After listening to his podcasts for so many years, it's nice to finally have a face to go with the voice. And my copy of his Lafayette book arrived yesterday, looking forward to reading his words too.
Also, I grew up on a Lafayette Street in Maine, in a town Lafayette personally visited in the 1780s.

I stumbled into History of Rome during paternity leave earlier this year and I binged the entire series twice while staying up late with my newborn daughter. I wish I had found it years ago as a Roman history fanatic. And, now I'm about half-way through Revolutions (despite it coming to a conclusion soon). I highly recommend any content that Mike records/publishes because he has an amazing way to make some (let's be honest) dry content very entertaining.

I've listened Mike's both broadcasts (Rome and revolutions) at a binge level for half a year. Amazing guy.

2:05 "Forrest Gump in the Age of Revolutions" I never thought of describing Lafayette that way and yet it feels so right

I look forward to reading it. I highly recommend the informative and greatly entertaining Lafayette in the Somewhat United States by Sara Vowell as an introduction. What an astonishing life he lead! She does a superb job dissecting the machinations of the time. It looks obvious to me that, without the money and support of the French, the ragtag bunch of farmers would not have become the United States. We should be more appreciative of the French!

My GGG Grandfather made that trip across with Layfayette in 1777 and fought under General Washington. He was from Bastogne Belgium which was part of France at that time. We took the name Baisden after the town Bastogne.

Two-thirds of the fatalities at Yorktown were French soldiers

As a Frenchman I am proud and respectful for Lafayette altruism, boldness and consistency to achieve his dream. I am nevertheless disappointed to realize his example has not been followed. In particular, most wealthy people (even the smartest ones) have today no other goal than accumulating money for themselves and the next generations.
