The Super Shiny Mega Gengar I mean he’s an interesting addition and I find him one of the funnest characters to play. People probably didn’t hate on him just because he’s a Mario rep. But what they don’t understand is that fire emblem is a wildly popular franchise here in the west and actually needs reps more than other franchises.
is it insane that at least eight of the mario reps have been in at least 5 games all together? mario, luigi, peach, bowser, yoshi, DK, rosalina, daisy. all of these characters have been in countless games, and more games than one. sure awakening has 3 reps, but mario has a bunch more, who had multiple games that are all shit in comparison to FE awakening
I feel so bad for sakurai. He never gets enough respect for making a game with love and care. I find it upsetting when people get mad that ultimate isn’t the most competitive game yet.
What does being competitive even matter? I don't know about you, but I'd much rather play the game for the adventure and story, which is why I'm not a big fan of Sm4sh.
I feel really bad for him as well because he gets all the blame for characters like byleth. Characters who Nintendo made him put in for promotion. He has no control over dlc characters for the game. Anyone who says he gets a list of characters that he picks from is wrong. He said multiple times that Nintendo pick the characters and in the Steve presentation said how the process works. If sakurai could pick the characters then I could easily see some of the fighters pass characters being replaced with others

they talked much about echos, but aside from actually "name them" they didn't do much with it. sure, i get more than most the work that goes behind making every single animation and effect, but would we REALLY be offended that much by a shovelknight-skin for metanight, an X-ray (custom robo) for megaman or even, if we want to do a reverse-orgin, a kamen rider 1 for falcon?
GSS was the first I heard, Opera and Classical Opera is literally my singing genre, and Nemesis was a beast. Overall, Blue Lions favourite route that I resonate wholly with. Golden Deer however was a fantastic first route for me and I associate all of the game's lore with GSS, so it feels like I've lost a part of the game, if you understand what I mean.
Especially when he literally had no control over the DLC choices, Nintendo chose them all. He just gave the characters movesets. If anything, people should be thanking him for taking this pick, giving them a unique moveset, and making it work.
What pisses me off more is that some of these people are probably the same ones clamoring for Waluigi or Geno even though there are already like 10+ Mario reps. These people don’t deserve anything good in life.

ImFxrr I’d think the opposite would almost be more suiting. I.e., aerials for Bow, Sword jab, Lance Tilts, Smash Attacks for the Axes. Special moves then change based on which weapon is out, allowing for 16 specials (which isn’t that different from Hero).

And by that same logic of weight, why do people still want Waluigi or another Pokémon? They have equal than or greater weight than the FE characters. I know they’re gonna add a Pokémon from Gen 8 somewhere in the fighters pass. I don’t necessarily think they should wait until the next game to add them. I don’t particularly want them but still. Last thing, I have seen a lot of FE in smash debates but I have yet to meet someone that isn’t satisfied with the number of reps they have. It’s more of what matters more being the gameplay that matters more to fans of the series as most of them use swords and most people would like a rep to another class and Or aspect of FE like a Pegasus rider. I see some merit in that argument but it’s clear favoritism for absolutely no reason aside from “I know them.” If we are going for pure numbers and data, A great point against them also works for them as most of them are echos and take significantly less time over someone like Rosilina and Luma, but even so I think if people really don’t like the amount of FE characters, then the amount of Mario characters should be reduced as well. Mario I don’t think has had a character removed at any point in smash. And if you include the spin off characters has some of the most. And I can’t fully disagree? I haven’t been an FE fan for the longest time since I started on awakening but Hector uses an Axe and Lyn uses a sword and bow, but Lyn uses a long sword so could in theory could be a very unique character while also acting as a “face” character as they are one of the most popular FE characters in ANY game. It’s not that they want more, it’s that they’d rather have better representation which I feel like is reasonable.
Somethingsuperbland It is proven that some resources from Smash4 were taken into ultimate, absolutely not all but some. Robin’s final smash is probably one of them. And although you are right, even Echoes take work, arguing that they get an amiibo and everything is just kind of semantics because that is the standard of every fighter echo or not. Every character even alternate costumes get different voice lines and spirits, and in the case of Smash4 dlc they even got the P2 Amiibo(R.I.P.). All the Echoes are really just an “Eh, why not?” Kind of choice. And I do agree that they are obviously representation. I think Chrom is more of a sad offender if anything. People wanted him and all yeah, but it IS admittedly stupid that Awakening Alone(despite being one of the most popular its crazy) has THREE. If I were to make equivalents to those with FE using my knowledge. Mario is Marth obviously because they are both the face respectively. Roy is Luigi for similar enough reasons that I don’t know a lot of details of. Ike I don’t feel like has a direct equivalent but he’s a heavy sword fighter that brings a far different game from the others so Bowser? Lucina is another one without a direct equivalent but I’d say Chrom and her would be equivalent to plant on a much lesser degree, since they show how iconic Awakening was and it literately SAVED the franchise. Robin is Rosalina, only appeared once or twice in a main line game but both games left such an impact from their games that they are more than likely to be recognized by people who have never played their specific games. Corrin and Byleth are tricky and I don’t think they have an equivalent at all. But Fates basically tried and failed to recreate the spark from Awakening and failed for the most part but failed in many people’s eyes so take that for what you will. My point is, you can make similar arguments for literarily any franchise. Honestly I think it’s pretty crazy that any franchise has 8 characters or more, but “Everyone is here” therefore every rep from every franchise “is here” so it makes sense for so many of them for both Mario and FE. It is also in an inevitable spot for its characters to not be as iconic as series like Mario or sonic as the games has changed SO much over the years and almost every game has a new cast of characters. And I completely agree with your last point.

Well that's just japan. Pretty much almost everybody in the west didn't know who this chacter was. Its ok to get representation from games from other countries but having said game take up more than a 10th of the roster when the first fe game wasn't even aviable to the west is ridiculous

@@bdeink I don't think they sound bad at all. They used the orchestra version of Adventure in the reveal trailer but it was alongside CGI so it went well with the more cinematic footage. In actual gameplay I think the MIDIs are just fine.
Pause on Fire Emblem. Some people really be forgetting that Dante has the same creator as Bayonetta. And that Bayonetta was at one point considered a Spiritual Successor to Devil May Cry in gameplay. Now the point I'm getting at is: Dante would have been Sword-Bayonetta. Bayonetta's Echo, they share many many similarities in gameplay.
@@firstcooommment3675 "sword bayonetta" yeah no, dante's moveset would be different because for starters, he wouldn't get a counter, and second dante would have a gimmick, that being if you don't vary up the moves, you get less damage, but if you vary them up he gets a boost in damage for those attacks. As well as sword changes the moveset SO MUCH (jab, aerials, smashes, tilts, and pummel, hell maybe even the specials are changed because of sword, which they already are going to be different.) So you can't really compare them.
@@anidiot192 Just comparing the animations of each character in the roster, they seem the closest. Due to Dante being a speedy, damage dealer that doesn't rely on a few moves but "the entire kitchen sink". And eventually no one besides Bayonetta has stylistic animations that matches Dante's flashy and fast style like in his games. For instance: both of them would use rapid attacks based on combos from their original games. They both use guns, slow exaggerated heavy attacks(launchers, air spikes,etc), magic, and transformations. For regular attacks, whereas Bayonetta uses Melee punches, and adds in magic. Dante would instead use his sword mixed in with Melee attacks. It wouldn't be exact, and many things will be different. But the weight of the attacks/the animations would be pretty similar. Just imagine his Marvel vs Capcom version, everything he does in there could be converted into a fast character like Bayonetta(if anyone).
Jog Swanson No counter: Dante has Royal Guard and Quicksilver so getting a counter rolled in would be very easy. Not probable for another Witch Time, but it’s not insane. Losing damage from no variety: that’s called stale moves in Smash. So the gimmick might be more his styles and weapon pool, though they shafted Bayo’s weapon pool so they’d have to do the same for time constraints. Smash Ultimate also tries to stay pretty true to the character’s origins. Terry, Joker, and even Banjo are prime examples of that. Mechanics being in line with their main games. And when you get into the nuts of DMC, Dante and Bayonetta play very similar. Stinger is Bayo’s grounded heel-slide, easy ground combo game to launcher into the air, then the same air combo game as Bayo, but more vertical than horizontal. And I can see him being WORSE because his down-B could be Royal Guard that turns into Devil Trigger like Joker’s Arcen. So you’d have a sword character with access to Bayo’s combo game, Marth or Cloud’s disjoints, maybe different styles or weapons like Shulk’s Monado, and Joker’s Arcen meter. Even if Devil Trigger is his final smash, that’s still at least 2 different things Smash players hate. And if his playstyle doesn’t match the game, Sakurai would get a fucking storm of hate from the community he’s trying to include. So that combo game is almost necessary if they want Dante in.
I think Byleth's moveset is a pretty great representation of Three Houses, actually, because you can equip all those weapons at once and switch between them whenever you want regardless of your class.
I would have preferred all three house leaders, interchangeable like Pokemon Trainer's Squirtle/Ivy/Charizard or old-school Zelda/Sheik. It would have been way better of a rep of 3H than yet another self-insert protag devoid of much personality beyond stern looking and serious.

Byleth not only has LESS voicework and dialogue compared to Corrin and Robin in 3H, but so much less expression and boring supports that it is especially moreso a problem for them than Robin and Corrin.

Someone else was pointing out that Fire Emblem games usually have around 30-40 playable characters and there's a different roster for all sixteen games. They could have easily found characters within the series that had way different playstyles if they didn't mostly just use the protagonists from the more popular ones. In a way, if you were to judge by percentage of characters, Fire Emblem is actually under represented.
Agree. That's why I love the games. Its focused so much on trying to make these likeable characters. Three Houses did the best job. I fell in love with my students in Blue Lions. The problem isn't Byleth, it's the ones who came before Byleth. I agree with this so much. Byleth themself is really cool and I can't wait to play them. It was just the amount of Fire Emblems characters the made it mediocre.
Sakurai isn't a god, if he is a god, he would've prevented six other FEcharacters from appearing in smash. Sakurai is perfect however, as he made byleth that rendered the other six obsolete to play as.

I don't care about the number, but they all feel the same: blue haired characters with swords, blue clothes and no personnalities. Hopefully, Corrin and Robbin are little different, but they still do not have personnalities, and they have swords! I am pretty sure if we had Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude with unique gameplay all at once instead of Byleth, there will be not such downvoting. Mostly because Byleth is a blue haired swordman with blue clothes and no personnality, and the 3 above aren't (even Dimitri). Plus: Byleth popularity is rather average in FE:3H, contrary to the 3 houses leaders. I dream for a new roster like this: • Edelgard: Axe & Shield. Sturdy and deadly, but slow. Could even have Hector as echo fighter. • Dimitri: Lance & Sword: quick and versatile, but lightweight. Could even have Lyn as echo fighter. • Claude: Bow & Wyvern: high mobility and good projectile, but limited option in close range. • Swordsmen: Make your choice between all those. Even if I like Roy a lot, Lucina and Ike are the best guesses if we are limited to 2. • Robin and Corrin: because they have unique gameplay. Well, we end up with 9 FE characters in the end (Edelgard, (Hector), Dimitri, (Lyn), Claude, Lucina, Ike, Robin and Corrin) instead of 8 (Marth, (Lucina), 'Roy', (Chrom), Ike, Robin, Corrin and Byleth).

For Pokémon Trainer I’ve always wanted them to use the left and right taunts to switch to either the previous Pokémon or the next one respectively and be able to use that mechanic in the air so charizard can get rock smash back and squirtle and ivysaur could have their own down b moves

Twilitblack I dont care, I just dont want anymore fire emblem characters. Give me something different, like a new sonic character or something like a new xenoblade character. Fire emblem has too many representatives.
I would argue that every FE character we have either does serve a purpose or has no reason NOT to be there. Marth is of course the face of the entire series. His fighting style of keeping his opponents at the right distance and hitting them with the tip of his sword is a genius way to transition the gameplay of a tactical RPG into a fighting game. It represents the strategy of patiently picking off your enemies one by one while minimizing risks by staying out of range of enemy attacks. On the contrary, Roy when introduced in Melee represented an alternative, more aggressive playstyle. It still represented tactical positioning, but his attacks were stronger at the base of the sword rather than the tip. He seems to represent the idea of simply brute forcing strong opponents in FE by attacking them head-on with your own strong units. That may be a bit of a stretch, but let's not forget that he was a clone in Melee. He doesn't really need any justification for being there. He was brought back in SB4 simply by popular demand. So, even though I would say the aspects he represented before don't really hold up now, it can't be argued that it was Smash fans who wanted him back in the first place. And they did take the extra effort to ensure Roy wasn't just a clone again. Ike was able to take the ideas conveyed by Roy and apply them in a much more obvious way, using a heavy sword to crush his enemies. At the time of his inclusion, no other swordfighter fought like this and even now the only one who comes close is Ganondorf with his forward smash. Robin was a perfect opportunity to represent weapon types outside of just swords. Using Robin, they were finally able to include a protagonist that specialized in magic. Granted, in my opinion they did a pretty poor job of this by also choosing to have him represent inventory management and weapon degredation of all things, but it was still a respectable decision to include. Lucina, as an echo, doesn't need any justification. It's worth noting though that she was originally planned to just be an alt for Marth before it was decided to change her sword to remove the sweetspot mechanic of Marth so that she could serve as an easier to master version of Marth. She also represents one of the unique aspects of Awakening: The time-traveling children from a doomed future. Corrin was a perfect opportunity to represent another new weapon type: Dragonstones. Granted, I do think a more timeless choice to represent this probably would have been Tiki as she is a recurring character and a very popular one at that, but with Fates right around the corner at the time, I really don't think Corrin was as out of place as everyone makes him out to be. He had a ton of unique moveset potential unlike anything any other FE protagonist could exhibit. You can't blame Sakurai for wanting to include him. Once again, Chrom being an echo means he needs little justification. However, he was a very highly requested character during development of SB4 (even if only because of the gematsu leak). From what I understand, Sakurai had considered including him in SB4 as an Ike echo as well. Between that and fan demand, Chrom's inclusion kinda just feels like "eh, why not?" And why not indeed, as even among echo fighters Chrom is the most unique pulling from two different movesets rather than exclusively Roy's. Up until this point, there has always been something major missing from Fire Emblem representation in smash: The weapon triangle. A major mechanic in FE games is the rock-paper-scissors relationship between swords, lances, and axes. I always felt like it was a missed opportunity that Chrom and Lucina weren't given a lance in reference to their Great Lord class being able to use lances, but they were instead included as echoes, and including them as original characters and having their movesets built around a lance rather than their signature swords would feel unnatural. But that brings us to Byleth who, while from an FE game that quite surprisingly did away with the weapon triangle, is also from a game in which any character of any class can use any weapon type. Many people have argued we should have gotten one of the house leaders, the most popular suggestion seems to be Edelgard. Unfortunately, I just don't think it's really fair to include one house leader over the others. They all hold equal importance to the story of Three Houses. This is the same reason I don't think Sakurai would have chosen any of the champions from Breath of the Wild, either. The only time Sakurai has ever chosen among a trio of characters were starter pokemon. I don't think the intention there was to represent the starters specifically but just to choose a pokemon from the latest generation, the most suited designs chosen by Sakurai just happen to usually be starters. Regardless, I think Byleth was the best solution to this whole dilemma. The Sword of the Creator is a very unique weapon type. Yes, it is a sword, but I'm shocked by how many people overlook the fact that the "sword" is more like a whip than anything else. That alone I think is pretty freaking awesome. Beyond that, the inclusion of the Hero's Relics of each of the house leaders allows for representation of not only the entire weapon triangle in one character, but also allows each of the house leaders to be represented spiritually through Byleth, the face of the game as a whole. Byleth, being a professor, trains in a variety of weapon types to teach his students properly. For this reason, he is a perfect fit to represent the variety of weapon types Fire Emblem has to offer. I really think people are far more angry about "too many FE reps!" than they should be. Excluding echoes, the franchise has 6 reps. That's still less than Mario and Pokemon and equal to Legend of Zelda. At the end of the day, Smash isn't about the number of reps each game deserves, it's about representing each game as well as they possibly can. As long as a franchise is contributing new ideas, Smash is going to continue adding new characters.
I think most people assumed Byleth switched weapons like Monado arts. Then when we found out it was just different moves, so people were disappointed all over again.
U know how much cooler that woulda been? Press b to switch between bow, axe, sword or lance. tilts/aerial/specials would be different 4 each one? Ok. That might be a ton of work, but still...

So, I always liked byleth and all. But I would've loved the character in smash if they played into more of them being a teacher leading their students. Like, I would've loved to see Byleth's smash attacks have her call on Edelgard, Claude, and Dimitri to attack with their respective weapons. But that's just me :)
I love Fire Emblem. It’s my favorite franchise in video games and I’ll never get tired of playing it. That being said, I completely agree with you that the cast in smash should be cut in half. I’d say keep Marth, Ike, Robin, Corrin, and Byleth. With the amount of character there are, I don’t think they deserve an echo spot. Those five are unique enough to be the fire emblem reps of smash imo
I mean "Echo Spot" doesn't really make sense as an argument. The point of an echo is to differentiate their playstyle and add a bit of fanservice using minimal resources. They don't really take up a "slot", they just get added if the creators feel they can or should, and I much prefer Chrom and Lucina who play very differently to Roy and Marth than Samus and Dark Samus or Peach and Daisy, who play identically to each other.

The typical Smash fan is upset an FE character got added. Standard/older FE fans wish someone else was added (i.e. Lyn). Fans of 3H are sad that God Shattering Star isn't here. Hopefully we'll get a Felix Swordfighter skin or something that it will come with, like Megalovania or Floral Fury with Sans and Cuphead.

Yes and no, the General 'Everyone is Here' slogan can stil stay intact.. if the Idea of the Echo fighters was they're seprate 'COSTUMES' on the fighter they're Echoing. THe ones with significant differences liek Ken and Ryu work, but Lucina and Marth Don't for the fact theirs VERY little (At glance and Moveset) Different between the two meaning it's literally two Seprate charaters billed to just be 'Clones' with a fancy title. I don't have a problem with Byleth not cause I didn't play FIre Emblem three houses, not cause it's another Sword'esce Fighter in smash, but my issue is that theirs diffently a DOzen other series with more WOrld Renown that Nintendo owns that they could've put into the game and it could've worked instead of dipping into the same series again.

Remember how hype everyone was when they first announced every smash character was coming back for this game? I feel like that energy is gone with the game being out for so long, but I still think this game wouldn't be "ultimate" without that concept of every character being in it. You can split hairs about what characters you would have if it were up to you, but I'd still rather have every character in the game than a selective cast. IDK why people want LESS options. I don't even play FE, but some of the fighters are fun to play, so I'm glad they are all here.
It's really stupid that Three Houses went from the highest rated Switch game of 2019 to the most hated because of Byleth's inclusion in Smash. Like, if you don't like the game, that's fine, but if you're retroactively changing your opinion on a game because of something that happened in a completely different game, then you seriously need to rethink your standards.

When Byleth was added i only thought of the scene in Endgame where Thanos said "I am inevitable." I wasn't upset at Byleth's inclusion, but I wasn't very impressed either. I felt like if they were gonna do another FE rep, it should have been someone with more of an ability to expand what the smash community has to see in FE, not another anime sword fighter. I am happy at Byleth's inclusion, but I realized the backlash that would occur in the community as a Smash fan and a Fire Emblem fan would be rather immense. I will say that I am looking forward to how Byleth's move set will actually feel like to play.
I think anyone that didn't expect Byleth has a poor read on Nintendo overall. Yes, both turn-based strategy and the anime art style are both niche. But anyone that actually plays the series can see that 3H was definitely the next big step similar to Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild were.

When I played the old ones (FE3), I was not about the characters, but the classes. That's where Smash gets it wrong. There are so many classes, but all we get is the latest Marth. Keep Mercenary (Ike) and Mage, but add Pegasus Knight, and Heavy Knight. I'm serious about those last two, it would've been sick.
Yeah. I agree with him that Awakening has too many characters, but I don't think we have to cut the roster down to make the roster better. I think Corrin, Chrom, and Lucina should be cut or become costumes. Then their spots can go to 3 other fire emblem characters with axes, bows, and lances.

The one thing you could say he did do wrong would be not devoting enough time to diplomacy and/or monitoring the internal situation in regards to Plegia, but tbh I don't think that much thought was put into Awakening's plot. Annexing Plegia seems like it would be extremely difficult and cause a lot of other problems. Plus the fact that Ylisse isn't an empire or anything and Chrom was trying to get along with the Plegians, and wouldn't have a right to annex them.
The only reason this many FE characters made the cut this time is bc of the "everyone is here" thing, I think they want to change the FE roster up in every game, Roy only came back bc of fan demand in SSB4 DLC for example

@SuperPikachu Jexs Relevance of a character isn't the most important factor but it does still matter, Niether Mario nor zelda have introduced any mayor new characters (that aren't part of a set of characters like the BOTW champions) in the past few years, and those other franchises you named aren't really relevant rn either, I really expect a new pokemon in dlc pack 2 and I do believe fan request matter a lot so I wouldn't be surprised to see geno and the like. They just really wanted to put a first party character in the DLC so players who are only nintendo fans or younger players (well teens bc FE isn't for kids) would get a character they actually knew as well, you should keep things like that in mind.
I believe that without the "everyone is here" marketing ploy there probably would have been only been 5 FE characters in this game, maybe 6 if they would have still done the echo thing with Chrom and Roy. Looking at popularity, ease of build and interrest I image they would have had Marth, Lucina, Ike or Roy (/+Chrom) and Robin or Corrin, and then now Byleth. (Smash fans may not get Lucina but as a character she's way more interresting then Marth and way more beloved) it would have atleast been a lot less, but they just had to find a cool way to hype up Snake's return🤷♂️

GSS was the first I heard, Opera and Classical Opera is literally my singing genre, and Nemesis was a beast. Overall, Blue Lions favourite route that I resonate wholly with. Golden Deer however was a fantastic first route for me and I associate all of the game's lore with GSS, so it feels like I've lost a part of the game, if you understand what I mean.

ImFxrr I’d think the opposite would almost be more suiting. I.e., aerials for Bow, Sword jab, Lance Tilts, Smash Attacks for the Axes. Special moves then change based on which weapon is out, allowing for 16 specials (which isn’t that different from Hero).

Somethingsuperbland I don’t feel like that’s a valid comparison as weight is well..weight. Weight can break something, but Byleth being in the game didn’t really “Break” anything so to speak.
That is fair, although I do disagree. I really don’t think having them end the last pass was all too great but if they were the second in Fighter pass 2 would have been perfect. And by that same logic of weight, why do people still want Waluigi or another Pokémon? They have equal than or greater weight than the FE characters. I know they’re gonna add a Pokémon from Gen 8 somewhere in the fighters pass. I don’t necessarily think they should wait until the next game to add them. I don’t particularly want them but still.
Last thing, I have seen a lot of FE in smash debates but I have yet to meet someone that isn’t satisfied with the number of reps they have. It’s more of what matters more being the gameplay that matters more to fans of the series as most of them use swords and most people would like a rep to another class and Or aspect of FE like a Pegasus rider. I haven’t been an FE fan for the longest time since I started on awakening but Hector uses an Axe and Lyn uses a sword and bow, but Lyn uses a long sword so could in theory could be a very unique character while also acting as a “face” character as they are one of the most popular FE characters in ANY game. It’s not that they want more, it’s that they’d rather have better representation which I feel like is reasonable.
Somethingsuperbland It is proven that some resources from Smash4 were taken into ultimate, absolutely not all but some. Robin’s final smash is probably one of them. And although you are right, even Echoes take work, arguing that they get an amiibo and everything is just kind of semantics because that is the standard of every fighter echo or not. Every character even alternate costumes get different voice lines and spirits, and in the case of Smash4 dlc they even got the P2 Amiibo(R.I.P.). All the Echoes are really just an “Eh, why not?” Kind of choice. And I do agree that they are obviously representation. I think Chrom is more of a sad offender if anything. People wanted him and all yeah, but it IS admittedly stupid that Awakening Alone(despite being one of the most popular its crazy) has THREE.
If I were to make equivalents to those with FE using my knowledge.
Mario is Marth obviously because they are both the face respectively.
Roy is Luigi for similar enough reasons that I don’t know a lot of details of.
Ike I don’t feel like has a direct equivalent but he’s a heavy sword fighter that brings a far different game from the others so Bowser?
Lucina is another one without a direct equivalent but I’d say Chrom and her would be equivalent to plant on a much lesser degree, since they show how iconic Awakening was and it literately SAVED the franchise.
Robin is Rosalina, only appeared once or twice in a main line game but both games left such an impact from their games that they are more than likely to be recognized by people who have never played their specific games.
Corrin and Byleth are tricky and I don’t think they have an equivalent at all. But Fates basically tried and failed to recreate the spark from Awakening and failed for the most part but failed in many people’s eyes so take that for what you will. My point is, you can make similar arguments for literarily any franchise. Honestly I think it’s pretty crazy that any franchise has 8 characters or more, but “Everyone is here” therefore every rep from every franchise “is here” so it makes sense for so many of them for both Mario and FE. It is also in an inevitable spot for its characters to not be as iconic as series like Mario or sonic as the games has changed SO much over the years and almost every game has a new cast of characters.

And that Bayonetta was at one point considered a Spiritual Successor to Devil May Cry in gameplay.

Dante would have been Sword-Bayonetta. Bayonetta's Echo, they share many many similarities in gameplay.

As well as sword changes the moveset SO MUCH (jab, aerials, smashes, tilts, and pummel, hell maybe even the specials are changed because of sword, which they already are going to be different.) So you can't really compare them.

Just comparing the animations of each character in the roster, they seem the closest. Due to Dante being a speedy, damage dealer that doesn't rely on a few moves but "the entire kitchen sink".
And eventually no one besides Bayonetta has stylistic animations that matches Dante's flashy and fast style like in his games.
For instance: both of them would use rapid attacks based on combos from their original games.
They both use guns, slow exaggerated heavy attacks(launchers, air spikes,etc), magic, and transformations.
For regular attacks, whereas Bayonetta uses Melee punches, and adds in magic. Dante would instead use his sword mixed in with Melee attacks.
It wouldn't be exact, and many things will be different. But the weight of the attacks/the animations would be pretty similar.
Just imagine his Marvel vs Capcom version, everything he does in there could be converted into a fast character like Bayonetta(if anyone).

No counter: Dante has Royal Guard and Quicksilver so getting a counter rolled in would be very easy. Not probable for another Witch Time, but it’s not insane.
Losing damage from no variety: that’s called stale moves in Smash. So the gimmick might be more his styles and weapon pool, though they shafted Bayo’s weapon pool so they’d have to do the same for time constraints.
Smash Ultimate also tries to stay pretty true to the character’s origins. Terry, Joker, and even Banjo are prime examples of that. Mechanics being in line with their main games. And when you get into the nuts of DMC, Dante and Bayonetta play very similar. Stinger is Bayo’s grounded heel-slide, easy ground combo game to launcher into the air, then the same air combo game as Bayo, but more vertical than horizontal.
And I can see him being WORSE because his down-B could be Royal Guard that turns into Devil Trigger like Joker’s Arcen. So you’d have a sword character with access to Bayo’s combo game, Marth or Cloud’s disjoints, maybe different styles or weapons like Shulk’s Monado, and Joker’s Arcen meter. Even if Devil Trigger is his final smash, that’s still at least 2 different things Smash players hate.
And if his playstyle doesn’t match the game, Sakurai would get a fucking storm of hate from the community he’s trying to include. So that combo game is almost necessary if they want Dante in.
I think Byleth's moveset is a pretty great representation of Three Houses, actually, because you can equip all those weapons at once and switch between them whenever you want regardless of your class.
I would have preferred all three house leaders, interchangeable like Pokemon Trainer's Squirtle/Ivy/Charizard or old-school Zelda/Sheik. It would have been way better of a rep of 3H than yet another self-insert protag devoid of much personality beyond stern looking and serious.

I think the “FE is about characters” is a point that I’ve never thought of. I think it is a point that needs to be more realized.
Someone else was pointing out that Fire Emblem games usually have around 30-40 playable characters and there's a different roster for all sixteen games. They could have easily found characters within the series that had way different playstyles if they didn't mostly just use the protagonists from the more popular ones. In a way, if you were to judge by percentage of characters, Fire Emblem is actually under represented.
Agree. That's why I love the games. Its focused so much on trying to make these likeable characters. Three Houses did the best job. I fell in love with my students in Blue Lions. And then when they die you actually freak out cause you don't want to lose them. Its rather interesting from a psychological perspective

You don't say! This is my main complain about Fire Emblem characters. I don't care about the number, but they all feel the same: blue haired characters with swords, blue clothes and no personnalities. Hopefully, Corrin and Robbin are little different, but they still do not have personnalities, and they have swords!
I am pretty sure if we had Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude with unique gameplay all at once instead of Byleth, there will be not such downvoting. Mostly because Byleth is a blue haired swordman with blue clothes and no personnality, and the 3 above aren't (even Dimitri). Plus: Byleth popularity is rather average in FE:3H, contrary to the 3 houses leaders. I dream for a new roster like this:
• Edelgard: Axe & Shield. Sturdy and deadly, but slow. Could even have Hector as echo fighter.
• Dimitri: Lance & Sword: quick and versatile, but lightweight. Could even have Lyn as echo fighter.
• Claude: Bow & Wyvern: high mobility and good projectile, but limited option in close range.
• Swordsmen: Make your choice between all those. Even if I like Roy a lot, Lucina and Ike are the best guesses if we are limited to 2.
• Robin and Corrin: because they have unique gameplay.
Well, we end up with 9 FE characters in the end (Edelgard, (Hector), Dimitri, (Lyn), Claude, Lucina, Ike, Robin and Corrin) instead of 8 (Marth, (Lucina), 'Roy', (Chrom), Ike, Robin, Corrin and Byleth).

I would argue that every FE character we have either does serve a purpose or has no reason NOT to be there.
Marth is of course the face of the entire series. His fighting style of keeping his opponents at the right distance and hitting them with the tip of his sword is a genius way to transition the gameplay of a tactical RPG into a fighting game. It represents the strategy of patiently picking off your enemies one by one while minimizing risks by staying out of range of enemy attacks.
On the contrary, Roy when introduced in Melee represented an alternative, more aggressive playstyle. It still represented tactical positioning, but his attacks were stronger at the base of the sword rather than the tip. He seems to represent the idea of simply brute forcing strong opponents in FE by attacking them head-on with your own strong units. That may be a bit of a stretch, but let's not forget that he was a clone in Melee. He doesn't really need any justification for being there. He was brought back in SB4 simply by popular demand. So, even though I would say the aspects he represented before don't really hold up now, it can't be argued that it was Smash fans who wanted him back in the first place. And they did take the extra effort to ensure Roy wasn't just a clone again.
Ike was able to take the ideas conveyed by Roy and apply them in a much more obvious way, using a heavy sword to crush his enemies. At the time of his inclusion, no other swordfighter fought like this and even now the only one who comes close is Ganondorf with his forward smash.
Robin was a perfect opportunity to represent weapon types outside of just swords. Using Robin, they were finally able to include a protagonist that specialized in magic. Granted, in my opinion they did a pretty poor job of this by also choosing to have him represent inventory management and weapon degredation of all things, but it was still a respectable decision to include.
Lucina, as an echo, doesn't need any justification. It's worth noting though that she was originally planned to just be an alt for Marth before it was decided to change her sword to remove the sweetspot mechanic of Marth so that she could serve as an easier to master version of Marth. She also represents one of the unique aspects of Awakening: The time-traveling children from a doomed future.
Corrin was a perfect opportunity to represent another new weapon type: Dragonstones. Granted, I do think a more timeless choice to represent this probably would have been Tiki as she is a recurring character and a very popular one at that, but with Fates right around the corner at the time, I really don't think Corrin was as out of place as everyone makes him out to be. He had a ton of unique moveset potential unlike anything any other FE protagonist could exhibit. You can't blame Sakurai for wanting to include him.
Once again, Chrom being an echo means he needs little justification. However, he was a very highly requested character during development of SB4 (even if only because of the gematsu leak). From what I understand, Sakurai had considered including him in SB4 as an Ike echo as well. Between that and fan demand, Chrom's inclusion kinda just feels like "eh, why not?" And why not indeed, as even among echo fighters Chrom is the most unique pulling from two different movesets rather than exclusively Roy's.
Up until this point, there has always been something major missing from Fire Emblem representation in smash: The weapon triangle. A major mechanic in FE games is the rock-paper-scissors relationship between swords, lances, and axes. I always felt like it was a missed opportunity that Chrom and Lucina weren't given a lance in reference to their Great Lord class being able to use lances, but they were instead included as echoes, and including them as original characters and having their movesets built around a lance rather than their signature swords would feel unnatural.
But that brings us to Byleth who, while from an FE game that quite surprisingly did away with the weapon triangle, is also from a game in which any character of any class can use any weapon type. Many people have argued we should have gotten one of the house leaders, the most popular suggestion seems to be Edelgard. Unfortunately, I just don't think it's really fair to include one house leader over the others. They all hold equal importance to the story of Three Houses. This is the same reason I don't think Sakurai would have chosen any of the champions from Breath of the Wild, either. The only time Sakurai has ever chosen among a trio of characters were starter pokemon. I don't think the intention there was to represent the starters specifically but just to choose a pokemon from the latest generation, the most suited designs chosen by Sakurai just happen to usually be starters.
Regardless, I think Byleth was the best solution to this whole dilemma. The Sword of the Creator is a very unique weapon type. Yes, it is a sword, but I'm shocked by how many people overlook the fact that the "sword" is more like a whip than anything else. That alone I think is pretty freaking awesome. Beyond that, the inclusion of the Hero's Relics of each of the house leaders allows for representation of not only the entire weapon triangle in one character, but also allows each of the house leaders to be represented spiritually through Byleth, the face of the game as a whole. Byleth, being a professor, trains in a variety of weapon types to teach his students properly. For this reason, he is a perfect fit to represent the variety of weapon types Fire Emblem has to offer.
I really think people are far more angry about "too many FE reps!" than they should be. Excluding echoes, the franchise has 6 reps. That's still less than Mario and Pokemon and equal to Legend of Zelda. At the end of the day, Smash isn't about the number of reps each game deserves, it's about representing each game as well as they possibly can. As long as a franchise is contributing new ideas, Smash is going to continue adding new characters.

I love Fire Emblem. It’s my favorite franchise in video games and I’ll never get tired of playing it. That being said, I completely agree with you that the cast in smash should be cut in half. I’d say keep Marth, Ike, Robin, Corrin, and Byleth. With the amount of character there are, I don’t think they deserve an echo spot. Those five are unique enough to be the fire emblem reps of smash imo

I mean "Echo Spot" doesn't really make sense as an argument. The point of an echo is to differentiate their playstyle and add a bit of fanservice using minimal resources. They don't really take up a "slot", they just get added if the creators feel they can or should, and I much prefer Chrom and Lucina who play very differently to Roy and Marth than Samus and Dark Samus or Peach and Daisy, who play identically to each other.
I really badly wanted Azura to be a playable character but they just made her a spirit.

The typical Smash fan is upset an FE character got added. Standard/older FE fans wish someone else was added (i.e. Lyn). Fans of 3H are sad that God Shattering Star isn't here.
Hopefully we'll get a Felix Swordfighter skin or something that it will come with, like Megalovania or Floral Fury with Sans and Cuphead.

Personally I prefer Lucina over Marth and Corrin is one of the most distinct fighters from the series there.
Yes and no, the General 'Everyone is Here' slogan can stil stay intact.. if the Idea of the Echo fighters was they're seprate 'COSTUMES' on the fighter they're Echoing. THe ones with significant differences liek Ken and Ryu work, but Lucina and Marth Don't for the fact theirs VERY little (At glance and Moveset) Different between the two meaning it's literally two Seprate charaters billed to just be 'Clones' with a fancy title. I don't have a problem with Byleth not cause I didn't play FIre Emblem three houses, not cause it's another Sword'esce Fighter in smash, but my issue is that theirs diffently a DOzen other series with more WOrld Renown that Nintendo owns that they could've put into the game and it could've worked instead of dipping into the same series again.

Remember how hype everyone was when they first announced every smash character was coming back for this game? I feel like that energy is gone with the game being out for so long, but I still think this game wouldn't be "ultimate" without that concept of every character being in it. You can split hairs about what characters you would have if it were up to you, but I'd still rather have every character in the game than a selective cast. IDK why people want LESS options. I don't even play FE, but some of the fighters are fun to play, so I'm glad they are all here.

@@suicidalloafofbread2009 No, but there is a very simple way of knowing if a game is objectively good outside of your personal opinion. for example if you ask about god of war 4, red dead redemptiom 1 and 2, zelda breath of the wild, shadow of the colossus, final fantasy 6, 7 and 9, etc ... 90% of people will tell you that these are really good games, the other 10% or they did not play them or they do not belong to genres that they like. if you ask most of the players about fe 25% will tell you that they are ok 25% will tell you that they are horrible, 40% have never played it or are not interested and 10% are fanboys who talk about how wonderful they are there is how much you can give a final verdict ... an example would be half life 2 to me it seems like fucking shit but 90% will tell you that it is a masterpiece and if you analyze it you can see why people believe it indifferently of what I think. I have played almost every fe and I have talked about them with many people and honestly it is hardly a regular franchise ... that sells well just like assassins creed
When Byleth was added i only thought of the scene in Endgame where Thanos said "I am inevitable." I wasn't upset at Byleth's inclusion, but I wasn't very impressed either. I felt like if they were gonna do another FE rep, it should have been someone with more of an ability to expand what the smash community has to see in FE, not another anime sword fighter. I am happy at Byleth's inclusion, but I realized the backlash that would occur in the community as a Smash fan and a Fire Emblem fan would be rather immense. I will say that I am looking forward to how Byleth's move set will actually feel like to play.

Yes, both turn-based strategy and the anime art style are both niche. But anyone that actually plays the series can see that 3H was definitely the next big step similar to Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild were.

When I played the old ones (FE3), I was not about the characters, but the classes. That's where Smash gets it wrong. There are so many classes, but all we get is the latest Marth. Keep Mercenary (Ike) and Mage, but add Pegasus Knight, and Heavy Knight. I'm serious about those last two, it would've been sick.

The one thing you could say he did do wrong would be not devoting enough time to diplomacy and/or monitoring the internal situation in regards to Plegia, but tbh I don't think that much thought was put into Awakening's plot. Annexing Plegia seems like it would be extremely difficult and cause a lot of other problems. Plus the fact that Ylisse isn't an empire or anything and Chrom was trying to get along with the Plegians, and wouldn't have a right to annex them.
The only reason this many FE characters made the cut this time is bc of the "everyone is here" thing, I think they want to change the FE roster up in every game, Roy only came back bc of fan demand in SSB4 DLC for example

I fully agree that I would have rather seen someone without a sword as a FE rep this time, so a full on mage or dragon or something, but calling Byleth "pandering to sword users" is REALLY farfetched, this guy uses his sword less then joker uses his dagger and no one calls joker a swordfighter (factually speaking daggers are a sub-category of swords)
@SuperPikachu Jexs Relevance of a character isn't the most important factor but it does still matter, Niether Mario nor zelda have introduced any mayor new characters (that aren't part of a set of characters like the BOTW champions) in the past few years, and those other franchises you named aren't really relevant rn either, I really expect a new pokemon in dlc pack 2 and I do believe fan request matter a lot so I wouldn't be surprised to see geno and the like. They just really wanted to put a first party character in the DLC so players who are only nintendo fans or younger players (well teens bc FE isn't for kids) would get a character they actually knew as well, you should keep things like that in mind.
