I'm just starting this adventure with my group. I love the idea of Auril messing with the low-level group. Good stuff thanks.

If you wanted you could create a groundhogs day sort of element. Where you sprinkle like ancient tombs with hints about where to go to find this city from some ancient civilization that left clues. Then when they jump back in time they realize it was their characters leaving hints for themselves to try and change what they did before.

Just started ID:RotF two weeks ago and liking it so far. Keeping with your suggestion, I'm limiting availability of magic items; also making the area generally suspicious of spellcasters (other than druids), and the ones who are there are: 1) there for specific reasons; 2) aligned to different factions or lands; and 3) keeping a very low profile. The party I'm DMing for is heavy on spellcasters, so they have to try to "keep it down" while being the heroes. Should be fun after a campaign where the players were blazing with both barrels.

Great vid!! Keep up the good work!
Nice motive for Auril wanting the ending location left alone. I agree...Spice up her role in the adventure a tad. Not to Strahd levels but just enough to heighten the horror.
I can’t wait to run this!
I like the idea of encountering Auril before Sunblight either directly or indirectly, showing the players her awesomeness. The quest to her island will be that much thicker with dread. I even like the idea she isn’t encountered there! Or she keeps her distance somewhat. Hopefully I can keep Auril around for the ending in the fallen city. All of the factions coming to a head including Auril I think will make for an exciting finish!
Lots can be done with that possible time traveling ending. My gears are turning!

I wound up finishing the campaign after the dragon fight due to external circumstances.
I sprinkled in loads of homebrew, and had loads more planned before stuff happened so I had to shift gears into a shorter campaign.
Basically Auril ended up being a near primal force with the Duergar being the direct threat, one major frost Druid being an exception.

@17:15 i like this thinking, i've been trying to figure out how to tie in the final chapter to the overarching story of the module and make it make sense why the PC's would want to steer towards it, i may hav eot do something like that. Right now i've only run two sessions and so far i've run the assassin opener quest plus 2 quests from chapter 1 and 2 random encounters from chapter 2, i'm weaving those two chapters together slightly while hinting at the deuregar.. probably session 4 or 5, i'll hint that the deurgar seem to be planning something big and if they don't go check it out the dragon attacks at the end of that session. Angered that the deuregar attacked for resources ten towns asks the PC's to attack Auril and end the winter. I got to that point and couldn't really figure out how to then transition over to the regheed glacier / crypt without it feeling forced. This idea makes it interesting, basically Auril was keeping the glacier frozen to keep people from being able to go there to release some big bad. I like it.

Auril is going to be the boogieman encounter in my game. She would not be actively chasing them around, but rather she would be doing her own thing and this group of mortals were unlucky enough to cross her path. Her Touch of Frost is going to be amazing to use because it can do 3d8 cold damage which can be an instant kill for early levels and very damaging into the higher levels. Her teleporting will also create some truly terrifying moments for when she can appear from out of nowhere at any moment.

I really Love the idea of introducing Auril earlier. I really enjoy this book, but I've been having a hard time understanding the narrative through line. your vid really helped with that!

I’m intending to run Icewin Dale and I really got a snow western theme. I got a whole playlist of western music ready for the fights and exploration

I have been dming for about 4 years, My new party is 4 new members who have never played, we are about to fight the dragon and it’s our 4th session, I made up a few side quests to get them comfortable with the setting and game then we started playing the story (side note: I did have to make the bosses a little bit of a higher lever, I also took out a few quests I didn’t like and that’s how I incorporated my side quests)

I thought the motivation for my players to reach Ythrien is quite simple: 24 hours after they activate the Sun Star, Auril enhances her power by assuming control of the Ythrien Mythrallar. Not only does the temperature in Icewind Dale drop even more, but it also means that winter can not be dispelled without the players finding the heart of the burried city.

You mentioned Auril showing up earlier in the adventurer.
    Can you recommend where?

I think Auril isn't even an antagonist or villain in the campaign. She's an inciting incedent, she's a literal force of nature that doesn't care about the players. She's doing her thing, y'all are just in the way.

For the facebook post suggestion, maybe the duergar want to destroy ten towns because although auril freezing everything lost her her worshippers, theres still a couple of worshipers and people worshiping her out of fear still. and there are the frost druids too. so if they kill all of her followers that can weaken and maybe even kill auril so the eldritch being can break free

  • @bradpeterson3379
    @bradpeterson3379 ปีที่แล้ว

I’m confused about your statements regarding Auril as a minor character until chapter 5. She’s literally been blocking the sun from rising, causing sacrifices and paranoia in the Ten Towns, and leading frost Druids to wreck havoc in her name. She wouldn’t bother antagonizing the party directly because they’re so far beneath her power as a god. The only reason the party is even capable of defeating her is because she’s so prideful she doesn’t contemplate the idea of retreating or negotiating with such “lesser creatures”.

You're right, but what I mean is that Auril is more like sauron form lotr. We see her presence but not her. She isn't a character we get to RP as the DM or use in combat like we do with strand until we get further in the adventure. She is, as you pointed out, still very relevant to the plot
