing a Busking type Show, to lift the Spirits of Koreans or anyone at the shows or watching on TV ( audiences where selected through a draw and kept small ( 30- 40 ) depending on Venue and masks mandatory and social distancing enforced) SoHyang must have been nervous to join because if she caught the disease she would be in serious trouble) these were some of her Best Performance- though I don’t know why I say that she has had more then 40 spectaculars Performances!

Many many vocal coaches say that she is the best female vocalist on the planet. Nobody is cleaner and as polished in all the techniques as SoHyang. You won’t find her on the billboard charts. She sings because she loves to. She is not in it for fortune or fame, yet she is the best ever. Notice too, no ear monitors on her ears. She now wears them but this video was many years ago. She is so pitch perfect she never needed them. Now due to age, she needs to hear better but she still sings just as good and never uses auto tune. Her live performances are like a studio recording they are so flawless.
Sohyang deserves world recognition. Her voice is out of this world with a divine healing power to touch the soul. Great reaction.

Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south.
Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain, especially right after the first time you hear her sing. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 46 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 46! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷♂
Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches by the boat load are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times.
I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. When you add a Super Star talent like Sohyang to the show, everyone who watches it is quite rightly blown away. 👀😮💥👌😎🎸🎙👽🛸💖💖💖
You should make a distinction between "Arirang" and "Arirang Alone". Also, Sohyang's performance is a reimagined arrangement of the folk tune to fit the requirements of the competition, Immortal Songs 2.

@ToddSauve: Consider comparing the lyrics of the popular version of Arirang sung in Seoul against the lyrics of Arirang Alone. For 600 years, they didn't sing about reunification by alluding to the tallest mountains of the South and the North, nor did they refer to an island in dispute with Japan. Those are relatively recent issues.
To complicate things, there's Arirang the word, the 2 main variants of the legend, the dozens of regional versions of the traditional song with lots of local variations, and then there's Arirang Alone, sung in the traditional manner. Sohyang did a complete rearrangement for the show such that many Koreans didn't love it immediately -- she didn't win this episode. Her competition only did slight changes to the traditional presentation of their acts, but Sohyang made Arirang Alone very different, and that likely shocked the audience who didn't quite feel comfortable as they voted to give her a moderate score. The winner sang her song in a relatively traditional way, and simply added a bunch of men in the background to do a little bit of choreography depicting elements of the song. But as the years have passed, it seems folks slowly recognized her performance had outshined the others. [Consider how Hendrix played the US National Anthem -- that shocked Americans, many of whom found it grating on their nerves. I'm not a fan of his version, but it bothers me less these days.]

Millions of Koreans did the age calculation in the traditional manner for all their lives, and can't switch their way of thinking easily. When they think of age, they automatically think in the old way, and have to remind themselves to adjust for the "new" way for gov-related stuff.
Also, when considering the ages of peer groups, Koreans try to equalize by year, so they group people by calendar year. In school, for example, everyone born in 2014 -- from Jan 1 to Dec 31 -- is considered within the same age group, as if all were born on Jan 1. Thus, when 2024 began, everyone born in 2014 became 11 years old. A person born on 2014 Dec 31 is a year older than someone born on 2015 Jan 1. This is yet another quirk of age calculations by Koreans.

Not exactly. The word and the folklore of "Arirang" may be over 600 years old. And the many variations of the folksong "Arirang" has come to symbolize many meanings to Koreans and their sense of identity. However, "Arirang Alone" is a modern adaption expressing the hopes for reunification of the South and the North to form one Korea again.
I believe it was a father who, on his deathbed, pleaded with his son, the songwriter, to find his siblings once the South and the North are reunited, and to tell them he didn't abandon them during the Korean War. They were separated by circumstances. He tirelessly searched for them, and regrets his failure.
That makes "Arirang Alone" ever the more poignant.

You should check out her back story which will explain ‘why’ she sings & her aims & why she isn’t the world wide superstar that her taken surely merits. You may struggle gettin your head around my next comment having just watched her performance of ‘arirang alone’ but trust me, this beautiful human being can literally sing any genre, rock,pop, blues/jazz, obv the big power ballads ( the only woman who can make a Whitney song better!) & she can RAP, yes RAP, but her heart is with gospel & elements of gospel can be heard in many of her arrangements of songs that aren’t usually associated with the genre in their original format ( sohyang is responsible for all arrangements of all performances, she is so talented musically, not just vocally) & there are video’s available showing all the above.
It is pretty obvious that after you’re first experience of this gorgeous soul, you are gonna wanna dive head first in to the amazing world of Sohyang so I would highly recommend that you take your future choice from one of the Sohyang fans that I’m sure, if not already done, will be sending you a very extensive list of performances, complete with the links. These will ensure that you get the right performances. Many people, myself included, usually start with ‘bridge over troubled water’, ‘arirang alone’ or a bonkers rendition of ‘I have nothing’ from the DMC festival, a performance that when seen by the writer of the song, David Foster, led him to track her down himself & has since performed with her many times. I would say that ‘bridge over troubled water’ is probably the start for the majority, but it’s usually one of the 3 songs mentioned. I know you will be bombarded with requests for sohyang so I would just like to say it doesn’t really matter in which order you see the performances cos tbh, this woman doesn’t know how to do anything but AMAZING & as you have discovered today, she has direct access to your heart, even when singing in a language you’re not familiar with. Yes there maybe subtitles ( watch sohyang via Vimeo to ensure eng subs) but I have heard so many people say, as well as myself, that they were so enchanted by sohyang performing that they totally forgot to look at the subs anyway, which is how it should be at the very highest level, music transcends language & I am English, it’s the only language I speak, yet time after time, sohyang has reduced me to tears when I haven’t understood one word of what she is singing, and it’s just not the odd performance, it’s time after time after time, so don’t ever be put off by something in her native Korean. I was goin to say that you wouldn’t have heard the performance you just have if you’d done that but I suppose ‘arirang alone’ doesn’t look Korean but don’t avoid anything written in Korean because you will be the one that loses out. Also, sohyang speaks English, she actually speaks a fair few languages tbh, has a degree in French, so she doesn’t sing with an obvious accent that so many of the Asian singers do, even Dimash, I love Dimash so much but he does have a problem with his accent when singing in English.
You best go get a good rest now you’ve stepped on the sohyang train because this is one trip you’re never gonna want to end( Kleenex may prove to be a smart purchase to accompany you😂😂)

Hi. When you will have a little time (after hearing at least 20 Sohyang's songs 😊 ) you can try Park Ki Young, she's amazing too. Yeonan Pier is just a suggestion for you.
Park Ki Young is so underrated, it's unbelievable, and she's on the same level as So Hyang, IMHO.
