I think that’s what’s happening in Butterfly. They weren’t aiming for this to be a catchy song that attracts the eye of the public, but more to the meaning of it to be spread. Diversity and acceptance of all races, religions and cultures and breaking free from all societal norms while sticking close to their concept, “fly like a butterfly” :)
also if you watch their comeback shows, you realise that the repackage is more performance heavy compared to the original album. that’s why there were less vocals. ++ and xx were both designed to showcase different capabilities of loona.
What differentiates Butterfly from the saturated market of existing EDM? Because they're sang by pretty girls?
@@ashygfriend6784 what differentiates Butterfly from the generic EDM trend is the message behind it. Pretty much every EDMish song there is are all about sex, clubs, generic dance breaks for the sake of looking cool and edgy. Butterfly conveys a deep message of diversity in spite falling in the EDM/Trap genre, the choreo also has symbolisms embedded to them and you need to read between the lines very well.
For their debut they tried to have catchy hooks with Hi High but failed. So they change concept but this comeback looks like a failure too. I wonder what they will do for next comeback.

@@realsavage908 I'm curious by what metric their debut and this comeback was considered a "failure" by, because they don't have general public attention? If people mean this is a failure because they didn't get a win that's such a silly point to use since wins in kpop are literally just popularity contests anyways, and having a group like Loona from such a small company competing with big names even then is a feat in itself. The prevoting for The Show this comeback saw the highest amount of prevotes The Show has gotten in it's entire history. Previous record being 2.64 million and we passed it up to 3.68 million. Sure we didn't win vs Monsta X due to the main issue the group had which is low digitals which is fine because groups make substantially more off of physicals anyways. Not to mention selling 50k+ physicals at debut which is unheard of in general let alone again from a group from a company not in the big 3 or even a new company at all. Throw in their sold out debut concert, the Loonaverse concert which I personally attended both days and can tell you both days the concert was about 95% sold as well as Studio which was the same.. This doesn't even go into the merch being sold out at these events.
I just will never get this statement of people saying the group failed or they "flopped" just because they don't have the general public's attention. The profit that they've gained from their debut and comeback is obnoxious. Has it repaid what they spent on predebut? Obviously not yet but the group literally not even figuratively isn't a "failure" by any means with how much money they're rolling in right now. If this is the case then damn I can't wait for their next "failure"

Actually in this album you'll find that repeating melodies in most of the song. I think they do this bc they want to focus to the performance. I realized it when I watched their stages I NEVER EVEN ONCE mind the repeating melodies! Bc they preformed it beautifully, remarkably.. I hope y'all feel the same way~
anythingwilldo _ OMG I was thinking the exact same thing. When I watched the (leak) performance ver of the song I just thought everything was epic and didn't notice the repetitiveness.
Yet when I first saw the MV I got a bit annoyed that the drop keeps coming back lol. It bothers me less eventually though. Same with other tracks on the album. All songs have their own characteristic and I love each one of them but I'm not sure whether if Umu and Kevin will mind the repeating melodies. Still looking forward to their reaction and comment though 😬

yeah mostly of the xx song are made to be dance performances songs.
It's all about that amazing performance. The choreo is the kind of complex, full-body physical stuff that they usually give to bgs and rarely to ggs, and they kill it.

Chuu is a very deliberate singer. The reason that I consider her among the best vocalists in kpop is because her voice is free. What I mean by that is that she had that breakthrough in singing where you figure out how to eliminate the strain in your singing. Once you do that, you can add any vocal effect in that you want deliberately or just use none at all; it all sounds good. Even the slide in this song, did you notice the additional vocal effects she added in? It's incredible. It is unfortunate that she gets so nervous in live performances because people will doubt her until she can show such mastery live.
i felt a similar way when i first listened to butterfly but honestly as soon as i listened to the song on its own without being distracted by the video it grew on me so much more, not sure why

Weirdly, same. I love love love the MV and choreo, but I love how spacey and ethereal the song is. I agree that it can feel repetitive, but I think it's okay bc it's something I like hearing?
The chorus has the same vibe was Egoist's
"Fly like a butterfly" and the beat and "Love myself today" and the beat
I think the lack of them singing in the chorus is due to the hard choreo, they can’t half ass the choreo while singing to stabilize their voice so I guess they just didn’t really sing much
Thre is something about the song that got me, even though is a simple song, not many drastic changes, but the little touches throughout it and that chorus, I was singing that the whole day. I agree with Umu, the atmosphere and the vibe of the song grabbed me.
The single is meant to give a light to the choreography, which will be the key point to attract more Koreans to the world of loona and to the album (where the best songs are). Ahhhh I can't wait for the album first listen! 🤗❤

Honestly, even without the video, I feel like the space they create in the chorus still just rips my heart out because of the contrast. I think it does emphasize the concept like Umu said, and maybe I’m just a sucker for concept (I am) but I found it to hit really hard in my Feelings

At first glance, this song is one of those EDM tracks however since it's LOONA we're talking about, everything about them, including their sound, choreo, visuals and concepts are supposed to be taken as a whole. Butterfly would probably not have the same effect on new listeners compared to other Orbits. I love how the song's verses are sung in such a low register but every time they sing "Fly like a butterfly", it gets extremely high maybe in a key that's a bit too hard on the ears but it's definitely on purpose. LOONA wants all the LOONAs around the world to fly as high as they did, it's a great example of text painting.

Idk why but I feel like this is Loona's debut. Don't get me wrong I do love High High but Butterfly feels like the conclusion that connects everything we got from the predebut releases.
It sends a very powerful message that was needed after that they united as a complete group.

@@minumeyli No, ++ was their official debut album, I think you might be confusing that with FavOriTe. FavOriTe was a pre-debut single, ++ and Hi High were their debut. This is their second release, haha! Orbit fighting 💜🌌

Absolutely disagree, I don't find it a bad thing that the song is repetitive. The parts that repeat themselves are beautiful and I think the flow of the music doesn't need any more variety than it already has. I don't understand such criticism of songs, the whole point of a song is how is overall sound not how much variety the artist put into it. This track doesn't even sound like k-pop and I think it's thanks to the fact it's so simple. All the k-pop songs I hear always have very distinctive parts to them and it's almost a cardboard cutout that all songs follow. I'm also glad the rap is very simple and blends in with melody and isn't another "here comes the mandatory rap part". Good for them for trying to be different too, and not just another girl group with concepts following the same pattern of songs.
To add to my comment, I think if they keep doing music like this they are on a very good path to attract western audience. I am very new to k-pop, honestly always hated it and I still cannot listen to groups like EXO and all the very pop dancey sexy songs with beat drops. I have been brought to this world by (g) - idle who I think also have a very different approach to music. It's much more enjoyable for me to listen to groups like Loona, Twice, (G)-idle, Loona who have much softer almost alternative approach to pop music.
When I first saw the mv I focused in the visual, but when I saw the live stage that when I suddenly understand that Butterfly is a song that allow them to build a fine choreography, and the concept is to inspire people

I loved this music video and comeback from Loona! This is Loona matured, grown up, they seem like seasoned veterans. I am amazed how professional and mature this is. The diversity and inclusiveness is quite unique to see in a K-Pop video. While the message is strong, the real deal is the girls themselves, what a great song. It's a song that you can vibe to, and they sing it very well, great vocals. Their dancing and choreography is really unique, watch their dance moves in this, it's very very unique, and good. IMO Loona has some of the best looking women in a group. I give this an A+ 10/10. I bought the album on iTunes already. I own everything Loona on iTunes, so adding this was a no brainer. I highly support this group and can't wait to see what they do next. IMO they are one of the most unique groups in K-Pop right now. This m/v is a cinematic masterpiece, and it has a deep meaning. When you get that, you see how mature this song is, it's more than just the music. Look beyond that for a second. When the big picture comes together, you start to appreciate it more and more on every level. BTW, this was filmed in multiple locations outside Korea, check the end credits for locations. It's incredible what they have done here in terms of diversity.

I'm surprised you guys didn't comment on the bassline in the drop. I think that's the core element that makes the drop so unique and powerful. Butterfly took a page out of western EDM, especially the Future Bass genre where drops are characterized less by melody and more by rhythm, vocal chops and basslines. Reverbed out percussion are also super popular. Given the explosion of Future Bass in western music I would suspect this song to do really well in western markets

The song is very straight forward because it’s focused so heavily on the choreography which I highly recommend you watch their mnet performance of.
I actually love so much this song and for me it works perfectly as title track and yeah totally, when I watched the first time I thought the chours would be different like it would have more singing and that's what I was like "I need to listen to this again" but the sound and everything as you guys said the dance carried so well the music and the feeling to it was wonderful, hope there is a reaction to the repackaged album

To me this song is likes you open up door for your house but then you realized it's completely a different house. I refers the door as the generic aspect of the song in term of the experience of listener/audience when listening to the song and the inner design of the house is the manifestation of the overall song. The theme of this cb is the strong use of repetition and that's actually compliment the message of this cb which is equality. Every people has the right to get the same treatment regardless who you are. I also feels like the purpose of creating this dreamy and simplistic atmosphere for the whole album is to portrayed other people's dream where you need to have a dream and be like a butterfly and try to reach that dream. This is just my interpretation about this cb i don't know if it's true but what i know is world peace is not something impossible to achieve.
