  • Sailing on Galveston Bay, Texas in our home-built sailboat while my son naps on the cabin top. The cabin is designed with a 7 degree slope and that seems to be same angle that we like to sail the boat. When we do the cabin top is perfectly flat and a great place to nap. The designer is Jim Michalak and this design is called Hapscut.

I have a poly-tarp snap on cover that covers the whole cabin slot and fits around the mast. The mast area has a boot sewn on that I can then wrap around the mast to create a weatherproof boot. If it's raining hard I have to put the halyard on the deck to keep the water from wicking down the halyard and into the boat. Without the mast up, there is a velco flap that covers the mast slot. I have a shorter version that just keeps the spray out you can see in another video.

Thanks for the reply, i think you built one of the nicest looking Michalac designs. looks very practical and a good sailer.

We have hit 9.8mph, per GPS on a reach with #3 reef, but I know we have sailed her faster in winds greater than 20mph. I am not disappointed about her upwind speed but she needs full sail to make good upwind progress. She does feel tippy until you learn how she moves under your feet. We have rolled her up on her side enough to dump some water in the cockpit. Each time the boat still felt like she had plenty of stability left and would not capsize. I plan a capsize test this spring.

nice video and great looking boat, can the hapscut cabin be closed when it rains if the mast is in the way?

What kind of speed are you getting, both upwind and down? Also, does it feel secure in big winds, as in, doesn't feel prone to capsize? I am ready to build it.
