    This is such an important step overlooked by many sewers. I learned how to do this when I took sewing in high school. I was also taught that if the edges don't match up after they are ripped along the grain, you should pull the fabric on opposite ends and in the middle until they are. Thank you for this tutorial.

      Indeed, this is one of the most overlooked steps. You are absolutely right about pulling the fabric in opposite directions if ends don't match. Thanks for sharing this with us, Rebecca

      It's an old ruler, I got it from a local shop. There are plenty of similar rulers online. I think I linked up some of these on my website hellosewing.com

    Is there any thing to keep in mind to avoid the fabric moving when cutting? I thought cutting fabric was no brainer until I got into sewing.

      You can use fabric weights, press it with your hand while cutting with the other, pressing the ruler if you are using roller blade

    I've tried the rip - the - fabric method at least ten times before and it never worked for me. Will try the string - pulling method shown here, though.
