Oh, Gav, you are too harsh with yourself. You have a voice and an identity. Even if you read someone else's favorite, you still bring yourself to the experience with your own opinion and point of view. I'm reading Witch Hat Atelier because of you. I read Train to Impossible Places because of you. Whenever I read a book that you recommend, I feel like I am doing a buddy read. You bring joy, humor, and friendship to the book experience. You are a treasure to the booktube community!!!

for what it’s worth, your videos played a huge part in getting me out of my reading slump! i went from reading 15 books last year to 104 this year, many of which were books you recommended! i cant wait to see where you take the channel in 2023 ❤️

Gav, Gav, Gav…my journey back in to books and reading started because of you and your recommendations. Don’t be so tough on yourself, loads of us get our recommendations from you. I have seen it appear in other peoples videos of the books they are reading and collecting and those who know you will know that it is down to you as to why they are. Book reviewer/ Booktuber wise you have nothing to worry about there either as you are fabulous. You are going above and beyond with your adventures that you tie books in to as well and 2023 is going to be a monumental year for you and your channel and I am so excited for what you are doing and we can follow you on your adventures 🤗🥳🤗🥳
You are bloody amazing and you have got to the end of the year by reclaiming your space, recreating your library and you can get back to being you. You can spread your reader and creator wings and you will absolutely soar. 2023 is definitely the year for people to be finding out about and following your channel as it is going to be a phenomenal year. See how we see you because I for one can’t praise you enough.

I read Amari and the Night Brothers because of you, you also got me interested in reading Jurassic Park and One Piece (which I will read in 2023) and now I just added Given to my TBR! You don’t have to be the first to read something to be able to genuinely recommend it, we all have our own unique experiences with books. You are such a bright light in the booktube community!

I LOVED Dracula & read it in huge part because of your vlog! Your videos are so creative. Don’t sell yourself short thinking you don’t give good recommendations! I’ve been intimidated by classics for a long time so finishing and loving Dracula gave me a huge confidence boost in that department.

GAVIN STOP IT! Literally some of my favourite middle-grades of all time came from your recommendations. People come for your recommendations, but stay because of your personality and what you bring to these videos. Honestly, there aren't many youtubers I like to watch as much to cheer my up after a bad day. Your videos feel like a chatting about books with a friend and that's what makes your content so special. Don't be so hard on yourself and thank you for another year of great books.

I will be honest: I do not come to Booktube for recommendations. I generally have a good idea of books I’m going to be interested in already and I don’t need a lot of help with that. But you’re such an incredible booktuber, it really bums me out to hear you sell yourself short. Your videos are so creative and I love hearing your opinions because you really commit so hard to a video concept and see it through to the end. WHO ELSE IS DOING IT LIKE YOU? Truly. So be proud of yourself! You’re bringing such fantastic content to booktube and consistently delivering such high quality videos. Looking forward to see where you go next year. ❤

I actually picked up Finlay Donovan Is Killing It because of your video! And the thing is, the book community is so collaborative, people pick up books for all sorts of reasons, and word of mouth from their fellow creators and friends is a big part of that! It feels better to me to have that endorsement, and to know what I’m getting from like minded people, as opposed to going in blind and possibly being disappointed!

gavin !! the content you make has been one of the biggest reasons i’ve gotten back into reading at all this year !! while i’m so grateful my bank account and the space i have to keep everything right now probably think a little differently lol. i’ve picked up quite a few recommendations you’ve made and loved them!! i don’t know the last time i had so much fun with a book on a first read through than i did with clown in a cornfield lol. even though imposter syndrome can be a bitch you’ve created such a cozy space i love getting to come back to and i know there’s so many other people who agree, you’re an absolute gem

I'm going to cry because Sense and Sensibility remains my favourite Jane Austen book ( Persuasion is close behind, tho ), but it is an unpopular opinion. I just love the relationship between Marianne and Elinor, the balance between their personalities, and how it collides because their mechanisms are so different. Idk, I loved it.
    Also Col. Brandon, my beloved.

Regarding Middle Grade, if you haven't delved into The Keys To The Kingdom and The Prince Of Nowhere, then I'd HIGHLY recommend them! I don't know about other people, but I have gotten recommendations from you that I then brought to my book club to read for a past few years. Also, I look at select booktuber's best of videos because I want to hear their genuine reactions to a book. I don't need a summation of the type of prose or a break down of story beats unless that's usually how they speak and indicate their personal enjoyment. If you want to be more detailed because you want to share more about the books you love, I get that. I just don't think you need to worry about how you come off or whether you get your point across. I hadn't considered Berserk to be something I might pick up in the past and after you spoke about it here and during the manga tournament, I am going to pick it up (probably with Colleen from your patrons list who is in my book club). Several others you've mentioned I've either added to my Goodreads "Want to Read" list or already have read and loved. I think the end of the year brings feelings of wanting to do better and as someone who only started seriously writing her own books last year, I also find myself being harder on my own book reviews. I don't know about mine, but I love and appreciate yours.

I noticed you're planning a tour to Kansai in September - let me warn you it will be HOT. Kyoto traps all the heat so it'll easily still be 30 degrees with 60+% humidity in September. If next summer is as hot as this summer (over 40 degrees mid-Summer), it'll probably be 33+ degrees daily at the start of Sept. Be safe!

But you all are totally different and sometimes I like a recommendation more you gave me than the one I heard somewhere else and in reverse.

I somehow get the feeling that Romance is not your absolute favorite genre, but since you enjoy good characters a lot, I am still gonna suggest a relatively new manga series.
It's only 55 chapters so far. And sadly it is not picked up in the west yet, so you would need to look it up on mangadex for scanlations 😑And I don't know if you know Spanish, because those are up to date, while the English ones are lacking behind (only up to 43 so far).
But it is SO worth it. The series has some of the best characters I read in a while. And it's just so much feel good. Whenever I feel down, I read through a few chapters and it makes me cheer up again. Definitely my top2 manga already, behind One Piece of course. I only found it a few months ago and am obsessed with it. Read it so many times already 😅
The series is called "Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku"
If you decide to give it a try, have fun 🤗

I would check a bunch of the books(have to rewatch, didn't take notes of the names) little by little i became bot lazy and more inmerse in manga to the point i haven't read a book book this year(although i heard a couple of audiobooks, animorphs is one of the audiobooks i been hearing) after the summaries of the things you've read in this video, i recommend to you the comic/graphic novel titled Fables, from editorial vertigo, and also the netflix series sandman(and the graphic novel) fables contains murder misteries, fantasy elements and well reference to a lot of fairy tales, i liked the video and hey don't be that harsh with yourself, if i see your videos is for you and what you aport, i mean i mainly se your manga content (until now) and i already read everything (manga related) that you talk about, i like your format and the inmediate feedback, i mean you shot the videos after the read and is nice to hear the fresh insights and opinions you have after the read, hope to see more of your works next year

I'd love to someday hear your thoughts on my favourite book, the "Space Diaries" ( original title "Dzienniki gwiazdowe") by polish author Stanislaw Lem. It's a collection of satirical short stories from the perspective of space traveller Ijon Tichy.
There's a lot of thought provoking concepts in there without losing the humour.
An example: One story is about Tichy's rocket being trapped in a temporal anomaly where different rooms and other Tichys exist in different time zones (kitchen-> monday, bedroom -> thursday etc.) so Tichy needs to learn how to literally trust himself in order to fix his spaceship and escape.

What is the difference between Manga and a graphic novel? I also love Dracula 😃 I absolutely love the movie Jurassic Park, but the novel didn't quite do it for me, sad to say. You have added to my tbr quite a bit lol and you shouldn't worry about being "unique to everyone else" or have an identity crisis. Your channel is great! I love your lanterns!

Manga are just Japanese graphic novels, basically. Although manga also have a lot more of a series aspect to them. It's common to find standalone graphic novels, but it's way harder to find standalone manga. Also, manga are typically published chapter by chapter in magazines before being bound up into volumes, whereas graphic novels are usually written and published all at once rather than in pieces. Hope that makes sense!
