I have to be honest, the MacBook built in mic sounds much better in my opinion. Then I went back and listened to the C1, and it sounds leagues better than both.
Considering this is a sponsored video I'm surprised they let him showcase the obviously much better Macbook Pro camera. Also, both iOS and macOS now have different microphone modes (standard, noice cancellation and wide spectrum), so I imagine with the noise cancellation one the Macbook can sound just as good, or even better. Also showcasing autofocus on the Opal but not on the Macbook is a bit weird, if it's great wouldn't you want to compare it to the built-in camera?

This is a solution to a problem that doesn't exit at least for modern laptops. The audio especially was bad on the Opal, sounded like you were in a tincan, sure the background noise was gone but are we really sitting in meetings in a busy coffee shop or restaurant?
A top of the line microphone (with a mute button) is also $180. 🤷♂ And who closes their laptop during a video call? That's a completely made up problem.
Camera looked really good until he got up and it got choppy. Mic wise, yea the newer higher end laptops do have better sound than most external webcams
Yah no way I’m putting that on my laptop Aluminium might be is softer but it’s also heavy and will increase the force being extracted on to the display Leaving it prone to damage
Oh boy, I can't wait to use my new $175 webcam with a mic that sounds like garbage that is going to be downressed to 720p and compressed to all hell for Zoom anyway. What a great investment!
The Opal audio makes it sound like you’re underwater recording with a Gopro & the image doesn’t look as flattering as the MacBook camera as well. The design of the product itself looks cool though lol
I have an M2 Air and the default camera definitely looks better than tadpole. The mic by itself sounds better too, sure tadpole is great for isolation but the voice sounds airy and distorts in/out even when sitting in front of it due to its directional feature. 9/10 times I’m working from my home desk when working remote so isolation doesn’t matter; I don’t do work in a crowded coffee shop or something.
It took Opal two weeks to ship and seven days to respond to a customer service email. Combining that with the fact that the video quality is worse than my MacBook and iPad cams means it’s being returned. Not to mention continuity camera looks 1,000x better. Really, anyone associating themselves with this camera should be embarrassed. Such a shame.
Far too expensive for 1080p 30fps these days. Nowhere near good enough quality. Don't care about the clip it's not a problem that needs to be solved. It's also really not that small.
Good video as always. Love Opal’s design language but that microphone is not great for $175! The 4K sensor is cool but it doesn’t look worlds better than the MacBook sensor. Swing and a miss from Opal but it’s a first gen attempt at this price point so we’ll see how they improve in the future.
That camera is outrageously horrible. The MacBook camera is an RX100 compared to the tadpole which is like my Nokia from high school. It is a complete rip off. Great design and aesthetic but as a camera - LOL. Better to use the MacBook cam or your iPhone. I’d rather have the iPhone camera quality and by the way, nobody worries like mad if the iPhone falls over, you’d probably end up trying to fix a position with both hands. It’s not like you’re constantly adjusting your display.
Looked and sounded worse than the built in. Maybe you like the garbled sound of cheap and nasty noise reduction 🤷. And if you’re in a cafe on a zoom, you would have AirPods in for mic and noise cancelling.
great video, but this is the most useless overpriced piece of tech - who is this product for? nobody lmao this webcam is designed for laptops... most laptops have a built in webcam... and the comparison showed that the built in camera is equal if not better... so what is the point ? I feel bad for this company... releasing something like this in 2024 at 1080p and expecting to do well at that price point is insanity lol
I don't know about the sound, but the video of the macbook camera is definitely better than the Opal one.

Except that Macs have Voice Isolation built in now - you just have to turn it on. The Mic (or the compression) on the new Opal is terrible

Camera zooms in crazy. No adjustment. Filters are not good. I returned mine.
