Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim is probably my favorite RTS of all time. It changed my life entirely, playing it when I was child made me love Fantasy, RTS and AI. I would suggest it to everybody, but avoid Majesty 2.

As devs, bringing something new to the table is a must. In fact, we're trying to do so with the brick-by-brick building system in Cataclismo. Being innovative is hard, though. So many great games and ideas around!
Rise & fall was an unexpectedly well polished game. I highly suggest you give it a shot if you like RTS from that era like AoE2 and stuff. Lots of abilities, units, heroes and the cool 3rd person hero control
I recommend Divinity: Dragon Commander for a checking-out. A bit unbalanced, but overall fun. The cutscenes and interactions between missions are particularly hilarious. If there's a battle your army has a low chance to win, just join in, turn into a dragon (for a flying FPS rampage) and win it yourself.
You should probably look for Dominions 5. Its an interesting turn based strategy game where you create a deity and battle for supremacy against other deities (AI or Players).

I recommend checking out Perimeter. This is truly one of the most unique takes on the RTS genre, both gameplay- and story-wise.
