    I can understand WB telling Prince he was putting out too much music to a degree. As a teenage fan, at that time, it's was rough coming up with the money to buy the new album, the 7 inch and 12 inch singles for the b-side songs and extended a-sides, the protégé albums and singles... etc. I remember in 87, I made a deal with my friend Mark that I would buy the SotT album and the Prince singles and 12 inches and he bought Madhouse 16 and Sheila's 3rd album and their singles. Then we would share them and dub them on cassettes. Hahaha. Those were the days!

    • @kiddfromla
      @kiddfromla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IMO , i think prince wanted to put all of that into one album as a collective whole . You wouldn't have to buy it separate.
      They (WB) wanted him to compete with Michael and all these other artists, while prince was more concerned about getting his message / artistic endeavors to the people.
      My best example is the crystal ball album , which was originally a 3 disc set that unfortunately got cut down to become sott, as warner bros was more focused on album sales than actual artistry. So if it wasn't for them fans would have had a 3 disc set in 1987 instead if 2 disc.
      -*Prince also stated at one point in his career that he used to record songs / albums as long drawn out pieces but had to be taught to cut them down.

      Artist's can't stop creating...and put out what they create...it's their livelihood...the Industry (Warner Brother's) is referencing their control of cash flow from this cash cow...to protect their INTEREST...not the consumer...lol

      exactly it's prince at his best that concert film is so underrated some people have no idea how amazing those performances at the sign o the times tour was

    • @josebrown5961
      @josebrown5961 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@michaelsevilla3697But it is not underrated. Prince himself failed this album. He focused on Europe and gave the US this film instead of a tour to support the album.
      So the album only sold 1 million and only got 4 singles, 4 singles off a double album?
      So no it was not underrated. People had plenty of time to “rate” this album and they chose not to. Remember it only sold 1 million.
      Prince himself just released a new album one year after it, that killed any chance of more singles.

    I saw the Sign Of The Times tour back in 1987 in Dortmund, Germany. It was amazing that I had seen him Live the first time back in 1986 in New York with the Parade Tour. To see him following year was awesome and out of the USA. It was a great show. Great year for Icons of the music industry. I heard Sign Of The Times wasn't toured in America. So I got an exclusive. Prince was awesome. He made the movie Sign O the Times. Nothing like being there Live.

      I waited a minute before making a comment. The one thing I surely heard plainly stated by Rod Stewart as I recall was something like "IF Prince was a "black" man we'd be in trouble". Wow, what a comment. It appears that he had the entire music establishment shook & on edge because of the rollercoaster of success he was experiencing at that time. This better defines the alleged competition the media said was taking place between Prince & MJ at that time. They always hype stuff into existence or more than what it is (mole hills into mountains) just to run a psy-op on the fans which are nothing but consumers to them. Actually HOW MUCH or WHAT PERCENT of the revenues does the ARTIST get to keep? They are the ones out there giving their all (blood,sweat & tears) to keep their fans satisfied. I realize that Prince made some what looks like errors in his business dealings in respect to having great talent he had signed & produced yet just kept them in limbo & sitting on a shelf & not allowing them to tour & promoting them. I am referring to Jill Jones namely. Same mistake already made with firing Jam & Lewis & allowing Andre Cymone to exit stage left. He was so busy "acquiring" new people to work with that he just put others in the vault like he did his creations which he felt were not ready just yet. The Stewart statement let me see that although Prince had played up the "ambivalent race" card & his management team pushed that to promote an air of mystique the industry & other artists KNEW how they saw him...as a "black" man who was taking over & a serious threat to their hallowed "white" rock & roll genre. In other words Prince had them SHOOK! Maybe this is why he told WB upon signing him to their label to "NOT make me "black". We all know that music has no color & that sound is a frequency. Frequencies do have differing band widths that register to the human eye as "colors" in the visible spectrum. Honestly, the ONLY color that any of them was really interested in was GREEN...as in green DOLLARS. The other stuff was merely smoke & mirrors to achieve a desire outcome. That's how the industry game is played. Prince played 4D chess while others were playing checkers.

    Excellent video. Had he toured for SOTT and came to the states and I still saw Lovesexy, I would've seen him on 4 tours in a row within 5 years. As it was I saw him 3 times over 4 years. In hindsight, I was just used to his constant output. He just didn't stop. I can't say that about any of my other favorites except Stevie in the 70s. 4 albums recorded in a year and a half. Including this movie, I DID see him 4 times in a row cuz this WAS after all a concert movie

      Unfortunately no. I've only been to Paris 3 times and it was for music business. The tours I saw were Purple Rain in 85 at Nassau Coliseum, Parade in 86 at MSG (they were selling Parade T shirts and merch so despite what people say, it still counts as the tour 😉), Lovesexy in 88 at MSG and Musicology at the Philly Spectrum in '04. Didn't really have any interest in seeing him live during the 90s stuff

      Then I became a radio DJ and saw him from WB’s point of view.
      One good thing personally for me though. My station got a Lovesexy CD that had the songs separately. If you remember Lovesexy normally had just one song, all the tracks ran together. The radio CD was rare and my station didn’t like the CD so I grabbed it for myself.

    When you think about what Marylou Badeaux who was working in Warner Bros. said that Prince wasn't so compatible with members of the company. He wasn't into convening with a lot of the staff members in the company. It wasn't his thing. So she believes a lot of people weren't into fighting for him and his wishes. Especially during the time he started wearing Slave on his cheek. She said a lot of them in the company was offended that he did that. She tried to explain to them why he was doing that. She said people couldn't absorb it as fast as you are putting it out. Looking back. She was right. When Sign O the Times came out. I was still listening to it waiting for the Bad Album to come out in 1987. So from March to August I was consumed with that Album. In between while living in Europe Terence Trent D'arby came out with his brilliant debut. But, Prince was already bored after touring with Sign O Times. By 1988 he had a complete new concept called Love Sexy. I was like WTF. But, he challenged his supporters to keep up. Believe me we tried. I'm still digesting the Emancipation Album. Some music on all his albums I still have to back too and listen. But, that is the fun part of being a Prince supporter.

    In regards to what rod Stewart said if Prince was white, we would all be in trouble. Even though he was black, they should have all been in trouble anyways after hearing SOTT and SOTT should have been the NUMBER 1 album of both 87/88 and I'm really hoping that the Super Deluxe Edition will win the Grammy for BEST historical album like it should have won over U2 Joshua tree 34 YEARS AGO. SOTT's best concert film of al time hands down,
    at par with Purple Rain if you ask me. I never reay got into the Black Album but when hey did some tunes in the Lovesexy film.... it came to life and I understood that skinny dude with the high voice a little bit more better. Love the crowd doing the wave and the Madhouse banner. Great footage.

    I found it strange that Jill Jones was not on the Sign O' The Times Tour. Just released her solo album so would have been an ideal time.

    • @saa9099
      @saa9099 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MJ, prince was sleeping with shelia on that tour and prince would of lost that if Jill was there. She would of been too tempting to him. He knew what he was doing, to get what he wanted. He could of called Jill at any time if it wasn't working out with shelia. But not the other way around. Prince always took sex on his tours, he didn't have time to go out looking for it. Really smart man early on to.

    • @blackbaron0
      @blackbaron0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess you could say he was as driven by the sex of it as much as he was by the music. I realise no one is perfect, but no wonder Jill left in the end - bitter - and didn't speak for years. Ultimately Jill got over it and they made up, which is a good thing.

    I understood then as well as now why WB was concerned about output. Especially coming off from the debacle of UTCM. With that being said, the worst thing that he didnt do was tour the states. If he had did that, it would gave SOTT much needed promotion. And possibly beating U2 at the Grammies. Anyhow, it's funny of the people who worked with him, take credit of what he did....ok LOL

    Kinda a little off topic but I think if Housequake was second single (at the time a lot of radio stations were already feat in heavy rotation) the album/ hype would’ve blown up and because of the way tour bookings are the decision to tour States had to be made right around time of second single. Housequake woulda made that tour happen - and it woulda been huge - U got the look comes next and rest is history. Downside is we would’ve never gotten Black Album and Lovesexy - so maybe things worked out for best
