I dont care what anyone says..this is the nicest song he has written and he has written many. I know when he wrote this he was missing his wife because he told me so when I had the unique opportunity to have a one on one with him at the festival of lights in Peterborough in 2002 or thereabouts. I told him that I didn't think there was another artist alive that could make the MUSIC feel what the lyrics were saying quite like he does and he said to me"Brett, that is one of the nicest compliments I have ever got! After talking with him for a uninterrupted 1/2 hour I was 100,000 feet in the air because he is my hero of music.

Feeling the lyrics--a perfect marriage of heart, soul and mind. Indeed!! Gordon Lightfoot and his precious poetry and music have been part of my Canadian identity since I first heard him as a kid in the 60s. 🩷

Gordon is an all time legend. Arguably the best storyteller/singer/songwriter ever, along with Jim Croce for my two cents. As far as “feeling the lyrics” and conveying the emotion of a song through a voice, Bobby Darin is my all time favorite.

Most certainly one of Gordon's greatest songs, and I don't see anything wrong with a thunderstorm in Cleveland being the inspiration for a song about a snowstorm in Canada. The great poets take their inspiration from everywhere and everything and everybody. RIP Voice of Canada.

This was always a favorite of mine. It took on new meaning as life went on, eventually becoming painful. I saw him perform this live in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, only months before his death. Just Gordon and three musicians. I experienced this alone. The bad news was that my own actions had sentenced me to remain alone to this day. The good news, slim as it was, was that it was easy to find a single seat than to find two. My seat was excellent. I fortunate, even in my profound sadness. I knew within my heart that she was not lonely too.

The video for this song is just eye-candy, for a song that actually evokes a back-alley tenement, cheap apartment, maybe over a bar . . . in Montreal , Boston, or any old harbor town. The only other song that comes close is 'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen. Folk was a tough genre' to follow, once Dylan picked up that old Strat. th-cam.com/video/K7NMvpZ3PM0/w-d-xo.html

Growing up in the 60's and 70's I can think of a few song writers that were and some still are wonderful song writers. Gordon Lightfoot in my opinion is probably the greatest of them all, and if not, he's in great company with Bob McDill right there with him. As an American I really appreciate the sound and words in Gordon's songs. He has a voice you can recognize right off, and in some of the songs he wrote the words are like poetry themselves. Just listen to the first four lines of a Song for a Winters Night, it's brilliant writing. Who else writes like that?
There's only one other person I believe who can deliver a song as well as Gordon Lightfoot and that's Don Williams. Mr. Williams did a fantastic version to "If You Could Read My Mind" and I believe honored Gordon very well by not changing it.
Thank you Mr. Lightfoot for all your work. You sir are well loved throughout the world.

Loved his music for over 50 years and whaddaya know - he still delivered like that! It's one thing to perform a tune with a lot of 'ways out' to detect perfection and it's entirely different to perform so quietly, so subtle, and still nail it. THX - to Toronto's own G.L.

And speaking of lesser-known Christmas seasonal songs . . .
When I was 21 (it was a very good year) I got to see Gordon Lightfoot perform this lovely ballad at a high school auditorium in my hometown of Ottawa Canada. A sell out crowd of 600 (correct) where his previous performance at a coffee house had attracted 50 per night. His star was rising and his second album -- with SONG FOR A WINTER'S NIGHT (and Canadian Railroad Trilogy) had just been released. We called him GORD (as if we'd known him personally) and . . . oh, the magic of his live performances. We must have looked like this audience, faces almost sombre in solemn appreciation of the beauty unfolding before us.
They categorized him as "folk" music but you listen to a ballad like this one (especially loved by guitar giant Jerry Reed) and your realize that Gord transcended musical categories.
You read Lightfoot's artless words and realize that there are "Tell me" song lyrics and "Show Me" -- the latter are rarer and usually better. Case in point.
The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top
    The snow is softly fallin'
The air is still in the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly callin'
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter's night with you
The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
    My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon each page
The words of love you sent me
If I could know within my heart
    That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter's night with you
The fire is dying now, my lamp is growing dim
The shades of night are liftin'
The mornin' light steals across my windowpane
Where webs of snow are driftin'
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter's night with you
And to be once again with with you
