      I'm the same... I'll be happy with a plain Phalaenopsis orchid as they aren't plain to me as long as I can get it to rebloom in future. I try don't base my love for plants on trends.

    I have the Equestris, purchased it by mistake, but now fully enjoyed it. The plant is vigorous, yes producing keikis, but also blooming most part of the year with yes small, but incredibly big number of flowers. For me it's a really rewarding species to care for. Love this kind of videos where you share your growing experience like blooming times. This is so valuable for me as an orchid grower!

      I have a hybrid with Equestris parentage & it has 3 basal keikis. It's a cute little bush 😇

    I love the Psychopsis!! They remind me of butterflies and are so unique. The down sides (tall flower spike, hard finding a place for it) are outweighed by all the good things about it.

    As someone who lives in the Dendrobium kingianum’s natural habitat I have absolutely no trouble with it.
    It might just be my favourite orchid so I won’t take any hate for it.

    My Kingianum I purchased about 6 months ago just started flowering this week. It has the tiniest white shimmery flowers with a teeny purple lip. I've got at least 15 flower spikes on a fairly small plant (they grew very fast) and feel like I did nothing to make it bloom!! But then... I grow it outside on my verandah ... In Brisbane, Australia.. haha so maybe that helps. The smell is absolutely delightful and I've only got two flowers open yet... I agree Jasmine/honey but quite strong .. so can't wait for the rest to open! Love this video by the way 😍😍

      I’m in Tassie and I’m growing mine inside. I agree, the little sparkly banana-shaped flowers are the cutest! Mine had no smell, but idk if that’s my climate?? I got my first flowers from my purple one last season and am expecting an even better show this year! :D

    I want to throw some Psychopsis at you for picking it! :D
    Honestly it is on top of my wishlist and i really can't imagine that this orchid could be boring for anyone, even if it is in bloom for 10 years straight. Of course you're right, that it isn't something 'special' anymore, but for me the flower just looks so amazing that i don't think i could ever get enough of it

    I think It's individually what people like and don't like. Personally i hate white Phallaenopsis. It's the most boring flower ( my opinion). White flower remind me of funerals.
    We are all so different in what er like and don't .

      It’s so funny you mention this because in other flowers like roses I loveeee! Loveeee! White, but I must agree with you. Unless my Phal. Has a pink lip then I consider them common or plain

    • @bradmiller9584
      @bradmiller9584 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I completely agree. To me white phalaenopsis are what people use to decorate hotel lobbies when they don't want to even try to be creative. Just my opinion though. I like them ok when I see a really impressively grown show-stopping one, but most white phals are pretty underwhelming.

    • @SnowDragonka
      @SnowDragonka 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're absolutely right about individuality. I mean people find green and white flowers so boring, uninteresting, not really standing out, too subtle... I heard all of that. And yet when I go purchasing flowering plant, I absolutely adore these subtle flowers. The washed out colours (like light purple pattern on a whitish flower)? Oh get me some. I don't like all those very striking colours especially next to each other. As people say, every good has its buyer :)

      Wow, I finally found someone I can totally relate to. So many people have white phalaenopsis... I mean, if the flower has a pink or a violet hint/petal, it's different. Plain white, though, it's not for me!

  • @agnediciuniene9861
    @agnediciuniene9861 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh no! The longer an orchid flowers, the more I love it . 1,5 year ago I got a hybrid phal as a present. At first it looked very unimpressive to me. But now, after it has been flowering non stop for 1,5 years with cascades of big flowers, I began to appreciate it. It felt my appreciation because I repoted it and started watering with Ro water and suitable fertiliser, so now it is growing a new leaf and I feel now it will stop flowering. And I love my psychopsis. I have it only for several months, but it grew a flowerspike and now there is a bud on it. I can't wait to see the flower. And if it will bloom non stop like hybrid phals, I will really really liove it.

  • @summerrobinson8411
    @summerrobinson8411 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    QUESTION: I don't know if anyone will see this and answer (I'm always on the late showing) but some Psychopsis have plain bulbo like leaves and some have mottled leaves with essentially the same bloom??? Just wanted to know because I WILL grow anything with mottled leaves...stale bloom or not😉

    I recently repurchased the Brassavola 'Little Stars' after my landlady's cats ate up my 5-year old one last year. The new one isn't a year old yet, but its two blooms release a fragrance that takes over my room each night. I get slightly light-headed if I smell it up close. Visually, I agree it's nothing to go nuts over, but the fragrance is impressive. It's also super easy to care for and takes lots of abuse...I would actually say it's almost underrated.

  • @rianmilit

    I actually purchased the chysis due to watching you hype in several videos over it haha.

    For me, I'm just bored to death of white phalaenopsis. The many kinds of brown encyclias aren't doing much to awe-inspire me these days either. I'll hopefully see amazing specimens of these that will change my mind for a hot minute, but ordinarily my eyes and brain just skip right over them.

  • @southpark5555

    Nice video. It is true that what people are attracted to --- whether it is orchids, flowers, art, food, smells, etc -- is in the eye or nose or mouth of the beholder. I always believe it is important to not go with other people's 'ratings' of orchids. Just go with what one wishes to grow. Even if an orchid flower doesn't have features that others might have, I believe that appreciation of any orchid flower is a nice thing. Definitely don't go with people's ratings. The one at 3:44 is amazing. It certainly does look like transformers or gundam.
    At 4:09, I wouldn't mind if the flower is there every day. That would be absolutely fantastic for me. I'm thinking to just appreciate it for what it is ..... is very nice already - not just their flower, but the whole plant.

  • @mffmoniz2948
    @mffmoniz2948 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Amazing as it may sound, some orchids bloom for so long or so often, that you can get bored of the flowers.
    White phal. Have it. Now it's invisible at flower shops. I just look for smth different, the more different the better.
    I am starting to have a love/hate relationship with coelogynes. For me they remind me of my mom. But outside of blooming season they are just ugly green leaves if they don't die on you.

  • @orchidsandalcohol1792
    @orchidsandalcohol1792 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Totally agree about the Psychopsis! It’s one that always catches people’s eye when they come over, but since mine has basically been in bloom for 5 years, I really don’t appreciate it any more. The shorter the bloom life, the greater the appeal sometimes. Like for my Stanhopeas, they last 2-3 days but they are unbelievable!
    Now amethystoglossum and kingianum are a different story! My Den kingianums (all 3 of them, different varieties) just hang out outside year round. I don’t fuss with them much at all, they get rained on and fertilized a lot in the summer, a good cool down with less rain in the winter, and if I ignored them enough throughout the year, I get these massive purple displays every March. I also like that it blooms off of old canes. More bang for your buck.
    The Den. amethystoglossum is a big lady, it’s true, (her canes are super tall and quite a bit thicker than my thumb) but when staked or trained with a ring they have a pretty neat upright growth habit and I can tuck her in between some of my other orchids. Individual flowers don’t last long, but since not all of the clusters open at once, mine is usually in bloom for about 4-6 weeks. Such an incredible display for that month and a half. Plus, that’s another one that blooms off of old canes so my flower count doubles or triples every year. Maybe yours just needs some time to grow up a little?

    Disagree with you on the Chysis. I love mine. It is my first orchid to bloom in the spring. Beautiful white, large flowers. Disappointing that that don't last longer, yes! Definitely agree with you on the Den Kingianum. I've been trying to get one to bloom for over a year. Almost ready to give up on it. Thanks for an interesting video.

    My favorite fragrance in my small and recently started collection is the Phal amboinensis var simanis. That little Phal and small flower can be felt in other areas of the apartment :) she has a strange but oh! so good smell at least to me. It seems though that nobody talks a lot about it

    Absolutely not getting bored of Psycopsis (I've got Kalihi)!
    I keep the diary, just to remember what number it is, now I've got the 6th flower, and after next new is opened (the process itself is amazing - you could do a video, HOW it is opening the flower) - I will drink with my husband for the wellbeing of my Psycopsis.
    And now I am waiting for the very first bloom on my Psycopsis Three Lips.
    So, I don't agree with you!!

    Isn't that Brassavola grandiflora? From the Caribbean side of Mexico as it has broad / flat leaves. B. nodosa has more terete leaves and is from the Pacific side of Mexico. B. cucullata takes a lot more space, isn't it slower growing?

  • @birdluvrs
    @birdluvrs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree about the nodosa...I won't be buying any more oncidium twinkles' in future...Take months to set blooms, blooms for maybe a month, then makes a mess every day while the tiny flowers drop off one by one...sure it smells nice like vanilla but so do many of my other oncidium types that have much bigger and nicer flowers.

    I’m so sad, I recently purchased a cattleya with giant white flowers. I recently lost her flowers since when I bought her I didn’t look at the flower spike stem because it has a bacteria infection on it and within three days it rotted through the entire flower spike stem.

    HI Danny, I have a Kingianum young plant (already bloomed, so it blooms early) but it grows soon slow! I like the foliage and the compactness of it. You say it is hard to re-bloom? any tips on how to do that? Thanks

    Danny, have you ever cared for an epidendrum porpax? I've had mine for nearly a year but it had a major setback last month while I was on vacation. It's time for the ICU but am uncertain of what this particular orchid needs. I'm hoping it doesn't involve a mount since other mounts seem to dry out too fast in my house (don't have a greenhouse). Thanks!

  • @lkh511981
    @lkh511981 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was also really disappointed in how quickly my amethystoglossum's blooms dropped, but it has some positives too. I got three spikes on a very young plant without any special treatment, so I image it's going to be a great show for at least a few days when it's bigger. The foliage also turns a pretty purple with high enough light.

  • @paxxiv
    @paxxiv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with most of your picks. Some I don’t personally own but I have seen at the nursery. One orchid I’d like to add to your list, and you may disagree with me is the Neofinetia Falcata and mostly because I don’t like the fragrance it emits and I find it to be a finicky orchid so the reward, as you mentioned, for me will the fragrance and it’s not much or unpleasant.

  • @j.d.8075
    @j.d.8075 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do have the Brassavola nodosa mostly because I do like the blooms and to encourage moths to my orchid house. I am actually now considering the Chysis bractescens, as it appears to be related to the Catasetums and thus a challenge and interesting species [and genera] to grow. And I do have Dendrobium kingianum but it is a native to where I am.

    Well I agree on Psychopsis. I have it and it more or less in bloom all the time. Also agree on B.nodosa. B. cuculata is so much more interesting. I really disagree on D. kingianum. I grow it for 2 years now outside in lava rocks. It is in bloom very spring with almost no efford. Smells great and the inflorences have any flowers. Try to grow it outside to have a real winter rest in cold and you will change your mind :)

    Lol I have a love and hate relationship with the kingianum. I spend some much time taking care of it so it has new growths and a lot of flower shots and then all buds blasted for the past 2 years... I did not move it after moving it indoor and the temperature is constant indoor too... have no idea how to prevent buds blasts....

    • @summerrobinson8411
      @summerrobinson8411 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Along with your temperature being consistent you want to try keeping the humidity up as well, if that's not a problem...my first year of owning orchids I had a Phal. that kept trying to bloom but they kept blasting, I was using COLD water instead of room temp. water, beginners mistake. Hope this is helpful🌾☺

    If you are looking for an orchid with a fragrance that can knock you for six, then look for Dendrobium speciosum, it is a big plant, with big spikes, with a big fragrance and depending on the variety it can smell like cinnamon.

    What you said about Dendrobium amethystoglossum, is is true for a bunch of Dendrobium with a similar morphology. • @orquinonos6552
      @orquinonos6552 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't like it because it wasn't what I was expecting. Everybody says it has the best smell and the flowers are so pretty, but I had to really stick my nose in the flowers to barely detect anything and the flowers are just your typical Oncidium, but red. I'm sure the smell has a lot to do with the environment, but I've encountered this hybrid in different conditions and it's almost always the same. When it comes to fragrance I'd rather have Stanhopeas or Encyclias.

      It actually has a very strong fragrance but mostly in the morning. I put mine in the kitchen when it’s blooming and you can smell it all the way through the dinning room but by dinner time you can barely smell anything from it. Definitely not overrated in my opinion.

    PHALAENOPSIS LEODORO! I was never more disappointed in my life than when I first smelled it at an orchid fair. After everyone on forums, TH-cam, and my own orchid society raved about it, I expected to be hit with a wall of citronella fragrance the moment I walked into the fair, yet when I tried to smell it, I barely got a wife of lemon. The price as well, €30, repulsed me so much I now refuse to buy it.

    One type of orchid I found to be a huuuuuuuuuuge let down were the twinkles. Yes, the popular and famous twinkles. I was absolutely mad to have one for the delicious fragrance and delicate flowers and more compact size. I came across some in person and no. Just no. The flowers were ok, nothing that special and the fragrance was disappointing. Severely disappointing. I gave those a hard pass then went to the bathroom to cry at having my expectations shattered (sarcasm). Other than being compact and more space saving than the sharry baby and her hybrids, it was nothing special at all. After my good long cry in the bathroom I went ahead an purchased two new cattleyas, my first sophronitus, a tiny little dendrobium and a giant zygo. I felt much better.

    The only one I do like among those is the Phal equestris, but only the coerulea one. To me the mix of white and lavender is very charming, it can bloom very often if its well cared and it helps making coerulea hybrids in phalaenopsis :)
    I also need to get me a B cucullata haha, I feel the flower is unique in a genus where most species are very similar to one another.
    If you love that Catasetum, as I pointed out in the other video, know that lip is the trademark of Ctsm fuchsii so if you liked it, be alert for fuchsii hybrids or fuchsii itself. The species looks to me like videogame minions or something haha

    i think familiarity breeds contempt ! in the case of the psychopsis haha! also it could be the case for some phalaenopsis which can bloom for months and are available almost everywhere from grocery stores , to flower stores so according to human behaviour and the law of supply & demand other orchids are much more rare and their appeal is that much more "exotic" !! xoxoL.

      About the Chysis bractescens, well I have a sad story, you won’t believe it. Well, I’m from Mexico, here we have tons of native orchid species (including Chysis bractescens) , but unfortunately not many people who really care for them. Here it’s quite common to see orchid sellers on the streets with wild specimens from a huge variety of species from Schomburgkia superbiens to Myrmecophyla tibicinis. Sadly I’ve seen that Chysis around... but they are pretty rootless and stressed that chances of saving them are extremely low. And sometimes they are infected with all sorts of diseases (sometimes they have fusarium).

    Hi Danny. I think is the challenge of getting each orchid to stay alive (!!!) and watching it flourish, especially when you watch it rooting -quite fulfilling. If you ever get bored of the Nodosa send it my way, though I’m sure shipping will be too expensive🙃 and there’s the problem of days on shipment and governmental restrictions 🧐. Kingianum and Berry Oda -is like having two generations in your collection. Hey, don’t Bhandi create more a mess than any of your plants ? Seeds all over the place and frequent cage cleaning not to mention cost of food and toys. I know is offsetted by the frequent manicure you get, but ... Thanks for fun piece

    Liparis viridiflora... meh. And the flowers make a mess when done.

    I just don't see the point of this video. It's a personal thing ( like you said) and although I agree with you regarding some of the orchids you singled out, I don't get your arguments: for example, the psychopsis Orchid: what's wrong with having a flower for 2-3 months? Isn't that what we want? The times I've heard you and others lament having to wait all year for an orchid to flower and then the flowers last just a few days!!! I know which I'd rather have. And if you don't like the tall spike, try mounting the orchid from on high so that it hangs down. I found this video negative: all orchids have their place and their supporters (personally I don't like paphiopedilums or bulbophyllums! My choice). I'd much rather you put a positive and creative slant on your video, and tried to find ways to make the unattractive more attractive.

      Pretty sure no plant feelings were hurt in the making of this video...

      Oh the last thing I want is for you guys to fight :( not everyone will enjoy all the videos and that is ok, it's very normal. I am happy that most of you got the point of the video and started some cool conversations too! Some actually loved some of these orchids though they never heard of them, that's awesome and now they know the so called negatives as well. It's all good l, love you all and glad you enjoyed the conversations :D

      Sorry to hear, but I am honest and I believe the truth and honesty, even if they bother us sometimes, have their purpose. This hobby is not all pleasant all the time and I refuse to lie, or hide the bad stuff on my channel. Some orchids will dissapoint us, although many people love them and that is the truth and it's ok. It's also ok and healthy to talk about it with other enthusiasts. I think most people took the useful from the video, the honest opinions, but if you hated the subject that's cool, it's normal and we're good ;) love you all!

      Pole Cude. What a rude, ignorant person you are. How can I comment unless I watch, eh? Answer me that. Rant? RANT? Where did I rant? Dani also said that not everyone thought the same: well, I do not. So there.
