I can remember being 10 or 12 years old, laying in my bedroom on a summer morning, listening to this tune over and over. I tried to understand what the song was about. Now, it's that memory that makes me love this song so much. Sometimes the message behind a song---as truthful and valid as it may be---doesn't really matter as much as the memories the song carries for each individual.
Same for me. He inspired me more than any other artist to learn guitar and to get the courage to sing in front of people. I sing and play dozens of his songs and people always enjoy them.

I'm so saddened to learn that Gordon Lightfoot has recently passed away at age 84. He was my favorite artist and songwriter and my earliest, most powerful musical influence. When people ask me why I so admired his artistry, it boils down to the qualities he and his art richly possessed: 1) The arrangments of his recordings were always clean and perfect; 2) His lyrics were a window to his soul, to his love of Canada and the loves he won and lost. He is Canada's greatest songwriter and deservedly belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of contemporary songwriters. Right up there with greats like Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and and Billy Joel; 3) He always sounded great in a live setting. You could always hear his lyrics clearly, a testament to his singing chops and his sound man's skills; 4) He was a decent guy who'd wait even on cold evenings after shows, even if he was weary, to sign fans' autograph requests, take a picture with them or share a few words. All of them; I'll never forget him; 5) He turned his life around by quitting drinking, a cuationary tale for party animals everywhere 6) His formidable songbook has earned him an enviably large slice of musical immortality. His songs have been covered by many artists in the pas.t and will no doubt continue to be. well into the future ; 7) Bob Dylan once said Lightfoot was his favorite songwriter. To me, that says it all. Can't wait for some online hater troll, sitting in his shorts, staring at the screen in his man-cave, to try to refute any of that. Rest in peace, Gordon! Thanks for all those great songs!!! Say hi to Tommy Hunter and Lenny Breaux for me, once you get your room up there in musical heaven! They're currently playing in a foursome along with Wilf Carter and Pete Seeger, but I hear they're looking for a lead singer with long hair who plays six- and twelve-string Gibson guitars to round out the group. Gordon Lightfoot is the reason I wanted to play guitar and still do, especially my 12 string. My wife, Lynn Kellogg really admires Gordon and his band, having opened for many of his concerts. What a Blessing to the world of music.

The way Gordon tells a story with music it's amazing, I don't know of anyone who does it so well, as he sings it, narrates it and the images just flood your mind. freaking awesome.
