In case it wasn’t clear, this is not my personal list. It’s a joint effort, and I personally haven’t read about half of the characters included here. In other words, it's a subjective, orientative, innacurate... and shared list (and truth first and foremost, some characters have been victims of glazing here). Likewise, if anyone has constructive criticism to offer, we encourage you to share it. Many characters have not been judged properly due to a lack of opinions, and, as you know, this is not meant to be an objective list; it serves more as a guideline. PS: PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMER
whats the point of making a guideline thats just inaccurate? shit like manaka at 95 and merc in not even top 70 while naoya and taichi are in the top 30? those are just the ones i know, naoya and especially taichi being above all the classic literature guys (havent read the classic literature ones but still) sounds pretty insane to me
@@ruinicibz4511 The purpose of the list is specified in the disclaimer, I would appreciate if you read it. And if you have any constructive criticism with the top we encourage you to share it. In addition, precisely, the person who has put Naoya and Taichi so high up has read 10 times more than me (or even more), including classical literature. So in my opinion, I think his criteria is valid enough. Finally, I never said that it is a guideline, but that it serves as one. The list is obviously inaccurate because of everything mentioned in the disclaimer, so I would really appreciate if you could read it.
@@noncarpediem didnt read the disclaimer before, still think its kinda unnecessary since its just gonna be misleading to a lot of people, maybe stop ranking them and just list them instead
@@ruinicibz4511 I don't think it is misleading as long as people read the disclaimer, which is why it is there, to inform about the inaccuracy of this list. And if someone has not read the disclaimer and is therefore “misled”, I don't think it is our responsibility. Because in the first place, we have never sold it as the opposite. And if someone decides to believe the list or not, that's their own personal affair. And as you say, we considered making a list instead of a top. But finally we decided that a top would go better to be able to differentiate the characters And as we know the problems involved in making a top, we decided to write a disclaimer to explain and detail the inexactitude of the system used. But, if you have any idea of a rating system that allows us to differentiate the characters without using a top, I encourage you again to share it.
@@ruinicibz4511 I rate Taichi and Naoya considerably higher than the other visual novel characters (perhaps Kageaki would be a little closer), but it's worth remembering that it's not because the characters have a gap in the list that that gap also exists in an individual comparison. for me even Mamiya is comparable to the characters from classic literature, there's a media overvaluation of the characters from classic literature that makes the takes against anime/manga/LN/VN characters unfair, but that doesn't make sense when both media explore similar philosophical and cultural themes (of course it depends on the execution, but both also do it perfectly)
Jacopo, Zarathustra, Harrier Du Bois. Three of the most well written as well as underrated characters I've ever read, and all three mentioned. Ultimate list!
I saw that you put some characters from Latin American books. I really appreciate that since it's the first time I've seen literary characters in videos in English. I hope you put more. Hugs from Peru.
Even though my fav characters are lower ranked than the rest, it just convinced me more that this list is a massive W. Great list! It means there is still more literatures i needed to consume
When i found the debate edit community of writing, i had a little fermi paradox on me- if such beautiful art is discussed in such a niche group, what about the rest of the world? Glad i found this video
This is such a nice video. The look of the video and the music really give it a somber atmosphere with a lot of gravitas. I’ve heard of a lot of these works before, but this makes me want to actually check them out
This list is simply amazing. There are so many characters unknown to me that need to be mastered... But turning to the question: where is the best place to start getting acquainted with literature? I think that classical children's literature would be a better starting point, because of the focus on certain topics, the absence of many and complex interpretations, and finally the simplicity of the entire genre (I'm only talking about the vast majority of children's literature). It is important for me to know the opinion of knowledgeable people, because I am far from knowledgeable in this area of media.
@@jessepinkman111 I believe that literature is something very personal and the best thing you can do is to read what really interests you. Obviously, books of a very high difficulty, such as James Joyce's Ulysses, are not recommended to begin with. However, it's okay if as a starting point you take a novel of intermediate difficulty, because the important thing is that you have the desire to read it, understand it and enjoy it. Likewise, as a guideline I leave you a list of recommendations of "classic" books that can be a good starting point to get into this hobby; - The Stranger, Camus - Siddhartha, Hesse - The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger - Tokyo Blues, Murakami - 1984, Orwell - Frankenstein, Shelley But this is only in case you want to get started in the classics, because if you intend to get into literature in general you have other alternatives. For example in my case I started as a child with fantasy and eventually I became interested in the universal classics. So in conclusion, read what interests you the most without thinking too much about it :)
@@noncarpediem Oh, thanks for the advice. Really good reasoning, because I'm too worried about failing at something I don't fully understand. You showed me that even with a little experience, you can freely interpret the events described, find your own meaning in all this and freely go into analysis. There is only one question left about the top in the video... Why is Grigory Pechorin so high? Is he really that good? In my opinion, Oblomov would be much better in all respects of this meaning. Oblomov is wildly underrated in Russian literature, having a false opinion about the "boring" of this novel
@@jessepinkman111 Sorry for the late response, TH-cam didn’t notify me of your comment. As for Oblomov, as far as I know no one on the team has read it. I would put Noncarpediem at number 1 and here is my explaination: Introduction - His introduction puts many layers and themes, depths and complexity in his first short and it foreshadows his first video which is both their top fictional character and would most likely changed. Conclusion - Just because a character has not ended does not mean he is bad look at fang yuan. Themes - Noncarpediem themes are insanely complex and puts many meanings and all of his videos fit into his themes and here are the examples: Debate, Comparison, Thrilling, Entertainment, Adventure, Education and many more and he has 100+ themes like the dude who sold his soul to the devil idk guy. Depths - His depths are amazing and very complex and it shows all the context with making it long and the depths just works yk yk. Complexity - Noncarpediem cannot be understand because of his 1000000+ layers and if i were to explain it my mind would be gone like dr1bble's channel. Pararells - Noncarpediem's pararells shapes his youtube platform channel and his friends around him. Speeches(Dialogues and Monologues) - His dialogues are like Harry Dubois and his monologues are like John Galt. Characs - Love, Mercy, Calm, Chill, Sigma, and Selling Hotdogs. Conflicts and overall conflicts - His debate againts the ignautius victims and himself holding back to turn everyone into a ignautius victims is insane. Shoutout to Wonderlline vs Noncarpediem peak fiction fight. Symbolism - He symbolizes what a writing debater is and that is being respectful on everyone and the people's takes. Ideology/ Beliefs / Philosophy - Read FAS, FAUST, Usogui.

Wait hold on. Michael Corleone is here at 86, I've read the Godfather in its entirety recently enough so I can remember the key parts about it but I wanna share my thoughts about him. He's definitely a good character, but I feel like he's not THAT great. Main idea is the one who wants to be a mafia boss the least, is the best suited for the position. And that's him. He also has a relationship with Kay and has to reveal to her what kind of man he is, because being a mafia leader means being a criminal, a murderer even. Just wanted to write this out, if there's anything major to Michael that I forgot, I'd like someone to remind me. Because after all, the idea of this video is the top 100 best characters in ALL OF FICTION. A lot of my favourite characters, who I cuddle in my eyes as they are quite in the sunrise, didn't make the list. Still, a good idea. Next time, add me too if there's some collaboration going on. If you make the next list. Do add Gabriel Oak and Jay Gatsby. I will give you my analysis if you ask me. I think Gabriel Oak is one of the most authentic and yet romanticised versions of a critical romantic character of 18th Century England. Hardy did a wonderful job to flourish his character and cement the emotional resonance (emotions) with her desire, Batsheva, in a very profound, approachable, and realistic manner with respect to Dorset, England, in the 18th century. If you have read Fata Morgana, Gabriel does his job in a more realistic, predominantly with a better psychological and less dramatic manner. And as for Jay, I just see him quite high, and I do know you are quite indifferent to it. But just let me know if you want those analyses of mine. I haven't made it yet, but I am free of work for some days. W edit and collaboration.

writing is definitely subjective to a large extent, especially when it comes to personal taste. But I’d argue there are still elements of a story or character that can be assessed more objectively. (etc. Introduction, Conclusion, Complexity, Consistency, Backstory, Goals, Development, peaks, narrative)
@@shayow7159 I'd say how consistent char is as subjective as which char is better. How well goals are defined - no way to proof, how complex is char - no way to proof etc. I don't see anything objective in writing, no matter what anything will be based on opinion - whether it's your own or majority opinion. There is no way to objectively proof, f.e. how Marcel Proust is better character than Gojo Satoru, any statement will be based on beliefs and so on. The line between good and bad is blurrеd аsf (and there are many examples of char being thought as well written or bad written just because of majority opinion). There is also thing like "fоrсеd hаte" which is just hаting on char and refusing to even analyze it (Tanjiro, Deku, Denji, Guts but rarely). @@shayow7159 1. Fоrсеd hate still affects opinions of everyone cause people are biаsеd. 2. Nobody on planet earth could proof Guts is better anyway, that's just your pov. With all due respect, this may be one of the most misguided perspectives on fiction and the art of writing ever presented. Characters within their respective narratives serve different roles and are crafted with varying approaches. For example, just because a character is designed for psychological exploration within a story does not make them inherently better written than another character who lacks such aspect. The latter may simply not have been intended for that purpose. Furthermore, including psychological in a character does not automatically reflect superior writing ability. It is the alignment of the character's design with the narrative's needs that truly matters. Ranking characters by asserting that Writer X did a better job than Writer Y based on such a simplistic and misguided perspective is genuinely insulting. It reduces the complexity of writing to a narrow and flawed metric, disregarding the diverse intentions behind different character designs.
@@ChrisTtfw To be honest, I agree with the overall message (even if I think some things are somewhat exaggerated). I don't justify making the top 100, but I just want to make it clear that even knowing everything you say we decided to make the top. We have some reasons for it, but I don't think I owe you any explanation and, to be honest, I'm not even sure that the reasons are completely valid. However, even if they were, it wouldn't change the fact that you are right. So in my opinion there is no point in discussing it. For the moment, I stand firm with the top. But I respect, admire and to some extent share your opinion. Anyway, the truth is that I prefer that there are people who take the list as you do rather than people who take it as if it were a “divine” top where the order has even relevance. Thank you very much for the reflection and have a nice day.
@@ChrisTtfw By the way, if you don't mind, I would like to pin your message. Mainly because I think there are people who have not thought about this and in my opinion it is always good to be able to take into account another point of view.

very diverse and stacked list W, i'd recommend Zaregoto, Kiichi!! ( +VS) , Usogui , Rezero LN, and The World Is Mine if you haven't , their mc's are better than a lot of these characters imo. Surprised araragi is so low, nishio ishin is a very talented novelist and araragi ( especially novels ) is amazing. Even so I think the zaregoto's mc ( another Nishio's work ) will be pretty high since araragi already made top 90. Also you should give bleach a try just for Aizen, he's an extremely well written and interesting character and Kubo actually took inspiration from a lot of works on this list such as thus spoke zarathustra
@@arii_how I said a lot meaning they would make the list at least, obvsly since yall can value different things they can also not be there . I think classical literature is cool and everything but the modern one , especially Japanese literature , is a style I value more since it’s more relatable . Tho I haven’t read everything from this list
I haven't read ReZero, so I don't know if he would be in the list... As far as I know, he is usually rated very high so I see it possible that he could be in the top 100-80, on par with the likes of Araragi. What do you think?

Thank you all for this amazing list, I'll probably check out some of the characters in there soon. It's great when people in this community actually do something to make others discover new media instead of comparing characters to prove one is better than the other
@noncarpediem Ahh yeah, I missed him at 29. Also, Jacopo > Beatrice any day for me. A lot of the choice made no sense and seemed to just be random. Like, why put Crois at 97? He's far from the best Trails character.
@noncarpediem At that point I'd say you should title the list 100 of the best characters ever written instead of making it a ranking. No offence but this is quite meaningless.
@ I know the list is meaningless, but it's not made not to be, we just wanted to make a top, even if it wasn't serious. If someone takes it seriously is their problem since everything is explained in the disclaimer, but even so I think the list is very good considering the circumstances in which we have done it. I myself disagree with quite a few positions, but I think that if we divide the list in 3 groups of 33 it is a convincing result. Anyway, I don't know why you are surprised that the list is not "meaningful" when not even the writing comparisons are serious... It's something we enjoy and that's all. But yes, I agree with everything you say.
Nooo. I strongly believe that paul should be way higher than just 63. Man come on dune is literally way more complex than anything doestevsky wrote. But anyway great list.
@@noncarpediem that's understandable but if we are talking complexity I would not agree. I believe dune is more politically and philosophically intriguing . Anyways that was a fire video. keep sharing good characters like that.

How about the antagonist of a movie or TV series My top would probably include The Governor from The Walking Dead and The Joker from The Dark Knight And it is also interesting to find out who you think is the best deuteragonist/tritagonist in movies and TV series
The Joker is not better written than Reinhard thus not being able to make it to top 100 and The Governor aswell They are amazing characters but unfortunately they are not better written than the characters mentioned in this list
@@TheMystic0 Well, I haven't watched or read much, I understand that Governor Joker and Walter White are inferior to the likes of Jimmy McGill, Elliot Alderson, and Sand Dan Glokta (the only characters I've fully gotten to know in this top) so I'll take my word for it, but for me, they're the only characters that I would rate it at 99/100(There is no absolute ideal )
@@Danylo3006_ what about the govenor in the comic version, joker is not really that well written in the comic, i prefer Bane than joker if we talking about the comic
I just wanna say, you're definitely cultured in the best sense by having read so many works and understood such complex characters fully. I know it'll sound a bit strange, but have you ever thought of writing a book yourself?
@@Salalazai Thank you so much for your comment :) But I have to admit that I haven’t read most of the novels that appear in the video and that’s because this is a shared project. Regarding the novel, yes, I have thought about it but not as something serious tbh
Interesting list to be honest There are loads of placements I disagree with such as Knecht being near the t10 or Ahab being even in the top 50, but the variety is admirable
Thank you very much for your comment. We are aware of the inaccuracy of the list and therefore we appreciate that there are still people who appreciate the list more for the content than for the order. If you have any improvements you think you can make to the list, we will be happy to receive them and we will take them into account if we ever make a part 2
W list however if we’re ordering them by quality I think Harry Huller deserves to be In the top 5 and possibly higher however I could be wrong since I have not read Doctor Faustus. In that case Harry should be number 6. I also think Elliot Alderson deserves to be higher than Bojack. Now I have not read a lot of the book characters above him however I do believe he is a better character than Bojack and yes I am aware that this is a joint opinion however I still think its worth sharing my opinion

Likewise, as a guideline I leave you a list of recommendations of "classic" books that can be a good starting point to get into this hobby;
- The Stranger, Camus
- Siddhartha, Hesse
- The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger
- Tokyo Blues, Murakami
- 1984, Orwell
- Frankenstein, Shelley
But this is only in case you want to get started in the classics, because if you intend to get into literature in general you have other alternatives.

Insane Work and for Future Top 1000 Best Fictional Characters??;)
I would put Noncarpediem at number 1 and here is my explaination:
Introduction - His introduction puts many layers and themes, depths and complexity in his first short and it foreshadows his first video which is both their top fictional character and would most likely changed.

Just wanted to write this out, if there's anything major to Michael that I forgot, I'd like someone to remind me. Because after all, the idea of this video is the top 100 best characters in ALL OF FICTION. It's definitely something in which a lot of thought should be put (not saying there wasn't much thought behind the ranking, I thank everyone who made the video, but it is hard to not make some oversights in a few instances)

Can't wait to see the list🗣
@@MR_NOBODY61 Of course!
If you want to add a character you can discuss it with @n3ew777, who is the owner of the project. From what you say, Gabriel Oak sounds like an excellent character.
On the other hand, I'm interested to know what it is about Gatsby that fascinates you so much. Because as you well know, I was a bit indifferent to the reading, and I would like to be able to take into account another point of view.
Thank you very much for your appreciation and support :)
@@noncarpediem Nice. So where can I find that guy? Does he have a dc account? And yes, Gabriel Oak is definitely a fantastic character, as is Batsheva Everdene, the very female protagonist of Far From The Madding Crowd.
I would be glad to showcase the reasoning behind me having Gatsby in a high position. It might help you too to reconcile the feelings towards him. Is it okay if I share a bit of my analysis tomorrow evening (timezone haha)? I will keep it very simple and confined without stretching anything; I will try to deliver it without being biased. Basically, I will answer why his writing's impact and the most dominant aspect of his anti-hero and tragic downfall tendency with the grand similarities with characters like Samsa, Jacopo, Hamlet, and even somehow Rodion. So be ready for it tomorrow. And don't forget to criticise if something about him feels inconsistent or my aiding towards him. That would help us to analyse and give credits to him properly. I am glad you are again showing that you're open-minded.
Also, I have started reading Steppenwolf; I just got the book today. I have very high expectations from him and Hesse (only you hyped me up, haha). Have you read Demian, and if so, how do you compare him to other characters of Hesse? I am sorry if I am chattering too much. I will share this video in my community post. Great job! Love literature always.
@@MR_NOBODY61 As you can understand, I prefer not to give you his Discord without his consent. So if you want to ask him yourself, you can find a comment from him as a reply to my comment where I explain that it is a 500 subs special and everything else.
About the "analysis" of Gatsby, if you don't mind I would like you to pass it to me by dscord because it is more convenient for me.
And finally, I am very happy to know that you have started Steppenwolf thanks to me. I honestly usually recommend reading Demian and Siddhartha first, but well, I don't think it's a very serious problem. And as for Demian, since it was among my first classics I'm not able to remember it as much as I'd like to, so I can only intuitively tell you that I scale Emil Sinclair a bit above Paul and Siddhartha.
I hope you enjoy it very much :)

But that's not an objective ranking not because of reasons mentioned in the disclaimer, but because writing is 101% subjective no matter what you do 🥶
And who tf are those nggаs in t5, Marcel Proust inflation is real 😭
And who саrеs, you put Stav over Myshkin holy W 🗣🗣🗣
writing is definitely subjective to a large extent, especially when it comes to personal taste. But I’d argue there are still elements of a story or character that can be assessed more objectively. Things like how consistent a character is, how well their goals are defined, or how effectively their arc resolves within the narrative.
All in all, humans are too biаsеd to judge 😭
Maybe it's just me, since 99% of chаrs i love get absolutely hаtеd by majority, but i don't see a way to actually proof superiority of one chаr over another.
As a typical reader of fiction, I sometimes spend time on TikTok for boktub, so i think you mostly refer to those comparisons shorts if so I totally relate to you
**There is also thing like "fоrсеd hаte" which is just hаting on char and refusing to even analyze it**
they confuse enjoyment with writing, those self proclaimed elitists some call themselves like this, not necessarily interracially, meaning inherently they are superior to others in opinions. And those who just comment without analysis or most likely never even touching the piece of work, shouldn’t be taken seriously if there is a know internet term as troll, they hate just to hate **the line between good and bad is blurrеd аsf, and there are many examples of char being thought as well written or bad written just because of majority opinion,**
A debate, analysis its a mix between both subjectivity and objectivity, you saying “i don't see a way to actually proof superiority of one chаr over another.”
so what do you think, who is better written
peppa pig, hello kitty or guts, i hope we are on the same page, so i know that there’s more to it, I don’t want to get into deph or anything, I’ll just summarise it as much as possible, if Character A consistently makes choices that align with their established traits and goals, while Character B constantly contradicts themselves without reason, Character A might be objectively stronger in that category. *All in all, humans are too biаsеd to judge 😭* this is unnecessary but anyway, humans are but there are tools that are not for example AI, welp at least they are more objective than subjective,i am going to theorise that you can literally ask a task to chatGPT to do in-depth analysis, so in the end the media that comes up with this stuff is by larger extent biased than based so yeah i am going to stay to my opinion and you can agree to disagree i think however objectivity exists but in its own scaling.
@@shayow7159 1. Fоrсеd hate still affects opinions of everyone cause people are biаsеd.
2. Nobody on planet earth could proof Guts is better anyway, that's just your pov. Consistency is blurred term, while being better written is even more blurrеd, so still char A can't be proven better than char B, and guts can't be proven better than hello kitty (who tf is hello kitty anyway ⁉️😭).
3. Ai is based on human information and created by humans.
4. Percentage can be higher

Did ONE of you read the fucking Disclaimer???
@@ChrisTtfw To be honest, I agree with the overall message (even if I think some things are somewhat exaggerated).
